The Future of General Aviation has landed at AERO

Friedrichshafen – The 30th AERO international aviation trade show began today. Two main topics are in the focus of the globally important trade show: On the one hand, the relaunch of General Aviation after the Corona pandemic and, on the other, a comprehensive sustainability initiative that involves the whole industry. All the major General Aviation companies are present at the event at the shores of Lake Constance.

"This year's AERO is the most important AERO ever," emphasizes AERO organizer Roland Bosch, who handed over the event's project management to Tobias Bretzel yesterday with the start of the leading global trade show for General Aviation. Bosch will, however, remain with AERO as a senior consultant.



633 exhibitors are showcasing their products and services at AERO this year. The need for the show is underscored by the large number of new aircraft and products on display at the four-day event, which runs from April 27 to 30. Kyle Martin, vice president, European Affairs at the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) explains, "The industry has had a banner year with 2021. However, we have the challenge of needing new pilots, engineers and technicians. GAMA has launched a diversity and inclusion initiative in aviation to inspire people to get involved in aviation. Aviation is without a doubt an exciting employer."



Dr. Nicolas von Mende, CEO Atlas Air Service AG says at the start of the trade show: "We found quite a few new customers during the pandemic. Already in August 2020, we saw a recovery in flight activity, and in 2021 we flew more than before Corona. The increase in flight activity continues, so maintenance activity also increased, which is positive for all maintenance companies. The supply chain is less of a challenge than the shortage of skilled labor. Germany and the EU countries are able to attract young people and keep them in the industry. 10 percent of Atlas Air Service's workforce are apprentices, and most stay. In other countries such as the U.S., this problem is greater."



Dominating topics at AERO are aviation's efforts to become more sustainable. Show visitors can find out about the current status of the development of new propulsion technologies and sustainably produced fuels. For example, Stuttgart-based company H2FLY will showcase the HY4, an aircraft that flew from Stuttgart to Friedrichshafen with zero emissions using green hydrogen. Only one day after landing, the aircraft set a new record for hydrogen-electric-powered aircraft on a flight in Friedrichshafen, reaching an altitude of 7,230 feet (2,203 meters). H2FLY is developing its propulsion system as a scalable unit that will also be used to fly a 40-seat regional aircraft with a range of around 2,000 kilometers from 2025. Prof. Dr. Ing. Josef Kallo, the co-founder and CEO of H2FLY: "We have to manage to realize large amounts of transport capacity with the new efficient fuel hydrogen. If we really want to change and minimize emissions, we need efficiency in energy supply and fuels: The currency of the next few years is energy."



The aviation industry is investing heavily in sustainability. AERO highlights companies that are particularly dedicated to this topic through the new AERO Sustainable Aviation Trail. This will be specially marked by green balloons above the stands of the participating companies. In addition to new propulsion systems, special lightweight designs and forward-looking technologies, the trail will also feature energy companies that have begun to offer sustainably produced fuels for aviation to replace fuels from fossil sources.



Suppliers are optimistic about the future after the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, in part because they have developed new equipment and instruments that make pilots' jobs easier and further enhance flight safety. Trevor Pegrum, EMEA Aviation Sales & Marketing Manager at Garmin International, explained at the industry forum at the start of AERO: "The avionics industry has never been healthier and is investing huge sums in innovation. New technologies are making aircraft safer. The pandemic has held some surprises: During the lockdown, people continued to invest in new equipment, especially autopilots. Glass cockpits continue to grow in popularity, and pilot acceptance is also on the rise. We've only been able to meet our customers online for the past two years. But online consulting is not the same as meeting in person. We are happy to be here at AERO. It's never been busier at the Garmin booth than this year.”



Ultralight and LSA aircraft have always formed a very innovative segment of General Aviation. They are always strongly represented at AERO - and 2022 is no exception. Dirk Ketelsen, the CEO of Breezer Aircraft GmbH & Co KG: "We are experiencing good reception. The introduction of the 600-kg class has led to increased demand. We are also seeing that autopilots are popular because of the increased safety. We produce nearly everything ourselves, we only buy the engines and the avionics, but the aircraft are 'made in Germany'."



Dr. Frank Liemandt, spokesman for the German Helicopter Association (DHV), explained in the industry forum, "The helicopter industry has come well through another difficult year. This is mainly due to the versatility of the operational areas. The importance of helicopters was again clearly demonstrated during the flood disaster in summer of 2021 in Germany, among other things. Another special highlight was that we were able to host the premiere of the EUROPEAN ROTORS, which means we now have an annual VTOL show in Europe again, this year once again in Cologne."



