The rollout ceremony of the new Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) for the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) took place at the Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation’s (AIDC’s) Sha-lu complex on September 24, 2019. The ceremony was officiated by Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen and was attended by officials from the R.O.C.’s National Security Council, the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Economic Affairs as well as R.O.C. legislators and distinguished representatives from the international and domestic aerospace industry as well as AIDC itself.
The impressive exterior painting of the AJT incorporated the red, white and blue colors of Taiwan’s national flag. At the ceremony, the aircraft was officially named by the President Tsai as the Yung-ying (Brave Eagle) which won the online voting contest participated by the public. Sitting in the cockpit, President Tsai recognized the outstanding performance of the aircraft upon being briefed by an AIDC flight instructor.

President Tsai later inspected aircraft components manufactured in Taiwan and the Ground-Based Training System (GBTS) developed by the National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) which was showcased for the first time at the event. The GBTS enhances the overall training results and efficiently saves operational and maintenance costs of the aircraft through customized flight simulation and computer-aided training system for logistics and maintenance. With readily available and comprehensive ground testing and flight test data, the fleet management, maintenance throughout 30-year lifespan and performance upgrade of the aircraft can be performed domestically in Taiwan.

By incorporating 80 percent improvement into the design of the F-CK-1 Ching-kuo, the indigenous defensive fighter (IDF), the AJT has the aerodynamic characteristics such as low air resistance and high angle of attack and uses F124-200TW, an engine jointly produced by AIDC and ITEC. Moreover, the flight characteristics were enhanced since the weight was greatly reduced because of significant changes in the air structure and increased utilization of composite materials.

To meet ROCAF’s requirement of the AJT, the cross-section of the wing was modified to lower the velocity of approach and increase the stability during low-speed flight, which allows the pilots-in-training to acquire the basic flight skills and develop basic combat skills in a short time.

The parting line of the aircraft was raised to increase the fuel carriage capacity in order to extend flight duration and range. Main landing gears were re-positioned to strengthen taxiing stability. The digital flight control system and multiple avionics were manufactured either by Taiwanese companies or under co-production with foreign partners, which ensure that Taiwan has the ability to upgrade and modify the software and hardware of the aircraft. Furthermore, the AJT and the IDF share many of the system components, allowing the ROCAF to shorten pilot training and reduce logistics and maintenance costs.

Taking into consideration the streamlining of ROCAF’s pilot training program, several aircraft configurations were planned in the design phase. It was finally determined that the AJT would use the IDF as its reference aircraft which would allow the AJT to perform a key role in both advanced flight training and lead-in fighter training. As there are certain systems, subsystems and components common to both the AJT and the IDF, problems of diminishing manufacturing sources, logistics and maintenance are minimized.

The agreement of the AJT project was signed between the ROCAF and the NCSIST on February 7, 2017. AIDC was commissioned by the NCSIST on April 25, 2017 and the aircraft assembly process began on June 1, 2018. The AJT is on schedule to make its first flight in June 2020. The ceremony also featured a 5-minute video highlighting major activities in the 480 days from assembly to the rollout ceremony.

In addition to adopting the colors in the national flag, the geometric shapes at the aircraft’s after section and on its underside demonstrate the spirit of rocketing up and marching forward. The aircraft is to replace the AT-3 and the F-5E/F and will reduce pilot training process from three stages, three types to three stages, two types In addition to satisfying a vital requirement of the ROCAF, the AJT also serves as the cornerstone and manifestation of the Taiwan government’s policy of developing indigenous defensive systems

SEATTLE, Sept. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] and Air New Zealand today finalized an order for eight 787-10 Dreamliner airplanes valued at $2.7 billion at list prices. The carrier, recognized for its long-range flights and global network, will integrate the largest Dreamliner model into its world-class fleet of 787-9 and 777 airplanes from 2022 to strategically grow its business.

The airplane deal, announced in May as a commitment, includes options to increase the number of aircraft from eight up to 20, and substitution rights that allow a switch from the larger 787-10 to smaller 787-9s, or a combination of the two models for future fleet and network flexibility.

