Airbus studies “Moon Cruiser” concept for ESA’s cis-lunar transfer vehicle - Space - Airbus

https://www.airbus.com/newsroom/press-releases/en/2021/01/airbus-studies-moon-cruiser-concept-for-esas-cislunar-transfer-vehicle.html

Versatile, autonomous logistics vehicle to support future lunar missions based on heritage from Orion ESM and ATV

Toulouse, 28 January 2021 - Airbus has been awarded a CLTV (Cis-Lunar Transfer Vehicle) study for a "Moon Cruiser" by the European Space Agency (ESA). According to the study concept (two parallel Phase A/B1), the CLTV is a versatile, autonomous logistics vehicle that could, for example, provide timely and efficient support to NASA and ESA in the implementation of the future Artemis Moon missions. The spacecraft will be based on existing and proven technologies and will complement the multipurpose European Large Logistic Lander (EL3).

The execution of lunar missions, including landing on the Moon and setting up upcoming lunar space station, Gateway, is a complex and challenging task for the international community. It requires a precisely planned chain of supply and logistics missions. The Airbus Moon Cruiser concept supports these challenges in several ways:

·         Gateway logistics: the CLTV can transport cargo or fuel for refuelling in lunar orbit and to the Gateway, the international project led by the two main contributors NASA (United States) and ESA (Europe), supporting a sustainable presence on the Moon and exploration beyond and a pillar of NASA's Artemis programme.

·         Transfer of a large Lunar Module into Low Lunar Orbit: The CLTV is required to fly a lander or an ascent stage between the Gateway and the low lunar orbit, to perform landing and ascent missions with larger and more extensive services

·         CLTV's versatility will also allow it to support missions to post-ISS orbital infrastructure in LEO as well as missions in the field of GEO satcom servicing.

The CLTV's design allows multiple mission types to be carried out with a single vehicle and is compatible with various launchers. Airbus' solution is a mature, versatile and modular concept based on a large portfolio of mission and vehicle designs for Human Space-flight and Exploration built by Airbus for ESA including the Orion European Service Module (ESM), as well as five successful Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) space transporter missions, carrying a total of around 30 tonnes of cargo into space.

"With the Airbus Moon Cruiser concept for CLTV, we are establishing the first building blocks for humans and machines to work together all the way between the Earth and the Moon. CLTV can serve Gateway logistics and add value to the EL3 Large Lunar Lander by enabling additional missions, whether standalone for Europe or as part of wider international co-operation," said Andreas Hammer, Head of Space Exploration at Airbus.

The CLTV can be launched on Ariane 6, and it could transport a module of over 4.5 tonnes to the Gateway. The European Space Agency ESA could deploy the CLTV in the second half of the decade and it is planned that the CLTV will literally "cruise" on a direct flight path to the Moon.

The target is to validate the following, implementation phase (B2/C/D) of CLTV at the next Ministerial Council in 2022, with the aim of launching in 2027.

Airbus is building the European Service Module for ESA for the new NASA spacecraft Orion, the central spacecraft of future NASA space exploration. The first service module has already been delivered to NASA by Airbus. A second service module is currently being built at Airbus in Bremen. The first launch for Orion - a test flight without astronauts - will take Orion into a lunar orbit and back to Earth under the Artemis I mission and is scheduled for 2021.

Green Aerolease and Pipistrel Aircraft announce a partnership to accelerate the deployment of electric aviation in France and in Europe – Pipistrel Aircraft

https://www.pipistrel-aircraft.com/green-aerolease-and-pipistrel-aircraft-announce-a-partnership-to-accelerate-the-deployment-of-electric-aviation-in-france-and-in-europe/

Green Aerolease, subsidiary of the W3 group founded by Charles Cabillic, announces the first partnership with Pipistrel Aircraft, world leader in Type-certified electric aviation. This agreement, concluded with the support of the French Federation of Aeronautics, will start with an order of 50 EASA Type-certified 2-seat aircraft Pipistrel Velis Electro, designed for PPL pilot training. This initiative is a part of the group philosophy aiming to accelerate the environmentally responsible transition of light aviation in France and in other European countries.

Pipistrel Aircraft, founded in 1989, is among the world leaders in design and production of affordable environmentally friendly General aviation aircraft. Pioneer in terms of state-of-the-art technology for light aviation, Pipistrel is the first European aircraft manufacturer, and the only one so far, to obtain an aircraft certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for its electric aircraft, the Pipistrel Velis Electro, the ideal aircraft for initial training of pilots. With this Pipistrel proves that electric aircraft is not only possible, but also commercially useful. Velis Electro currently offers the maximum level of performance, which is achievable with current and modern technology.