Aviation can look back on a tradition of more than 100 years: Junkers Flugzeugwerke AG is transferring that tradition into the future by building original replicas of the Junkers F13, the world's first commercial airliner, as well as the Junkers A50 and the A60 - each as new aircraft that meet today's standards. At AERO, Junkers Flugzeugwerke presented the concept of a replica of the famous Junkers Ju 52, which will fly again in the future as a new aircraft with new RED A03 engines.

With the F2e, Flight Design is also developing an electrically powered aircraft.







Slovenian manufacturer Pipistrel has manufactured over 2,500 aircraft to date. It was the first manufacturer to receive EASA type certification for an electrically powered aircraft, Pipistrel Velis Electro. The company was acquired by Textron this month and forms the basis for the newly founded Textron eAviation division.







Rheinland Air Service (RAS) from Mönchengladbach, Germany, has been the exclusive dealer for Bell Textron's Bell 505 light turbine helicopter since November 2020. The helicopter is a bestseller in its class. The global fleet consists of almost 400 examples and recently surpassed the 100,000 flight hour mark. RAS also represents French aircraft manufacturer Daher, with its TBM family of tubroprop aircraft, and business jet manufacturer Honda Aircraft.







The electrically powered, vertical take-off and landing aircraft eMagic One made by eMagic Aircraft from Grafschaft near Bonn was presented to the public for the first time last November. It impresses with its very low weight and its unique aerodynamic design.







H55's mission is to make air transport, quiet, clean and affordable. The company's patented and certified electric propulsion and battery management technology serves client-based solutions around electric propulsion for both existing aircraft designs, future VTOL and e-Commuter concepts.







The core of H55's proprietary technology is focused on an integrated power, propulsion and battery management system which includes battery packs, connectors, motor, motor controller, pilot interface and power controls. The Republic of Angola orders three Airbus C295s

Getafe, 21 April 2022 – The Republic of Angola has placed a firm order for three Airbus C295s to perform multirole operations. Two aircraft will be specifically equipped for maritime surveillance and one for transport missions.

The aircraft configured for transport missions will be able to carry out tactical cargo and troop transport tasks, paratrooping, load dropping or humanitarian missions.

The two C295s configured as Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) will play a key role for Search and Rescue (SAR), control of illegal fishing and borders, support in case of natural disasters and intelligence-gathering missions, among others. They will be equipped with the Airbus-developed Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS) mission system as well state-of-the-art sensors.

All three aircraft will be equipped with the latest version of the Collins Aerospace Pro Line Fusion avionics suite.

With this new order, the Força Aérea Nacional de Angola becomes the 38th C295 operator worldwide.

Eve and Thales enter a partnership to develop eVTOL aircraft

São José dos Campos, April 20, 2022 – Eve UAM, LLC, an Embraer company, and Thales, a global technology leader providing solutions, services and products in the defence, aeronautics, space, transportation, digital identity and security markets, have teamed up to support the development of Eve’s electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) in Brazil. The strategic partnership involves a series of joint studies over a twelve-month period, which started in January 2022, on the technical, economical and adaptable feasibility of a 100% electrically powered aircraft. Thales will also contribute with its expertise in developing avionics, electric, flight control, navigation, communication, and connectivity systems.


“This partnership will strengthen Eve’s position as a leading player in the global market and our commitment to delivering an effective and sustainable new mode of urban transportation. Embraer is a leading player in aviation in Brazil and globally, and has partnered with Thales for more than thirty years, and now Eve will leverage this partnership too,” said Andre Stein, co-CEO of Eve.

Stuttgart/Friedrichshafen April 19, 2022 – Today H2FLY, the Stuttgart-based developer of hydrogen fuel cell technologies for aircraft, announced that its demonstrator aircraft, the HY4, set what is believed to be a new world record last week for hydrogen-powered passenger aircraft, flying at an altitude of 7,230 feet and confirming the company's position as one of the leading companies in this new sector.

The news comes as the company also flew a 77-mile journey between Stuttgart and Friedrichshafen on April 12th, marking the first time a hydrogen-electric passenger aircraft has been piloted, between two major airports.

The aircraft flew the mission to Friedrichshafen in order to participate in the AERO Friedrichshafen airshow, taking place from April 27th. The HY4 will be presented to the general public for the first time and will be exhibited until the end of April. Up to now, testing of the HY4 has taken place exclusively in the test area around Stuttgart Airport. Stuttgart Airport is a long-term partner of H2FLY and plays a key role in supporting the company with its infrastructure.

The four-seat HY4 has successfully demonstrated the applicability of hydrogen-electric propulsion solutions in aviation during several flight campaigns and with more than 90 takeoffs. It also serves as a test platform to further develop the propulsion system and thus lay the foundation for development work on a hydrogen-electric-powered, 40-seat Dornier 328, which will be developed jointly with Deutsche Aircraft by 2025.