"This is an exciting decision for our business and our customers as we deliver on our commitment to grow our business sustainably. With the 787-10 offering around 15 percent more space for both customers and cargo than the 787-9, this investment creates the platform for our future strategic direction and opens up new opportunities to grow," said Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon.

As the largest member of the passenger-pleasing and super-efficient Dreamliner family, the 787-10 is 224 feet long (68 meters) and can seat up to 330 passengers in a standard two-class configuration, about 40 more than the 787-9. Powered by a suite of new technologies and a revolutionary design, the 787-10 set a new benchmark for fuel efficiency and operating economics when it entered commercial service last year. The airplane allows operators to achieve 25 percent better fuel efficiency per seat compared to the previous airplanes in its class.

The new Dreamliner aircraft will replace Air New Zealand's fleet of eight 777-200ERs. Air New Zealand's widebody fleet also includes seven 777-300ERs.

Boeing Australia collaborates on AI research for unmanned systems

BRISBANE, Australia, Sept. 25, 2019 — Boeing [NYSE:BA] is partnering with Australia’s Trusted Autonomous Systems Defence Cooperative Research Centre (DCRC) to develop advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to create smarter unmanned systems for global forces. Embedding machine learning techniques on-board will help unmanned systems better understand and react to threat environments.

“Over the next 12 months, Boeing Australia will design and test cognitive AI algorithms to enable sensing under anti-access conditions and to navigate and conduct enhanced tactics in denied environments,” said Dr. Shane Arnott, director of Phantom Works International.

Boeing Australia’s first innovation project with the DCRC will examine an unmanned system’s route planning, location, and identification of objects and the platform’s subsequent behavioural response.

The DCRC for Trusted Autonomous Systems was announced by the Australian Government in 2017 to support the rapid creation and transition of industry-led trustworthy smart-machine technologies through the innovation ecosystem to the Australian Defence Force.

Boeing MQ-25 Unmanned Aerial Refueler Completes First Test Flight

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 19, 2019 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the U.S. Navy today successfully completed the first test flight of the MQ-25™ unmanned aerial refueler.

The MQ-25 test asset, known as T1, completed the autonomous two-hour flight under the direction of Boeing test pilots operating from a ground control station at MidAmerica St. Louis Airport in Mascoutah, Ill., where the test program is based. The aircraft completed an autonomous taxi and takeoff and then flew a pre-determined route to validate the aircraft’s basic flight functions and operations with the ground control station.

“Seeing MQ-25 in the sky is a testament to our Boeing and Navy team working the technology, systems and processes that are helping get MQ-25 to the carrier,” said Boeing MQ-25 Program Director Dave Bujold. “This aircraft and its flight test program ensures we’re delivering the MQ-25 to the carrier fleet with the safety, reliability and capability the U.S. Navy needs to conduct its vital mission.”

The Boeing-owned test asset is a predecessor to the engineering development model (EDM) aircraft and is being used for early learning and discovery to meet the goals of the U.S. Navy’s accelerated acquisition program. Boeing will produce four EDM MQ-25 air vehicles for the U.S. Navy under an $805 million contract awarded in August 2018.

The MQ-25 will provide the Navy with a much-needed carrier-based unmanned aerial refueling capability. It will allow for better use of the combat strike fighters currently performing the tanking role and will extend the range of the carrier air wing.

“Today’s flight is an exciting and significant milestone for our program and the Navy,” said the Navy’s Unmanned Carrier Aviation (PMA-268) Program Manager Capt. Chad Reed. “The flight of this test asset two years before our first MQ-25 arrives represents the first big step in a series of early learning opportunities that are helping us progress toward delivery of a game-changing capability for the carrier air wing and strike group commanders.”

T1 received its experimental airworthiness certificate from the FAA in September, verifying that the air vehicle meets the agency’s requirements for safe flight. Testing will continue with T1 to further early learning and discovery that advances major systems and software development.

Getafe, 24 September 2019 – The Airbus A400M new generation airlifter has successfully achieved its first helicopter air-to-air refueling contacts with an H225M. Over the course of 4 flights, operated in day conditions over the south of France, the A400M performed 51 dry contacts marking a decisive milestone towards its full capability as a tanker. These tests were performed under the coordination of the French “DGA Essais en vol” flight test centre.


