Abstract
With civil aviation growing at around 4.7% per annum, the environmental footprint of aviation is increasing. Moreover, the use of kerosene as a fuel accelerates the depletion of non-renewable fossil fuels and increases global warming. Hence, the aviation industry has to come up with new technologies to reduce its environmental impact and make aviation more sustainable. An electrically assisted propulsion system can combine the benefits of an electrical power source with a conventional turbofan engine. However, the additional electrical system increases the weight of the aircraft and complexity of the power management system. The objective of this research is to analyze the effect of an assistive electrical system on the performance of a turbofan engine for an A320 class aircraft on a short-range mission. The developed simulation model consists of an aircraft performance model combined with a propulsion model. The power management strategy is integrated within the simulation model. With the proposed propulsion system and power management strategy, the electrically assisted propulsion system would be able to reduce fuel burn, total energy consumption, and emissions for short-range missions of around 1000 km.

MANASSAS, Va., Jan. 23, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] yesterday successfully completed the first test flight of its autonomous passenger air vehicle (PAV) prototype in Manassas, Virginia. Boeing NeXt, which leads the company's urban air mobility efforts, utilized Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences to design and develop the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and will continue testing to advance the safety and reliability of on-demand autonomous air transportation.
The PAV prototype completed a controlled takeoff, hover and landing during the flight, which tested the vehicle's autonomous functions and ground control systems. Future flights will test forward, wing-borne flight, as well as the transition phase between vertical and forward-flight modes. This transition phase is typically the most significant engineering challenge for any high-speed VTOL aircraft.
"In one year, we have progressed from a conceptual design to a flying prototype," said Boeing Chief Technology Officer Greg Hyslop. "Boeing's expertise and innovation have been critical in developing aviation as the world's safest and most efficient form of transportation, and we will continue to lead with a safe, innovative and responsible approach to new mobility solutions."
Powered by an electric propulsion system, the PAV prototype is designed for fully autonomous flight from takeoff to landing, with a range of up to 50 miles (80.47 kilometers). Measuring 30 feet (9.14 meters) long and 28 feet (8.53 meters) wide, its advanced airframe integrates the propulsion and wing systems to achieve efficient hover and forward flight.
"This is what revolution looks like, and it's because of autonomy," said John Langford, president and chief executive officer of Aurora Flight Sciences. "Certifiable autonomy is going to make quiet, clean and safe urban air mobility possible."
The test flight represents the latest milestone for Boeing NeXt. The division works with regulatory agencies and industry partners to lead the responsible introduction of a new mobility ecosystem and ensure a future where autonomous and piloted air vehicles safely coexist. In addition to the PAV, the Boeing NeXt portfolio includes an unmanned fully electric cargo air vehicle (CAV) designed to transport up to 500 pounds (226.80 kilograms) and other urban, regional and global mobility platforms. The CAV completed its first indoor flight last year and will transition to outdoor flight testing in 2019.

Leonardo is pleased to announce it has been awarded a contract by the UK Ministry of Defence to provide the Apache AH Mk.1 Attack Helicopter fleet with comprehensive support and maintenance services. The Apache Integrated Operational Support (IOS) contract is valued at approximately £293 million (approximately €325 million) and will continue to support the Apache AH Mk.1 Attack Helicopter fleet from 1st April 2019 until the aircraft goes out of service in 2024.
During a visit to Leonardo Helicopters’ facility in Yeovil today Defence Minister Stuart Andrew said “The Apache has provided years of crucial battlefield support to UK and coalition troops in operations in Libya and Afghanistan. This multi-million-pound contract will ensure our Armed Forces continue to benefit from this vital capability as we integrate the latest Apache model into service in 2022.”

