Collins Produces First Prototype Motor for Airlander 10
Collins Aerospace has produced the first working prototype of a 500-kW electric motor suitable for powering the Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) Airlander 10 helium-buoyed hybrid airship. Collins also has begun basic characterization testing of the motor at the University of Nottingham.
Airbus to take up the hydrogen contrail characterisation challenge
Airbus UpNext, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus, has revealed a flight test programme to study the contrails produced by a hydrogen combustion engine as part the Company's ZEROe roadmap. The project, named "Blue Condor", will launch two modified Arcus gliders, one equipped with a hydrogen combustion engine and one equipped with a conventional kerosene-powered combustion engine, in order to compare contrails emitted at high altitudes.
GE XA100, three-stream adaptive cycle design: GE and BAE Systems collaborate to explore next generation adaptive power systems for Combat Air application
The XA100 engine is described as a three-stream adaptive cycle design. It can direct air into the bypass third stream for increased either fuel efficiency or cooling or to the core and fan streams for additional thrust and performance.