The tests, involving no fuel and performed between 1,000 ft and 10,000 ft at flight speeds as low as 105 knots, confirmed the positive results of previous proximity flights conducted at the beginning of 2019. The next step in the flight test program will involve wet contact operations scheduled to take place before the end of 2019 ahead of final certification in 2021.


The flight test campaign also included the first proximity trials between the A400M and an H160 helicopter requested by the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) in the frame of the feasibility study for the Guépard (future military multirole helicopter for the French armed forces). Tests were performed successfully.

A400M as a tanker




The A400M is certified to be quickly configured as a tanker, not requiring a dedicated aircraft version. The A400M carries up to 50.8 tonnes (111,600 lb) of fuel in its wings and centre wing box, without compromising any cargo hold area. Two additional cargo hold tanks can also be installed, providing an additional 5.7 tonnes (11,400 lb) of fuel each. The fuel carried in the extra tanks can be of a different nature to the fuel in the main tanks. This enables the A400M to cater for the needs of different types of receiver aircraft.


As a tanker, the A400M has already demonstrated its ability to refuel fighter receivers such as Eurofighter, Rafale, Tornado or F/A-18 at their preferred speeds and altitudes, and is also able to refuel other large aircraft such as another A400M for buddy refueling, C295 or C-130.


Helicopter air-to-air refuelling is a military tactical operation that involves low speeds and low altitudes. After this achievement and its final certification the A400M will become one of the few tanker aircraft in the world capable of performing such an operation.

Airbus demonstrates ACH160 on yacht for first time

Airbus Corporate Helicopters (ACH) will this week begin demonstrating the world’s most advanced medium helicopter – the ACH160 – to prospective customers at the Monaco Yacht Show, the world’s foremost super yacht event.

The aircraft will form the centrepiece of a triumvirate of Airbus helicopters also including the market-leading ACH145 and the lighter ACH135 – all fitted to purpose for yacht operations.

The ACH160 promises to be a striking sight over Monaco’s bay on 26th September with a landing and take-off from the 139m Lürssen Flying Fox. It sets a new benchmark in corporate transportation with a blend of innovative technology, speed, comfort and style. Its interior concept is the result of a collaboration between ACH Creative Style Studio and Harrison Eidsgaard, one of the most sought after names in the superyacht design industry.

The first two ACH160 are already on the final assembly line at Airbus’ Marignane plant. EASA Certification of the H160 in transport configuration is due by the end of the year and the first ACH160 will be delivered next year.

Also on display will be an ACH135, equipped with Airbus’ ACH Line in-house interior, embarked on M/Y Bintador, a Tankoa-built 50m yacht at location C09.

The range is rounded off by an ACH145 based on the terrace of the Yacht Club de Monaco. This helicopter is finished in the Mercedes Benz Style Special Edition.

Visitors can also see the latest release of the ACH Yacht Interface App, a tool dedicated to supporting yacht designers and shipbuilders in integrating ACH aircraft into new yacht projects. This tool provides key preliminary information for incorporating ACH helicopters on-board and serves to prevent costly retrofits.

We handed over our first production E195-E2 to leasing giant AerCap and launch operator Azul Airlines of Brazil at a ceremony in São José dos Campos this morning. Members of the local and international press attended the event.
Mr. Aengus Kelly, CEO and Executive Director of AerCap Holdings NV, the world largest aircraft leasing company, and Mr. John Rodgerson, CEO of Azul Linhas Aéreas, received the keys to the big E2.
Azul has placed a total firm order of 51 E195-E2s.

Airbus forecasts need for over 39,000 new aircraft in the next 20 years

The world’s passenger and freighter aircraft fleet is set to more than double from today’s nearly 23,000 to almost 48,000 by 2038 with traffic growing at 4.3% annually, also resulting in a need for 550,000 new pilots and 640,000 new technicians.

By 2038, of the forecast 47,680 fleet, 39,210 are new and 8,470 remain from today. By updating fleets with latest generation fuel efficient aircraft such as the A220, A320neo Family, the A330neo and the A350, Airbus believes it will largely contribute to the progressive decarbonisation of the air transport industry and the objective of carbon neutral growth from 2020 while connecting more people globally.