Under the contract Apache IOS prime contractor Leonardo, through the involvement of its Helicopter and Electronics divisions, will continue to be supported by its industrial partners Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Longbow International to deliver complete spares provisioning, engineering, depth maintenance, repair & overhaul and technical support services for the UK MoD’s fleet of Apache AH Mk.1 helicopters. At Wattisham Airfield, the British Army’s main Apache AH Mk.1 operating base, Leonardo will continue to manage the Depth Support Unit and the associated workshops, ensuring the throughput of the facility matches the operational requirements of the Army Air Corps. At Army Aviation Centre Middle Wallop, Leonardo will continue to be responsible for the provision of Apache aircraft on the flight line at the School of Army Aviation, delivering the required number of flight hours to match the Army’s training requirements.
The Apache IOS programme office, manned by industry and Ministry of Defence staff, located at Leonardo’s Yeovil facility, will continue to manage the IOS contract. The Apache IOS contract will deliver the required levels of aircraft availability whilst reducing through life costs. Leonardo also provides support and training services for the UK MoD’s AW159 Wildcat helicopter fleet under the Wildcat Integrated Support and Training (WIST) contract and for the AW101 Merlins under the Integrated Merlin Operational Support (IMOS) contract.

BAE Systems Expands National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Mission Support and Establishes New Tech Council to “Map” Agency Innovation.
The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) has awarded BAE Systems a five-year, $250 million contract to continue providing Full-Motion Video (FMV) advanced analytic services, training, and intelligence production support.
“Our experts play a critical role in analyzing multiple FMV feeds to produce actionable intelligence in support of a 24/7 national security mission,” said Peder Jungck, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems’ Intelligence Solutions business.
In addition to providing analytic mission support, BAE Systems will stand up a new Performance Innovation Council to introduce NGA leaders to new FMV services, software, systems, platforms, and sensors developed by BAE Systems and its program team, made up of several industry leading intelligence and technology companies. The creation of this new council directly aligns with NGA’s Team GEOINT initiative, which encourages industry, academia, professional organizations, and foreign allies to work together and support common technical standards that will enhance intelligence sharing and collaboration.

En diciembre de 2018, Sosteniendo "Technodinamika" Corporación Estatal Rostec completó las pruebas de calificación de las unidades de protección contra incendios y sistemas de oxígeno, que se utilizarán en aviones SSJ-100 y MC-21.

The Ministry of Defence of Ivory Coast has signed a firm order for one C295 medium transport aircraft.
The aircraft, in transport configuration, will enhance the capabilities of the Ivory Coast Air Force with its proven record of excellent performance in hot and harsh conditions, and affordable maintenance and operational costs.
Bernhard Brenner, Airbus Defence and Space Head of Marketing & Sales, said: “The C295 has proven its outstanding capabilities in the exceptionally harsh sub-Saharan Africa operating environment. With this new order Ivory Coast becomes the 28th nation worldwide to operate the C295. Airbus Defence and Space has to date sold 91 aircraft to 17 countries in Africa. Airbus launches quantum computing challenge to transform the aircraft lifecycle

Airbus has launched a global competition in quantum computing, inviting experts to propose and develop solutions, for complex optimisation and modelisation across the full aircraft life-cycle, using newly available computing capabilities.
The Airbus Quantum Computing Challenge (AQCC) aims to take science out of the lab and into industry, by applying newly-available computing capabilities to real-life industrial cases.
With traditional computers approaching their limits, the quantum computer promises to deliver a new level of computational power. As an active user of High Performance Computing (HPC), Airbus is already extending current capacity by integrating and leveraging quantum technologies in fields such as route optimisation and satellite imagery.
Through the challenge Airbus is looking to further explore solutions that quantum technologies can bring through the sharing of in-house and external knowledge, data and expertise. Five distinct challenges have been identified in the flight physics domain that have an impact on all aspects of Airbus’ business, from design and operations, to airline revenue streams. With varying degrees of complexity, the statements range from the simple optimisation of aircraft climb to the more complex optimisation of wing-box design.
Open to post-graduate students, PhDs, academics, researchers, start-ups and professionals in the field of quantum computing, individuals or teams will compete for hardware access and for the opportunity to mature their ideas for industrialisation, working collaboratively with Airbus industry experts. The AQCC will run throughout 2019.