MENLO PARK, Calif., March 29, 2022 (Newswire.com) - HyPoint, the company developing zero carbon-emission turbo air-cooled hydrogen fuel cell systems for aviation and urban air mobility, today announced a partnership with Gloyer-Taylor Laboratories (GTL), an aerospace engineering research and development company, to integrate GTL's advanced carbon composite "BHL™ Cryotank" liquid hydrogen fuel tanks with HyPoint's fuel cell system. BHL™ Cryotanks have demonstrated a 75% mass reduction compared to existing state-of-the-art aerospace cryotanks (metal or composite), enabling hydrogen aircraft and eVTOL makers to store as much as 10 times more liquid hydrogen fuel without adding mass. As a result, aircraft can travel longer distances without refueling. HyPoint also announced that former GE Aviation and Rolls-Royce engineering executive Umeed Ashtiani has joined the company to lead the company's system engineering team and oversee the implementation of the tank technology.

GTL specializes in developing advanced composite prototypes and technologies for aerospace and has won numerous development contracts with NASA, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Air Force, and others. GTL incorporates many polymer-composite manufacturing processes, including filament winding, hand layup, and fiber placement to produce composite components. GTL has fabricated and tested multiple BHL™ Cryotanks at a range of scales and have been demonstrated to be leak-tight even after repeated cryo-thermal pressure cycles. This technology has achieved TRL 5+ and is compatible with a variety of cryogenic propellants including liquid oxygen, liquid methane, and liquid hydrogen.

The pictured BHL™ Cryotank (held by Zachary Taylor, Vice President of Engineering at GTL) measures 2.4 meters long with a 1.2 meter diameter and weighs 12 kilograms (roughly 26 pounds). When a skirt and vacuum dewar shell are added, the total system weight is 67 kilograms. This particular tank system can hold over 150 kilograms of liquid hydrogen, giving it a hydrogen storage ratio of at least 50% (the weight of stored hydrogen fuel relative to total system weight) which is as much as 10 times greater than current state-of-the-art fuel tanks. An aircraft equipped with GTL dewar tank technology could achieve as much as four times the range of a conventional aircraft using aviation fuel, cutting aircraft operating costs by an estimated 50% on a dollar-per-passenger-mile basis.

"Based on our internal analysis of a De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q300, which seats 50 to 56 passengers, the standard PW123B engine would typically support a range of 1,558 kilometers. By implementing HyPoint's system and a standard liquid hydrogen tank, the same aircraft could achieve five hours of flight time or a max range of 2,640 kilometers. With GTL's tank, it could fly for 8.5 hours or a max range of 4,488 kilometers, indicating that this aircraft could fly three times further with zero emissions by using HyPoint and GTL compared with conventional aviation fuel," said Sergei Shubenkov, Co-founder and Head of R&D at HyPoint. "That's the difference between this plane going from New York to Chicago with high carbon emissions versus New York to San Francisco with zero carbon emissions."

ARLINGTON, Va.—The ground-based laser system homed in on the red drone flying by, shooting a high-energy beam invisible to the naked eye. Suddenly, a fiery orange glow flared on the drone, smoke poured from its engine and a parachute opened as the craft tumbled downward, disabled by the laser beam.                     


The February demonstration marked the first time the U.S. Navy used an all-electric, high-energy laser weapon to defeat a target representing a subsonic cruise missile in flight.


Known as the Layered Laser Defense (LLD), the weapon was designed and built by Lockheed Martin to serve as a multi-domain, multi-platform demonstration system. It can counter unmanned aerial systems and fast-attack boats with a high-power laser—and also use its high-resolution telescope to track in-bound air threats, support combat identification and conduct battle damage assessment of engaged targets.


The drone shoot-down by the LLD was part of a recent test sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) at the U.S. Army's High Energy Laser Systems Test Facility at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The demonstration was a partnership between ONR, the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Research and Engineering) and Lockheed Martin.


"Innovative laser systems like the LLD have the potential to redefine the future of naval combat operations," said Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Lorin C. Selby. "They present transformational capabilities to the fleet, address diverse threats, and provide precision engagements with a deep magazine to complement existing defensive systems and enhance sustained lethality in high-intensity conflict."


The LLD testing supports a broader effort by the naval research and development community, partnered closely with the fleet, to mature technologies and field a family of laser weapons that can address multiple threats using a range of escalating options. These capabilities range from non-lethal measures, such as optical "dazzling" and disabling of sensors, to destruction of a target.


Laser weapons provide new precision and speed of engagement for naval warfighters. They also offer simplified logistics that are safer for ships and their crews, as lasers are not dependent on the traditional propellants or gunpowder-based ordnance found on ships.


Instead, modern high-power lasers run on electricity, making them inherently safer and able to provide weapon capability as long as a ship has power. This also means the cost per engagement for a laser weapon can be very low, since the only consumable item expended is fuel to run the system.