Reflecting today’s evolving aircraft technology, Airbus has simplified its segmentation to consider capacity, range and mission type. For example, a short haul A321 is Small (S) while the long-haul A321LR or XLR can be categorised as Medium (M). While the core market for the A330 is classified as Medium (M), it is likely a number will continue to be operated by airlines in a way that sits within the Large (L) market segmentation along with the A350 XWB.

The new segmentation gives rise to a need for 39,210 new passenger and freighter aircraft -29,720 Small (S), 5,370 Medium (M) and 4,120 Large (L) - according to Airbus’ latest Global Market Forecast 2019-2038. Of these, 25,000 aircraft are for growth and 14,210 are to replace older models with newer ones offering superior efficiency.

Resilient to economic shocks, air traffic has more than doubled since 2000. It is increasingly playing a key role in connecting large population centres, particularly in emerging markets where the propensity to travel is amongst the world’s highest as cost or geography make alternatives impossible. Today, about a quarter of the world’s urban population is responsible for more than a quarter of global GDP, and given both are key growth drivers, Aviation Mega Cities (AMCs) will continue to power the global aviation network. Developments in superior fuel efficiency are further driving demand to replace existing less fuel efficient aircraft.

“The 4% annual growth reflects the resilient nature of aviation, weathering short term economic shocks and geo-political disturbances. Economies thrive on air transportation. The Air Force’s all-new advanced trainer aircraft, the T-X, has officially been named the T-7A Red Hawk.

Acting Secretary of the Air Force Matthew Donovan made the announcement during his speech at the 2019 Air Force Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Sept. 16.

Donovan was joined on stage by one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, Col. Charles McGee, who flew more than 400 combat missions in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Also seated in the audience were members of the East Coast Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen.

After a short video highlighting the aircraft’s lineage, Donovan said, “ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the newest Red Tail!” A drape was then lifted to reveal a quarter-scale model of a T-7A Red Hawk painted in a distinct, red-tailed color scheme.

“The name Red Hawk honors the legacy of Tuskegee Airmen and pays homage to their signature red-tailed aircraft from World War II,” Donovan said. “The name is also a tribute to the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, an American fighter aircraft that first flew in 1938 and was flown by the 99th Fighter Squadron, the U.S. Army Air Forces’ first African American fighter squadron.”

The Tuskegee Airmen subsequently painted their Republic P-47 Thunderbolts and North American P-51 Mustangs with a red-tailed paint scheme.

The T-7A Red Hawk, manufactured by Boeing, introduces capabilities that prepare pilots for fifth generation fighters, including high-G environment, information and sensor management, high angle of attack flight characteristics, night operations and transferable air-to-air and air-to-ground skills.

“The T-7A will be the staple of a new generation of aircraft,” Donovan said. “The Red Hawk offers advanced capabilities for training tomorrow’s pilots on data links, simulated radar, smart weapons, defensive management systems, as well as synthetic training capabilities.”

Along with updated technology and performance capabilities, the T-7A will be accompanied by enhanced simulators and the ability to update system software faster and more seamlessly. The plane was also designed with maintainers in mind by utilizing easy-to-reach and open access panels.

The T-7A features twin tails, slats and big leading-edge root extensions that provide deft handling at low speeds, allowing it to fly in a way that better approximates real world demands and is specifically designed to prepare pilots for fifth-generation aircraft. The aircraft’s single engine generates nearly three times more thrust than the dual engines of the T-38C Talon which it is replacing.

“The distance between the T-38 and an F-35 is night and day,” said Air Force Chief of Staff General David L. Goldfein. “But with the T-7A the distance is much, much smaller, and that’s important because it means the pilots trained on it will be that much better, that much faster at a time when we must be able to train to the speed of the threat.”

A $9.2 billion contract awarded to Boeing in September 2018 calls for 351 T-7A aircraft, 46 simulators and associated ground equipment to be delivered and installed, replacing Air Education and Training Command’s 57-year-old fleet of T-38C Talons.

The first T-7A aircraft and simulators are scheduled to arrive at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, in 2023. All undergraduate pilot training bases will eventually transition from the T-38C to the T-7A. Those bases include Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi; Laughlin AFB and Sheppard AFB, Texas; and Vance AFB, Oklahoma.