In the scope of this partnership, Green Aerolease and Pipistrel Aircraft reinforce their commitment in favor of a sustainable air transport sector and of the regional mobility, allowing the deployment of low noise and zero-emission electric aircraft to regional airports and urban areas, where the noise level does not allow piston engine aircraft.

In partnership with the French Federation of Aeronautics, the initial 50 aircraft will be offered for rent to pilot schools and clubs to ensure the new generation of pilot training. Indeed, 84% of clubs think that electric aviation is a solution to environmental constraints and around 70% among them are willing to equip themselves with this new aircraft. In Europe there are more than 100 small GA airports which have severe flight restrictions, or the training there is not allowed because of noise. Velis Electro with only 60 dB of noise can bring back the flight to all of them. The expected deployment, first off in France, will be done as soon as mid-2021 and will spread progressively to several European countries.

Green Aerolease is focused on accompanying and financing the decarbonization of the air transport and light aviation sectors by accelerating breakthrough innovations in the domain of mobilities. Within the next 3 years, 200 Pipistrel electric aircraft are to be deployed in France and in the coming few years to other countries through AAS (Aircraft as A Service). Finesse Max, Pipistrel distributor in France, will work in partnership with Green Aerolease to

manage the support, after-sales service and maintenance network in order to keep the highest availability for the Velis fleet.

According to Charles Cabillic, founder of W3 and Green Aerolease: "We are particularly proud to make this partnership with Pipistrel Aircraft, pioneer of breakthrough innovation in the light aviation sector. I am convinced that the aeronautical sector has a great future, with the progressive arrival within two to three years, of light electric or hybrid aircraft designed for business travel or leisure aviation, because it will permit to revive the French aviation. These future aircraft are, indeed, an answer to the growing stakes of regional mobility to ensure the economical regional continuity and the serving of middle-sized cities. Consequently, it is essential to anticipate from now on the capacity to dispense professional trainings to our future pilots."

According to Ivo Boscarol, founder and CEO of Pipistrel Aircraft: "I am delighted to see the confidence given to us by Green Aerolease who decided to commit with us to participate in the reduction of the environmental impact of the aeronautical sector. The European certification of our Velis Electro, designed for initial training of pilots, is an important step towards the development of a carbon neutral-fleet of aircraft, respectful of the environment. This partnership will allow the use of zero-emission aircraft to the clubs and schools who are not in the position to invest in procuring an aircraft fleet, but they can afford reasonable monthly rental fees. With this concept Green Aerolease will accelerate the energy transition of aviation to climate-neutral and emission-free following the guidelines of the European Green Deal and help Pipistrel to reach its objective to sell 200 Velis Electro until end of 2021."

According to Jean-Luc Charron, president of the French Federation of Aeronautics: "The French Federation of Aeronautics has always supported innovation. With Pipistrel, we created a FabLab two years ago at Toussus-Le-Noble to test this brand-new electric aircraft. Thus, more than 200 flight hours were done with great performances, very important noise reduction and also a tremendous reduction of carbon emissions. After the experimentation, it is now time to deploy the aircraft fleet, and I am very proud to support this project which will allow clubs to create a new dynamic in this aeronautical world which is living an unprecedented transformation."

About Green Aerolease:
Green Aerolease is a subsidiary of the W3 group which organizes the provision of de-carbonized light aircraft by proposing a "ready for use" rental service to aeronautical operators (aeroclubs, piloting schools, airlines, …). The society is aiming to accelerate the ecological transition of light aviation in France and in Europe by proposing a new renting offer, unprecedented in the electric aviation world. http://www.aerolease.green/

About the W3 group:
The W3 group is a Breton group founded in 2009 by Charles Cabillic, which acts essentially in the digital field, investment field and air mobility. After creating aC3 (a software editor dedicated to professionals of real estate) in 2005, sold in 2015, Charles Cabillic developed considerably his activities, gathered in 2009 in the W3 group. The group owns today around 15 companies (the startup accelerator WestWebValley, OpenFly, a renting platform for private planes, AlloVoisins, Green Aerolease…) and employs around 150 people in Brest and its surroundings. www.w3.bzh

About Pipistrel Aircraft: Pipistrel is a world-leading small aircraft designer and manufacturer, specialized in energy-efficient and affordable high-performance aircraft. Hypersonic Superweapons Are a Mirage, New Analysis Says

In an interview, David Wright, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an author of the new analysis, called the superweapon a mirage. “There’re lots of claims and not many numbers,” he said. “If you put in the numbers, you find that the claims are nonsense.”