For years, the Department of Defense (DoD) and all the Services have recognized the promise of directed-energy weapons such as lasers, and continue to prioritize research. Recently, the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, the Hon. Heidi Shyu, re-affirmed that directed energy is one of the DoD's critical technology areas.


ONR plays an important role in developing technologies for laser weapons and has fielded demonstration systems for operational experimentation. Notably, in 2014 ONR saw the Laser Weapon System tested successfully aboard the USS Ponce in the Persian Gulf. More recently, ONR fielded the Laser Weapon System Demonstrator aboard the USS Portland in 2021.


Although there's no plan to field the LLD, it offers a glimpse into the future of laser weapons. It is compact and powerful, yet more efficient than previous systems. It has specialized optics to observe a target and focus laser beams to maximum effect, while also incorporating artificial intelligence to improve tracking and targeting.


"LLD is an example of what a very advanced laser system can do to defeat significant threats to naval forces," said David Kiel, a former Navy captain who is a program officer in ONR's Aviation, Force Projection and Integrated Defense Department, which managed the testing. "And we have ongoing efforts, both at ONR and in other Navy programs, to keep building on these results in the near future."


During the recent test at White Sands, the LLD tracked or shot down an array of targets—including unmanned fixed-wing aerial vehicles, quadcopters and high-speed drones representative of subsonic cruise missiles.


"We're proud to say that the Layered Laser Defense system defeated a surrogate cruise missile threat in partnership with the Navy, White Sands Missile Range and Army High Energy Laser Systems Test Facility teams. Lockheed Martin drew best-in-class laser weapon subsystems from across the corporation, including key industry partner Rolls Royce, to support the entire threat engagement timeline from target detection to defeat," said Rick Cordaro, vice president, Lockheed Martin Advanced Product Solutions. "We leveraged more than 40 years of directed energy experience to create new capabilities that support the 21st century warfighter."


Dr. Frank Peterkin, ONR's directed energy portfolio manager, said, "The Navy performed similar tests during the 1980s but with chemical-based laser technologies that presented significant logistics barriers for fielding in an operational environment. And, ultimately, those types of lasers did not transition to the fleet or any other Service.


"Today, ONR coordinates closely with the Navy's resourcing and acquisition communities to make sure we develop laser weapon technologies that make sense for the Navy's requirements to defend the fleet and for operations in the rough maritime environment at sea," Peterkin continued. "It's a challenging problem, but Navy leadership at all levels see potential for laser weapons to really make a difference. The next few years are going to be very exciting as we work with the Navy and joint partners to make the capability we just saw demonstrated by the LLD a reality for the naval warfighter."

Nature-inspired wing demonstrator completes wind-tunnel tests | Airbus

Airbus has completed wind-tunnel testing of its eXtra Performance Wing demonstrator in its quest to quickly test and accelerate new technologies that will decarbonise the aviation industry.

The eXtra Performance Wing project, launched last September, takes inspiration from nature to improve wing aerodynamics and performance that is intended to be compatible with any future aircraft configuration and propulsion system to reduce CO₂ emissions.

"The scaled demonstrator will integrate and fly breakthrough wing technologies using a remote-controlled Cessna Citation VII business jet platform in representative flight conditions," explained Oliver Family, Head of eXtra Performance Wing UK.

"The partly 3D-printed wind-tunnel model - expertly built by the aerodynamics team at Airbus' low-speed, wind-tunnel facility in Bristol - is a scaled-down version of the Cessna jet, incorporating the lightweight, long-span design of the eXtra Performance Wing that will provide the emissions benefits we are striving for."

Initially introduced at a smaller scale through another Airbus project, AlbatrossONE, which tested semi-aeroelastic hinged wings that - like the seabird - unlocked during flight when experiencing wind gusts or turbulence, the eXtra Performance Wing will also examine onboard technologies, like gust sensors, pop-up spoilers and multifunctional trailing edges, to enable the active control of the wing.

"Airbus' state-of-the-art low-speed wind-tunnel is a fantastic way to validate our concepts before flight tests," added Oliver Family. "Our computational aerodynamic analysis capability is world class, and the wind tunnel provides another valuable way to measure the performance and capabilities of the aircraft before flight testing. The technologies we have tested in the Filton wind tunnel - many inspired by biomimicry - will now be rapidly integrated for flight testing."

The Airbus low-speed wind tunnel at Filton, near Bristol, replicates conditions similar to aircraft take-off and landing wind speeds but is also used by external organisations testing F1 cars, ship radar systems, Urban Air Mobility vehicles as well as more conventional aircraft.

The eXtra Performance Wing demonstrator is hosted within Airbus UpNext, a wholly-owned Airbus subsidiary, created to give future technologies a development fast-track by building demonstrators at speed and scale in order to evaluate, mature and validate potential new products and services that encompass radical technological breakthroughs.
