Bell 360 Invictus awaiting engine for scheduled 2023 first flight

The Bell 360 Invictus demonstrator, Bell Helicopters' entry for the US Army's Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) contest, is 95% complete, according to Keith Flail, Bell's director of future vertical lift.

The helicopter is scheduled to begin ground testing in March–May 2023, with first flight scheduled for later in the same year – pending delivery of its General Electric (GE) T901 engine from the US Department of Defense (DoD).

(GA-ASI) flew a new survivable Air-Launched Effect (ALE) for the first time as part of a flight demonstration based out of the Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah, on Dec. 8, 2022. The ALE, known as Eaglet, was launched from a U.S. Army MQ-1C Gray Eagle Extended Range (GE-ER) Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS).

SAN DIEGO – 02 February 2023 – On Dec. 22, 2022, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and the Air National Guard (ANG), with joint support from the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and U.S. Air Force (USAF), flight tested an MQ-9A remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) equipped with a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications (SATCOM) Command and Control system. This groundbreaking capability provides global coverage and connectivity that will enable pole-to-pole operations for GA-ASI's family of RPA – including models such as the MQ-9B SkyGuardian®/SeaGuardian®, MQ-9A Reaper, and Gray Eagle 25M.

"This is truly game-changing for our platforms," said GA-ASI President David R. Alexander. "Using LEO SATCOM not only keeps GA-ASI aircraft connected from the North Pole to the South Pole to allow operations in the most austere environments, but it will also provide resilient connectivity that allows operators to pass much more data to and from the aircraft."

Early testing indicates LEO SATCOM significantly reduces latency and can be used in all phases of flight. For customers across the MQ-9 family of systems, LEO SATCOM should decrease operational costs, and the smaller hardware footprint will ultimately increase flexibility and reduce future payload integration costs.

The MQ-9A flight test was based out of GA-ASI's Gray Butte Flight Operations Facility near Palmdale, Calif., and followed several weeks of ground testing.

GA-ASI Selected to Build OBSS for AFRL

SAN DIEGO – 02 February 2023 – General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) will manufacture and perform demonstration flights of the Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) unmanned Off-Board Sensing Station (OBSS) aircraft. Following a 12-month base period that culminated in a critical design review (CDR), AFRL exercised a build and flight test option.

GA-ASI's innovative Gambit Series aircraft will validate the "genus/species" concept first developed by AFRL as part of the Low-Cost Attritable Aircraft Platform Sharing (LCAAPS) program focused on building several aircraft variants from a common core chassis. LCAAPS is a major air vehicle effort under AFRL's Autonomous Collaborative Enabling Technologies (ACET) portfolio, which is focused on developing technologies for Autonomous Collaborative Platforms (ACP).

"Throughout our 30-year history, GA-ASI has pioneered the advancement of unmanned aircraft systems that support our warfighters," said GA-ASI President David R. Alexander. "AFRL is moving forward with GA-ASI because we have the right background and experience to develop the OBSS aircraft at scale and on time, and we look forward to working with them to deliver another game-changing UAS."

La NASA lanza páginas web en español sobre aeronáutica

Como parte de su empeño por proporcionar más recursos e información a nuevos públicos, la NASA ha lanzado nuevas páginas web con información sobre aeronáutica en español. El objetivo de estas páginas es hacer más accesible el contenido aeronáutico a la comunidad hispanohablante.



"Se trata de un significativo paso adelante en nuestros esfuerzos por poner los conocimientos que hemos acumulado en la NASA a disposición de la gente de todo el país, y del mundo. Nos estamos asegurando de que a medida que exploramos y abordamos los mayores retos a los que se enfrenta la aviación, estamos proporcionando beneficios para todos", dijo Bob Pearce, administrador asociado de la Dirección de Misiones de Investigación Aeronáutica de la NASA. "Al presentar información sobre aeronáutica y materiales educativos en español, estamos esforzándonos por fomentar una próxima generación de exploradores diversa, audaz y capaz. Contamos con esta generación para ayudar a la NASA a llevar su visión hacia el futuro."



Según datos de la Oficina del Censo de Estados Unidos, el español es la segunda lengua más hablada en este país, después del inglés. La traducción de los contenidos aeronáuticos de la NASA ayudará a inspirar a la próxima generación de exploradores de la NASA.



Las páginas web ofrecen material educativo sobre el trabajo que realiza la Dirección de Misiones de Investigación Aeronáutica de la NASA. Contienen información sobre las principales prioridades de la agencia, incluida la aviación sostenible. La NASA se ha comprometido a conseguir que las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero del sector de la aviación sean nulas en 2050 y se esfuerza por alcanzar ese objetivo liderando campos que van desde las tecnologías ecológicas y el diseño de aeronaves hasta la fabricación de materiales compuestos y las pruebas de combustibles sostenibles. Las nuevas páginas ayudarán a la agencia a dar a conocer esta labor a nuevos miembros del público.



Además, las páginas web cubrirán los avances tecnológicos desarrollados por la NASA, como la misión Quesst, que demostrará la tecnología supersónica silenciosa, posiblemente abriendo la puerta a vuelos supersónicos comerciales sobre tierra. Los lectores podrán informarse sobre la misión de Movilidad Aérea Avanzada de la NASA (que tiene como objetivo ayudar al desarrollo de sistemas de transporte aéreo en todo el país), pruebas aeronáuticas en los túneles de viento de la NASA y otras instalaciones, y mucho más.



Las páginas web también contienen contenidos diseñados para jóvenes estudiantes centrados en la ciencia, la tecnología, la ingeniería y las matemáticas (STEM, por sus siglas en inglés), destinados a ayudar a padres y profesores a iniciar a los niños en estos campos de estudio.