Embraer Delivers the First Multi-mission Airlift KC-390 to the Brazilian Air Force

Anápolis, Brazil, September 4th, 2019 - Embraer delivered today to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) the first multi-mission airlift KC-390 at a ceremony held at Anápolis Air Base, in the mid-western state of Goiás, starting preparations for the aircraft’s entry into service by FAB’s First Troop Transport Group (1st GTT). Embraer has been conducting theoretical and practical training with the Air Force teams to start operations. The KC-390 was developed as a joint project between the Brazilian Air Force and Embraer to set new standards for efficiency and productivity in its class, while presenting the lowest life-cycle cost in the market. The program represents a significant advance in terms of technology and innovation for the Brazilian aeronautics industry and an operational improvement for FAB's transport aviation. In 2014, FAB signed a firm order for 28 units of the KC-390 aircraft and initial logistical support. The aircraft are produced at the Gavião Peixoto factory, in São Paulo state. The KC-390 was granted the Type Certificate by the Brazilian civil aviation authority ANAC (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil) in 2018, when it achieved Initial Operational Capability (IOC), which ensures that the necessary conditions have been met for the aircraft to start operations. “The incorporation of the KC-390 into the Brazilian Air Force is a milestone in military aviation. Its modernity will bring an implementation and improvement in the doctrine of use of this multi-mission vector, greatly contributing to the fulfillment of the mission to control, defend and integrate the 22 million square kilometers under our responsibility”, said the Brazilian Air Force Commander, Lieutenant-Brigadier Antonio Carlos Moretti Bermudez. “The entry into service of the KC-390 by FAB represents an important milestone for the program and it will certainly increase the growing international interest for this aircraft, consolidating the path to new sales”, said Jackson Schneider, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “We are confident that the KC-390, in addition to successfully fulfilling the missions required by our Air Force, will have a positive economic impact on job creation and new investments in Brazil, as well as high value-added exports.” In order to maximize the operational availability of the KC-390 fleet in the fulfillment of the respective missions, FAB and Embraer Services & Support signed a comprehensive five-year services and support contract. Under the agreement, Embraer’s portfolio of solutions TechCare will be responsible for logistical and engineering support, maintenance control, component repair, support staff for the aircraft entry into service, materials supply and an additional package that includes structural analysis, maintenance bulletin development, and aircraft painting, among other services. The KC-390, which was recently ordered by the Portuguese Government, can carry out various missions including humanitarian support, medical evacuation, search and rescue, forest fire fighting and superior cargo and troop transport and launch capabilities, as well as aerial refueling. Equipped with two International Aero Engines V2500 turbofan engines, the latest avionics, a rear ramp, and an advanced cargo handling system, the KC-390 is capable of carrying up to 26 metric tons of cargo at a maximum speed of 470 knots (870 km/h), with ability to operate in austere environments, including unpaved or damaged runways. The aircraft can carry troops, pallets, armored wheeled vehicles and helicopters. The performance of the KC-390 benefits from a modern fly-by-wire control system with integrated technology that lowers the workload of the crew and increases the safety of its operation. Furthermore, the KC-390 can refuel other aircraft in flight, with the installation of removable internal fuel tanks. The aircraft can also be refueled in flight, thus providing greater flexibility for longer missions. An advanced self-defense system increases the aircraft’s survival capability in hostile environments.

Airbus has completed the upgrade of the Port of Sydney VTS (Vessel Traffic Services), through its maritime product family STYRIS®. Airbus’ maritime security and safety solution ensures the complete traffic monitoring of Sydney Habour and Port Botany, both managed by the Port Authority of New South Wales (Port Authority).



The recently completed upgrade of Sydney’s VTS to STYRIS® comes after the agreement signed in 2010, when Airbus was initially awarded the contract to supply the Sydney VTS system. In 2019, with this upgrade Airbus offers the Port Authority the latest VTS Product Generation of Airbus, providing an efficient way to manage the increasing vessel traffic while meeting updated local VTS regulations. Airbus has also extended the radar coverage of the Sydney VTS with the integration of a new radar site, located in Circular Quay, following the relocation of the former 115 metre high AMP Building radar to a new home in Darling Harbour.