El día 27 de Abril de 2019, Bollullos de la Mitación celebrará en el Aeródromo de La Juliana su III Jornada Aérea del Aljarafe.
Esta iniciativa, llevada a cabo por el Área de Desarrollo Local del Ayuntamiento de Bollullos de la Mitación conjuntamente con el Aeródromo de La Juliana, contará con la participación de multitud de empresas del sector.
Esta iniciativa contribuirá de forma importante al impulso del sector del turismo en la provincia, que cuenta cada vez más con multitud de empresas.
La III Jornada Aérea del Aljarafe nace con el objetivo de poner en valor las instalaciones de nuestro Aeródromo, lo que supone una fuente de riqueza y un motor de desarrollo, no solamente para el municipio, sino para los municipios vecinos y para toda la comarca del Aljarafe.
Estas instalaciones reciben miles de visitantes cada año de distintos países, sobre todo del centro de Europa. Además, en Andalucía no existe otro Aeródromo con estas características, que atrae a mucho turismo extranjero y supone una gran fuente de ingresos.
Quienes gustan de los deportes en la naturaleza saben que Bollullos de la Mitación es un referente fundamental en la provincia de Sevilla. Lo que es posible que no sepan muchos vecinos del Aljarafe, es que Bollullos cuenta en su municipio con un aeródromo en el que se dan cita durante todo el año personas llegadas de toda Europa con el objetivo de disfrutar de un espacio aéreo con unas condiciones únicas para la práctica del paracaidismo o el vuelo acrobático. El Aeródromo de La Juliana se encuentra en una zona próxima a la Ermita de Cuatrovitas, y en sus inicios, sólo funcionaban una escuela de ultraligero y posteriormente se fueron incorporando escuelas de pilotaje y el centro de paracaidismo.
En la III Jornada Aérea del Aljarafe, que se desarrollará al aire libre, los visitantes podrán disfrutar a pie de pista de exhibiciones tales como saltos en paracaídas, despegue y aterrizaje de aviones y ultraligeros, vuelo de drones, una exposición de aeronaves y multitud de actividades relacionadas con el sector. Contará con una zona de stand de empresas especializadas del sector aéreo. También podrán participar en talleres de iniciación a la aviación, la navegación, la interpretación de mapas o el uso de drones. Están programadas, entre otras, actividades tales como un concurso fotográfico con «bautismo aéreo» para la persona ganadora, visitas guiadas a las instalaciones, preparación y doblado de paracaídas o la proyección de audiovisuales, etc.

Construction begins on Airbus’ U.S. A220 Manufacturing Facility

Airbus’ manufacturing growth in the United States advanced another step today in Mobile, Alabama, as construction of the company’s A220 Manufacturing Facility officially launched with a groundbreaking ceremony. The assembly line will satisfy the strong and growing U.S. demand for the A220 aircraft, the newest offering in Airbus’ commercial aircraft product line.
Tom Enders, CEO of Airbus, and Guillaume Faury, President Airbus Commercial Aircraft led the celebration and welcomed approximately 700 attendees including Airbus and other industry executives, Airbus manufacturing employees, state and national dignitaries, and local community leaders.
The new assembly line, which is the company’s second U.S.-based commercial aircraft production facility, will be located at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley adjacent to the A320 Family production line and will facilitate assembly of A220-100 and A220-300 aircraft for U.S. customers. Aircraft production is planned to begin in Q3 2019; with first delivery of a Mobile-assembled A220 aircraft scheduled for 2020. The new A220 production facilities will be complete by next year.
Airbus has strong and longstanding ties to the United States, with Airbus aircraft being operated by the largest airlines in America. Additionally, Airbus is a major partner of U.S. aerospace companies and workers. In the last three years, Airbus spent $48 billion in the United States with hundreds of U.S. suppliers in more than 40 states, translating into Airbus support of more than 275,000 American jobs. Among its facilities in the U.S. Airbus has: engineering centers in Kansas and Alabama; a major training facility in Florida and soon one in Colorado; materials support and headquarters in Virginia; an A320 Family assembly line delivering aircraft in Alabama; an innovative think tank (A3) in California; a drone data analysis business (Airbus Aerial) in Atlanta, Georgia; helicopter manufacturing and assembly facilities in Texas and Mississippi; and a satellite manufacturing facility (OneWeb) in Florida.
The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market; it delivers unbeatable fuel efficiency and true widebody comfort in a single-aisle aircraft. The A220 brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines to offer at least 20 percent lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. With a range of up to 3,200 nm (5920 km), the A220 offers the performance of larger single-aisle aircraft.
With an order book of more than 500 aircraft to date, the A220 has all the credentials to win the lion’s share of the 100- to 150-seat aircraft market estimated to represent at least 7,000 aircraft over the next 20 years.
SMBC Aviation Capital orders 65 A320neo Family aircraft

