Over the past few decades, we have seen commercial airliners transition from four engines to a standard of two. With airline economics so closely tied to fuel efficiency and maintenance costs, along with the evolution of ETOPS certification, this is far from surprising. It would seem that the next logical step on the efficiency ladder would be to move from two engines to fly on just one. After all, there are several general aviation and military aircraft that do just that. So why are we unlikely to see airlines operating commercial aircraft on a single jet engine anytime soon? Let's dive a little deeper into the topic.