Original Paper:

Modelling the Performance of Hypersonic Boost-Glide Missiles

Cameron L. Tracy and David Wright, "Modelling the Performance of Hypersonic Boost-Glide Missiles," Science & Global Security, vol. 28, no. 3 (2020)

The United States, Russia, and China are developing an array of hypersonic weapons--maneuverable vehicles that carry warheads through the atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound. Proponents claim that these weapons outperform existing missiles in terms of delivery time and evasion of early warning systems. Here, we report computational modelling of hypersonic boost-glide missile flight which shows that these weapons travel intercontinental distances more slowly than comparable ballistic missiles flying depressed trajectories, and that they remain visible to existing space-based sensors for the majority of flight. Fundamental physical limitations imposed by low-altitude atmospheric flight render hypersonic missiles an evolutionary--not revolutionary--advancement over established ballistic missile technologies. Misperceptions of hypersonic weapon performance have arisen from social processes by which the organizations developing these weapons construct erroneous technical facts favoring continued investment. The modelling reported here provides a basis for rigorous, quantitative analysis of hypersonic weapon performance.

Boeing Commits to Deliver Commercial Airplanes Ready to Fly on 100% Sustainable Fuels

https://boeing.mediaroom.com/2021-01-22-Boeing-Commits-to-Deliver-Commercial-Airplanes-Ready-to-Fly-on-100-Sustainable-Fuels

SEATTLE, Jan. 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) is setting an ambitious target to advance the long-term sustainability of commercial aviation, committing that its commercial airplanes are capable and certified to fly on 100% sustainable aviation fuels by 2030. Boeing has previously conducted successful test flights replacing petroleum jet fuel with 100% sustainable fuels to address the urgent challenge of climate change.

According to the Air Transport Action Group, U.S. Department of Energy and several other scientific studies, sustainable aviation fuels reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% over the fuel's life cycle with the potential to reach 100% in the future. Today, sustainable aviation fuels are mixed directly with conventional jet fuel up to a 50/50 blend — the maximum allowed under current fuel specifications. In order to meet aviation's commitment for reducing carbon emissions by 50% from 2005 levels by 2050, airplanes need the capability to fly on 100% sustainable aviation fuels well before 2050.

"Our industry and customers are committed to addressing climate change, and sustainable aviation fuels are the safest and most measurable solution to reduce aviation carbon emissions in the coming decades," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stan Deal. "We're committed to working with regulators, engine companies and other key stakeholders to ensure our airplanes and eventually our industry can fly entirely on sustainable jet fuels."

Boeing's commitment is to determine what changes are required for its current and future commercial airplanes to fly on 100% sustainable fuels, and to work with regulatory authorities and across the industry to raise the blending limit for expanded use.

"With a long history of innovation in sustainable aviation fuels, certifying our family of airplanes to fly on 100% sustainable fuels significantly advances Boeing's deep commitment to innovate and operate to make the world better," Chief Sustainability Officer Chris Raymond said. "Sustainable aviation fuels are proven, used every day, and have the most immediate and greatest potential to reduce carbon emissions in the near and long term when we work together as an industry."

Boeing has been a pioneer in making sustainable aviation fuels a reality, partnering globally with airlines, industry, governments and research institutions to expand limited supplies and reduce the fuels' cost. Boeing worked with airlines, engine manufacturers and others to conduct biofuel test flights starting in 2008 and gain approval for sustainable fuels in 2011. In 2018, the Boeing ecoDemonstrator flight-test program made the world's first commercial airplane flight using 100% sustainable fuels with a 777 Freighter, in collaboration with FedEx Express.

Sustainable aviation fuels can be made from a wide variety of feedstocks, including non-edible plants, agricultural and forestry waste, non-recyclable household waste, industrial plant off-gassing and other sources. Sustainability of the fuels is assured through strong, credible sustainability certifications through third-party organizations such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials.

Airbus unveils its helicopter Flightlab to test tomorrow’s technologies - Helicopters - Airbus

https://www.airbus.com/newsroom/press-releases/en/2021/01/Airbus-unveils-its-helicopter-Flightlab-to-test-tomorrows-technologies.html

Marignane, 22 January 2021 – Airbus Helicopters has started in-flight tests on board its Flightlab, a platform-agnostic flying laboratory exclusively dedicated to maturing new technologies. Airbus Helicopters' Flightlab provides an agile and efficient test bed to quickly test technologies that could later equip Airbus' current helicopter range, and even more disruptive ones for future fixed-wing aircraft or (e)VTOL platforms.