Leading aircraft lessor SMBC Aviation Capital has boosted its total order book for the A320neo Family to 181 aircraft after signing a firm order for an additional 65 A320neo Family aircraft (15 A321neo and 50 A320neo). The order was finalised in 2018 and included in the year-end order figures.
In addition the agreement includes an upsizing of 15 A320neo from a pre-existing order to 15 of the largest member of the single aisle, the A321neos, taking SMBC Aviation Capital’s total for the type to 30. With its unbeatable seat mile cost, longer range and wider cabin, the A321neo offers airlines the flexibility to expand their networks using wide-body cabin products on new longer haul routes which were not previously possible with a single aisle.
“Demand for the latest technology aircraft has been strong both from our existing and new customers hence our decision today to proceed with this order. In the current environment, airlines are seeking more fuel efficient aircraft. The make-up of our order book positions us very well for the future to deliver on those needs. The order for 65 is in addition to an earlier agreement for six A320neo made in March, bringing the total number of A320neo Family ordered in 2018 to 71.

The A320neo Family incorporates the very latest technologies including new generation engines, Sharklets and cabin efficiency enablers, which together deliver 20 percent fuel savings by 2020. With more than 6,500 orders received from over 100 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured some 60 percent share of the market.

Contract adds support for U.S. Navy CMV-22B variant to existing U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marine Corps customers
Contract expands and advances work that Bell Boeing has performed since 2008
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 18, 2019 – The Bell Boeing Joint Program Office has been awarded an estimated $143,863,184 firm-fixed-price requirements contract for performance-based logistics and engineering support for the V-22 platform. This is an 11-month base contract with four one-year option periods. Locations of performance are Texas and Pennsylvania for V-22 aircraft belonging to the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marine Corps. The contracting activity is the Defense Logistics Agency Aviation, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“As one of the most in-demand assets for the U.S. military, the V-22 needs a support team that understands the technical aspects of the aircraft as well as customers’ operational needs,” said Pat Walsh, retired Admiral and Boeing vice president for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Services. “Bell Boeing is excited to bring our OEM expertise to the V-22 fleet and deliver solutions that help ensure the aircraft are ready for any mission.”
In July, Bell Boeing received a $4 billion contract that included the manufacture and delivery of 39 CMV-22B aircraft for the Navy; 14 MV-22B aircraft for the Marine Corps; and one CV-22B for the Air Force.
Under this performance-based logistics (PBL) contract, which expands on work done since 2008 and now adds support for the Navy’s CMV-22B variant, Bell Boeing will focus on improving aircraft maintainability and mission readiness for the Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps V-22 fleets. The team’s responsibilities include site activation, maintenance planning, training and trainer support, support equipment, and dedicated field personnel for all V-22 squadrons around the globe. Bell Boeing incorporates data analytics into maintenance efforts, yielding innovative approaches such as predictive and condition-based maintenance to improve aircraft availability and readiness.

