Why airlines can't stop cramming more and more seats on their planes
[…]with labor costs rising and gas prices and airport fees steadily inching upward, the pressure is on to control expenses and keep revenue growing apace. Packing even a few more seats onto an aircraft is an efficient way to spread costs over more passengers and ideally earn a few more dollars per flight. PR:https://www.faa.gov/news/updates/?newsId=89185
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) quickly approved the first unmanned aircraft operation of its kind to help restore cellular service in Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
The Flying COW (Cell on Wings) drone, developed by AT&T, functions like a cell tower in the sky, restoring voice, data and internet service. It flies up to 200 feet above the ground, covering an area of 40 square miles, and is particularly useful in remote areas.
The Pulse Vapor 55 drone, which resembles a miniature helicopter, is fitted with LTE radios and antennas and is tethered to ground-based electronics and power systems. Because the aircraft exceeded the 55-lb. weight limit required to operate under the FAA’s small drone rule, the FAA had to issue a special exemption and an emergency certificate of authorization for AT&T to conduct its mission.
The company is using the drone as a temporary cell service solution while it rebuilds the permanent infrastructure on the island.
Workhorse Announces First Manned Flight of SureFly™ Electric Hybrid Octocopter
Press Release
CINCINNATI, Nov. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Workhorse Group Inc. (NASDAQ: WKHS), an American technology company focused on providing sustainable and cost-effective solutions to the commercial electric transportation sector, today announced it will conduct the first manned flight of its SureFly™ personal hybrid octocopter on January 8 in Las Vegas prior to the start of the 2018 CES. The date is dependent on several factors, including weather, regulatory approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and local municipalities.
"After productive conversations with the Federal Aviation Administration, we're excited to be on a path forward to experimental status for the SureFly," said Stephen Burns, CEO of Workhorse. "The response to SureFly's public displays has been enthusiastic, and while we have much work ahead of us in our march toward certification, this first test flight represents a significant milestone for the project."
SureFly, the world's first personal electric hybrid octocopter, was first unveiled at the Paris Air Show in June. It is scheduled to be statically displayed at CES in Las Vegas, January 9-12, 2018. The Workhorse CES display will be located on the Central Plaza at Booth #31, near the main entrance of the show.
SureFly re-invents the helicopter, making it safer, easier to fly and much more affordable than a conventional helicopter. Its redundant design includes four propeller arms, two fixed contra-rotating propellers on each arm, a backup lithium battery pack to drive the electric motors in the event of engine failure. In addition to the redundant design, a ballistic parachute that safely brings down the craft will be included in the final design.
SureFly's hybrid design leverages Workhorse's battery pack, management systems and controls utilized in its currently commercialized range-extended battery electric road vehicles. It features a gas combustion engine generating electricity and a parallel battery pack offering a redundant backup power source, eliminating the need for long battery charging periods between flights. Pilots who have seen the SureFly like the easy-to-pilot design, as the aircraft is piloted by joystick in a similar fashion to flying a drone. The SureFly is expected to be capable of carrying pilot and passenger or cargo up to 70 miles. After a quick refill, SureFly is ready for the next hop.
Early models will be pilot-operated. Future models will be capable of autonomous flight, with payloads of up to 400 pounds. Anticipated markets for the SureFly are precision agriculture, emergency responders, city commuters and military. The company is working toward full certification of the vehicle in late 2019. The expected price of the SureFly is approximately $200,000, and Workhorse is currently accepting pre-orders for the aircraft at www.workhorse.com.

Airlander: higher, faster and farther
Press Release
Airlander has increased its scope after embarking on its next phase of extended test flights
- Today saw Airlander 10 commence the next exciting stage of flight testing, known as Airworthiness Release 2a (AWR2a), which will see Airlander fly higher, faster, further and for longer than before.
- A number of modifications and upgrades were carried out recently, to allow for the expanded test parameters.
- We flew a confirmatory flight today prior to a more intense period of flight testing ahead of us.Late on Friday 17th November 2017, Hybrid Air Vehicles’ (HAV) highly trained test team sprang into action and Airlander was expertly guided into the sky by Chief Test Pilot Dave Burns on her sixth test flight, the first in this next stage of expanded flight tests.
“We’re thrilled to have commenced the next round of testing; our world class team have really done well and we can’t wait to showcase Airlander across the UK in coming months.” – Steve McGlennan, CEO
Airlander has now embarked upon the 2nd phase of test-flying, known as Airworthiness Release 2a (AWR2a). Having EASA, our regulator, validate the flight test data so far and agree that we are safe to fly in a wider range of conditions is an important moment in Airlander’s journey. AWR2a permits Airlander to fly higher (up to 7000 feet), faster (up to 50 knots) and further away from its airfield (up to 75 nautical miles away), but most crucially allows her to undertake display and demonstration activity.
A number of modifications were carried out in preparation for this next phase of testing; the most noticeable change is the fairing attached between the hull and the mission module, which will reduce drag at the higher speeds at which the Airlander will be travelling.
Chief Test Pilot Dave Burns was joined by Andrew Barber, as Flight Test Engineer (Andrew’s full working title is Airworthiness and Flight Safety Engineer), whilst Allistair McDicken, Interim Head of Flight Test Organisation & Lead Flight Test Engineer, looked on from the ground.
“It was a fantastic new flying experience and I am very excited about soon being able to fly on the Airlander around the UK and share some of that thrill with more of the country.” Said Andrew Barber, who was on board the Airlander for the very first time today.