With an offshore overview for pre-planning all vessel entries, the Airbus VTS system provides the Port Authority with real-time maritime information, helps organise port traffic, provide navigation assistance to vessels entering Sydney waters and ensures smooth operational conditions.



The Port of Sydney is arranged in two distinct areas: Port Jackson (commonly named Sydney Harbour), home to the famous and distinct Sydney Opera House and heritage-listed Sydney Harbour Bridge and Port Botany. While Port Botany plays a significant part in the trade handled through the Ports, Sydney Harbour also receives a large number of daily vessel movements, from small leisure boats to the largest passenger cruise ships, through the Passenger Terminals. In addition, there are large volumes of Sydney ferry services that form part of the city public transportation network with its hub is located in Circular Quay.



The Sydney waters with their high density of traffic represent a complex environment to manage for the Port Authority, whose focus is not only to drive the operational efficiency of Sydney Ports but also to ensure every movement is conducted safely for all who use the busy waterways.



Each year, the Port of Sydney becomes ever busier, with over 1,200 vessel visits in 2018 including 350 cruise ships, some of which can carry up to 5,000 passengers plus crew, and 1.6 million passengers passing through Port Authority terminals.



The VTS system is a major component of Sydney waters operational safety management and especially in the monitoring of key events such as the popular Sydney New Year’s Eve Midnight Fireworks, the Australia Day Regatta and the annual 630 nautical mile (1,170 km) Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

The Copernicus satellite will now undergo extensive testing, with its launch set for November 2020



Friedrichshafen, 03 September 2019 – Airbus has completed the ocean satellite ‘Copernicus Sentinel-6A’, and is now sending it on its first journey. Its destination: Ottobrunn near Munich in Germany, where over the next six months the satellite will undergo an extensive series of tests at Industrieanlagen Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (IABG) to prove its readiness for space.



‘Copernicus Sentinel-6’ will carry out high-precision measurements of ocean surface topography. The satellite will measure its distance to the ocean surface with an accuracy of a few centimetres and, over a mission lasting up to seven years, use this data to map it, repeating the cycle every 10 days. It will document changes in sea-surface height, record and analyse variations in sea levels and observe ocean currents. Exact observations of changes in sea-surface height provide insights into global sea levels, the speed and direction of ocean currents, and ocean heat storage. These measurements are vital for modelling the oceans and predicting rises in sea levels.



The findings will enable governments and institutions to establish effective protection for coastal regions. The data will be invaluable not only for disaster relief organisations, but also for authorities involved in urban planning, securing buildings or commissioning dykes.



Global sea levels are currently rising by an average of 3.3 millimetres a year as a result of global warming; this could potentially have dramatic consequences for countries with densely populated coastal areas.



Two Sentinel-6 satellites for the European Copernicus Programme for environment and security are currently being developed under Airbus’s industrial leadership. While it is one of the European Union’s family of Copernicus satellite missions, Sentinel-6 is also being realised thanks to an international cooperation between ESA, NASA, NOAA and Eumetsat.



Each satellite weighs approximately 1.5 tonnes. From November 2020, Sentinel-6A will be the first of the two Sentinel-6 satellites to continue collecting satellite-based measurements of the oceans’ surfaces, a task that began in 1992. Sentinel-6B is then expected to follow in 2025.

Volotea will support DΔnte aeronautical to develop a state-of-the-art hybrid-electric aircraft

Barcelona, 4th September 2019, Volotea, the airline of mid and small‐sized European cities has reached an agreement with DΔNTE Aeronautical to collaborate in the project to develop a hybrid-electric aircraft for transportation of passengers.

Volotea is partnering with DΔNTE on a long-term project for the configuration of a state-of-the-art hybrid-electric small aircraft suitable to operate small inexistent routes in the next decade.

The new aircraft will be eventually able to serve routes between small and mid-size communities, where traditional aircraft are not profitable and other transport alternatives are not available.

This environmentally friendly project is led by DΔNTE Aeronautical and in which, apart from Volotea, other renowned institutions like Instituto de Empresa in Spain, ALTRAN in Europe and University of Sydney and University of Adelaide in Australia are taking part.