Airbus Helicopters intends to pursue the testing of hybrid and electric propulsion technologies with its Flightlab demonstrator, as well as exploring autonomy, and other technologies aimed at reducing helicopter sound levels or improving maintenance and flight safety.

"Investing in the future remains essential, even in times of crisis, especially when those innovations bring added value to our customers by targeting increased safety, reduced pilot workload, and reduced sound levels," said Bruno Even, Airbus Helicopters CEO. "Having a dedicated platform to test these new technologies brings the future of flight a step closer and is a clear reflection of our priorities at Airbus Helicopters," he added.

Flight tests started last April when the demonstrator was used to measure helicopter sound levels in urban areas and to particularly study how buildings may affect people's perception. First results show that buildings play an important role in masking or amplifying sound levels and these studies will be instrumental when the time comes for sound modelling and regulation setting, especially for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) initiatives. Testing was pursued in December to evaluate the Rotor Strike Alerting System (RSAS) aimed at alerting crews about the imminent risk of collision with the main and tail rotors.

Tests this year will include an image-detection solution with cameras to enable low altitude navigation, the viability of a dedicated Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) for light helicopters, and an Engine Back-up System, which will provide emergency electric power in the event of a turbine failure. Testing on the Flightlab will continue in 2022 in order to evaluate a new ergonomic design of intuitive pilot flight controls intended to further reduce pilot workload, which could be applicable to traditional helicopters as well as other VTOL formulas such as UAM.

The Flightlab is an Airbus-wide initiative, which reflects the company's approach to innovation focused on delivering value to customers.  Airbus already has several well-known Flightlabs such as the A340 MSN1, used to assess the feasibility of introducing laminar flow wing technology on a large airliner, and the A350 Airspace Explorer used to evaluate connected cabin technologies inflight.

AERO 2021 TO BE HELD IN THE SUMMER

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Global Show for General Aviation will be unable to start as planned on April 21, 2021 on the exhibition grounds in Friedrichshafen. "Following the cancellation of the event last year, the uncertainties surrounding the pandemic coupled with the renewed lockdown extension unfortunately mean that AERO Friedrichshafen will have to be postponed. With the aim of creating clear parameters for all our customers and partners, we have now decided at this relatively early stage to hold our upcoming AERO as a summer edition from July 14 to July 17, 2021, in Friedrichshafen,” stated Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann.
Head of AERO Roland Bosch and project manager Tobias Bretzel explained the course correction as follows: "A few weeks ago we started off the new year with confidence and hope. Metaphorically speaking, it was clear flying for the first few days, but we now find ourselves faced, once again, with a thick fog on the landing runway. In fact, we are already able to forecast that it will not be possible to hold AERO 2021 as an international trade show in April as planned. However, the large overall number of bookings and the very positive feedback that we have received about AERO have encouraged us to plan a summer edition of the event for July. While we are fully aware that this will be yet another challenge for all of us, we are very confident that we are doing the right thing. Indeed, we view this revamp as a great opportunity to stage this all-important gathering of the entire GA family in pleasant summer conditions.”

The idea of a summer edition of AERO has already received prominent endorsements from within the industry. "AERO Friedrichshafen provides the global general aviation industry the opportunity to showcase its latest innovations. It has also become a premier setting for discussions about the current affairs and future of the industry in Europe. GAMA looks forward to our continued participation in this valuable general aviation expo - also at the upcoming summer edition from 14th - 17th July 2021”, explained Pete Bunce, President and CEO of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA). Walter Da Costa - Chief Sales Officer (CSO) Tecnam Aircraft stated: "As safety is our mantra, Tecnam is happy to support AERO Germany in its decision of postponing the event in summertime. We hope that the difficult days will be gone and this could revamp the General Aviation community in a further step forward. For sure we all will be back stronger than ever." Trevor Pegrum, Garmin Aviation Sales and Marketing Manager, Europe agrees: "We applaud AERO organizers for shifting the dates of this marquee event after careful deliberation regarding global health considerations, while also understanding the value AERO has for the European Aviation industry. We look forward to participating in AERO this year and in the future years to showcase the latest Garmin products.”

Those exhibitors who already registered for the AERO Friedrichshafen event that was to be held in April will receive detailed information about the new summer edition in the next few days. To streamline our organizational processes, we kindly ask other interested parties to discuss their tradeshow stand participation in the summer edition of AERO with the project team before the end of January, if possible. Additionally, we advise all our patrons and customers to arrange for accommodations as soon as possible, as the Lake Constance region is a popular holiday destination in July, particularly under current circumstances.

The 2021 summer edition of AERO Friedrichshafen will run from July 14 to July 17.

Permite repararlo?

Nuestro material permite reparar delaminaciones y arañazos.
