High-Speed Market Studies - NASA press release

https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/armd/aavp/ht/high-speed-studies/

Owing to NASA's Quesst mission and Commercial Supersonic Technology project, there is growing industry interest in commercial aircraft that fly faster than the speed of sound. In 2020, NASA funded two independent studies to investigate the economic viability of this potential market for high-speed commercial flight. Since then, NASA has funded additional studies to investigate the technology developments needed for these aircraft, as well as the regulatory and certification barriers that currently exist for aircraft that break the sound barrier.

Although the initial studies found an economically feasible market may exist for aircraft that fly between 2-4 times the speed of sound, additional studies have shown the most profitable market is at the lower end of this speed range. In addition, current restrictions on overland sonic booms, landing and takeoff noise, and engine emissions currently prohibit the operation of high-speed commercial aircraft. NASA's Commercial Supersonic Technology and Hypersonic Technology projects are working to overcome the technological and regulatory barriers by partnering with industry and other government agencies. In addition, NASA hosts industry workshops to discuss high-speed commercial flight and to understand this evolving industry.

Presentations and reports from the market studies are available on the NASA Technical Reports Server:

While "old but gold" is a moniker that could very appropriately describe the B-52 Superfortress, the venerable bomber is not without its issues. Instead of retiring the B-52s, the US Air Force plans to keep the old birds flying for many more years. To keep them flying, they are to be re-engined and upgraded. However, according to a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, the program will be delayed by another three years.

Machine Learning Application Approval - MLEAP | EASA

https://www.easa.europa.eu/en/research-projects/machine-learning-application-approval

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHbUl4H-toU

The project deals with the approval of machine learning (ML) technology for systems intended for use in safety-related applications in all domains covered by the EASA Basic Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2018/1139).

Data-driven learning techniques are a major opportunity for the aviation industry but come also with a significant number of challenges with respect to the trustworthiness of ML and deep learning (DL) solutions.

EASA published its Artificial Intelligence Roadmap in February 2020, followed by a first major deliverable, a Concept Paper 'First usable guidance for level 1 machine learning applications' in December 2021. This concept paper lays down the basis of EASA future guidance for ML applications approval thanks to a W-shaped process and identifies a number of areas in which further research is necessary to identify efficient and practicable means of compliance with the defined 'AI trustworthiness' objectives.

MLEAP project is a research project initiated by EASA and funded under the Horizon Europe framework. MLEAP has been tailored to investigate the challenging objectives of the W-shaped process at the core of EASA AI Concept Paper.