This project intends to boost the economic development of rural environments and underserved touristic destinations constrained today by reduced transport alternatives.

Additionally, the new concept will reduce emissions significantly through the use of electric motors, fed by electricity stored by batteries or generated on board with a highly-efficient internal combustion engine.

Industry objectives like IATA´s reduction in net aviation CO2 emissions of 50% by 2050 (relative to 2005 levels) will only be possible by a change of paradigm. The introduction of alternative technologies to conventional jet engines and turbo propellers are key to achieve that goal.

“As part of our proactive environmental policy, Volotea will actively collaborate with DΔNTE Aeronautical in the development of this hybrid-electric aircraft, in order to support the reduction of carbon emissions and noise from aircraft operations. Volotea will provide DΔNTE with market analysis and technical data. Volotea engineers and commercial specialists have been appointed and made available to validate this market opportunity and provide technical support as well”, Carlos Muñoz, Founder and CEO of Volotea stated.



DΔNTE is an aerospace start-up with presence both in Spain and Australia, created to innovate in the aircraft industry with the integration of advanced manufacturing technologies, aerodynamics and electric power plants.

For that purpose, DΔNTE has commenced the design of a 19 to 35 passenger aircraft with all thrust provided by Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP), batteries for energy storage and an internal combustion turbo-generator working as “range extender”.

It is envisaged that this technology will allow the commercialization of future full electric aircraft. Although DΔNTE´s plans include a future retrofit to a battery only power-plant, this approach is not deemed commercially realistic until the 2030´s. Instead DΔNTE considers its hybrid solution will reduce fuel consumption and emissions more than 50% much sooner than that.

“If we want to make aviation more sustainable, we need to find the sweet spot between ambitious emissions reduction targets and realistic economic propositions. A full electric aircraft is a nice long term goal, but it will have very little impact in the near term if it is just a niche product for wealthy individuals. Electric powerplants with additional hybrid range extenders represent instead a real opportunity to reduce emissions drastically in the shorter term, because they enable a new market for door to door regional air transport with competitive costs. In DΔNTE we are developing the right technology, and Volotea is showing the drive and interest to make it a commercial reality”, Miguel Madinabeitia, co-founder of DΔNTE Aeronautical.

DΔNTE will work with Volotea to define the specifications of this future air passenger commuter to better adapt the aircraft to the most promising markets and routes where the new technology may be introduced in the future.

In order to validate the market opportunity, DΔNTE and Volotea will working closely and also with business schools like Instituto de Empresa in Spain or University of Adelaide in Australia, to estimate and size a new air transport segment that could be monetised and create thousands of jobs.

Upon the successful completion of this first phase, DΔNTE will enter into the detail design and manufacturing of a scaled prototype to be flight-tested as a prior step to its full industrialization and future commercialization. Volotea and DΔNTE expect their hybrid aircraft will be a commercial reality by mid next decade.

A preliminary configuration is already in place but DΔNTE will work in coming months with top aerospace renowned engineering and research organizations, like ALTRAN in Europe and University of Sydney in Australia to validate all the technical hypothesis and have a basic design that will underpin a future flight test phase.

Volotea’s Growth




Volotea, the airline of European mid and small-sized cities, has carried more than 25 millionth passengers since its first flight in 2012 and 6.6 million in 2018.

DΔNTE Aeronautical is a start-up with a vision to use the aviation electrification revolution that is coming upon us to develop the best aircraft to sustainably connect small and mid-size communities with point to point thin haul routes. For that purpose DΔNTE has identified a market segment long time underserved by aircraft manufacturers (and gradually by airlines) and researched how new electric and hybrid technologies can make a thin haul commuter competitive vs slower means of transport, enabled by developments in other industries, particularly automotive.

DΔNTE has been created to revolutionize the industry with a change of paradigm. DΔNTE is the project of two aerospace professionals and entrepreneurs that started the company in Madrid in 2018, but that today include teams both in Spain and Australia. DΔNTE has secured funding to undertake the preliminary aircraft design, including validation of its main technical and economical hypothesis. DΔNTE is already receiving expressions of interest to participate in a funding Series A that the company will use to develop its first flying prototypes.