La Agencia Europea busca pilotos de aviación general para formar parte de un experimento de Promoción de la Seguridad

La Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea (AESA) anima a los pilotos de aviación general españoles a participar en el experimento que va a realizar la Agencia Europea destinada a mejorar la seguridad operacional en el ámbito de la aviación general, el plazo de inscripción acaba el 25 de enero.
La Agencia Europea de Seguridad Aérea (EASA) durante la conferencia celebrada en Viena el pasado año se comprometió a crear un Portal de Promoción de la Seguridad para la Aviacion General. Una de las primeras y principales iniciativas de EASA está dirigida a los pilotos de aviación general y se orienta al estudio de la entrada de forma inadvertida en condiciones meteorológicas instrumentales (IMC) durante un vuelo realizado según reglas de vuelo visual (VFR).
El objetivo principal es ayudar a los pilotos a entender cómo evitar dichas situaciones a través de la preparación del vuelo y mejorando su conocimiento sobre meteorología, explorando así mismo que acciones puede tomar cuando esa situación se dé.
Para ello EASA va a seleccionar a 12 pilotos que tomarán parte en un experimento realizado en simulador durante el cual serán filmados volando en condiciones IMC con un escenario diseñado por instructores de vuelo y expertos en meteorología de EASA. Posteriormente se entrevistará a los pilotos para conocer sus experiencias y se repetirá la experiencia con pilotos que hayan recibido una formación previa para comparar los resultados obtenidos.
Para ello EASA ha lanzado una convocatoria dirigida a pilotos de aviación general interesados en participar en este experimento, que tendrá lugar en Alemania en marzo de 2019. La fecha límite para presentar la solicitud para participar es el 25 de enero de 2019. Los gastos de viaje de los pilotos seleccionados correrán a cargo de EASA.

Bell Unveiled Full-Scale Design of Air Taxi at CES 2019

Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, revealed the configuration and full-scale vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) air taxi vehicle today during CES 2019. The air taxi, named Bell Nexus, is powered by a hybrid-electric propulsion system and features Bell’s signature powered lift concept incorporating six tilting ducted fans that are designed to safely and efficiently redefine air travel.

Bell Nexus means the nexus of transport and technology and of comfort and convenience. Nexus captures the long-sought-after vision of quick air travel with a unique in-flight experience, keeping passengers connected to their lives and saving valuable time.
Team Nexus, consisting of Bell, Safran, EPS, Thales, Moog and Garmin, are collaborating on Bell’s VTOL aircraft and on-demand mobility solutions. Bell will lead the design, development and production of the VTOL systems. Safran will provide the hybrid propulsion and drive systems, EPS will provide the energy storage systems, Thales will provide the Flight Control Computer (FCC) hardware and software, Moog will develop the flight control actuation systems and Garmin will integrate the avionics and the vehicle management computer (VMC).
AUTONOMOUS POD TRANSPORT (APT)
Alongside the debut of Bell Nexus, Bell will feature the Autonomous Pod Transport (APT) – an exciting new venture for Bell. The APT family varies in payload capability that can serve many mission sets from medical, law enforcement, offshore missions and on-demand delivery services. Bell is expanding into a new industry to show the full spectrum of our capabilities and the real-world challenges APT will address.
FUTURE FLIGHT CONTROLS
Bell’s Future Flight Controls simulator will be a new experience for CES participants this year. Bell is actively collecting data to help shape the future flight controls of aviation. Data from these simulators will be used to determine what actions and interfaces are intuitive to the average potential operator and what prior experiences and abilities contribute to these opinions.
Urban air travel is coming closer to the masses through recent advancements in technology and software. The critical last step is designing a flight control ecosystem that allows individuals to safely and efficiently operate urban air vehicles.
Last year, Bell provided the world a glimpse into the air taxi passenger experience and now, attendees will see the full vision. From Jan. 8 to 11, CES attendees can stop by the Bell booth (LVCC, North Hall – Booth 5431) to experience a new world of transportation.
