The AN−2−100 lifted a cargo weighting 3202 kg, which is the record for such class airplanes
AN−2−100 light aircraft, which is up−to−date modification of the world−known AN−2 biplane, performed a test flight at ANTONOV Company's test base. The AN−2−100 lifted a cargo weighting 3202 kg, which is the record for such class airplanes, to the altitude of 2700 m. Let's remind that the maximum payload of this biplane is 1500 kg.
The attempt to set the record was made by a crew of test pilots of ANTONOV Company captained by Sergii Tarasiuk and co−piloted by Valerii Yepanchintsev. This crew is known in particular owing to expedition to the South Pole on the AN−3 aircraft.
Report on attempt to set the record will be sent to the International Federation of Aviation Sport.
Leaders of enterprises of aircraft industry of Ukraine and United Aircraft Company took part in the event.
On August 31, 2017, the aviation society will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the AN−2 maiden flight. This world's biggest biplane became the first airplane of ANTONOV family.
The AN−2−100 is intended for passenger, cargo and mixed cargo−passenger transportations on local airlines. It can be operated autonomously at small airfields, in a wide altitude range, under good and adverse climatic and weather conditions.
The main difference between the AN−2−100 and its predecessor is in a power plant with MC−14 turboprop engine, made and produced by Motor Sich stock company (Ukraine). One of the advantages of this replacement is substitution of the aviation gasoline for aviation kerosene. Thus, the aircraft profitability rises significantly. Besides, the AN−2−100 is equipped with the AV−17 reversible propeller (instead of the AV−2). The operational empty weight of AN−2−100 is 200 kg less than that of the AN−2.
This new aircraft was named "Henrih Ongirskii" after H.H. Ongirskii (1939−2012), Deputy General Designer of the ANTONOV Company, who made a great contribution in the AN−2 and AN−3 program development.

Tacit Blue: The Creation of Stealth
PR
While never going into production, the odd-looking Tacit Blue was arguably one of the most important programs for the legacy Northrop Corporation. Over a span of three years starting in 1982, Tacit Blue proved that the company’s technological breakthroughs in low observables were real – paving the way for the successful B-2A Spirit bomber and a slew of other stealthy designs over the next 35 years.
In 1978, Northrop was asked to work on a new type of vehicle that would work as a battle management and control platform that could fly unseen near a conflict’s front lines. This Battlefield Surveillance Aircraft – Experimental (BSAX) would scan adversary ground forces to ascertain their composition and positions.Tacit Blue began with Northrop’s participation in the 1975/76 Experimental Survivable Testbed (XST) competition, which was won by Lockheed Martin and its eventual F-117A Nighthawk “Stealth Fighter.” Despite the loss, the Department of Defense and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) viewed Northrop’s low observable team as a national asset and decided it needed to be retained.
Military commanders would then be able direct air forces, artillery and tactical missiles against high-priority targets. This meant the aircraft had to carry an active radar system and fly undetected with 360 degree all-aspect, low observability near the forward edge of battle area.
Critical to this mission was a new type of radar built by Hughes Aerospace Corporation, which could direct its radar beam in different directions without physically needing to move. Because of its size, the aircraft was essentially designed around the radar by constructing a box and wrapping the low observable features around it. Thus Tacit Blue’s basic shape looked like a butter dish with wings.
Many engineering problems had to be overcome, but three in particular necessitated critical breakthroughs in low observable technology. They included being able to control the amount and intensity of radar detections; incorporating flowing curvature surfaces for improved aerodynamics and stealth, and the ability to operate against low-frequency radars.
Contrary to popular perception, stealth aircraft are not invisible to radar. But while detection cannot be eliminated, it can be redirected and minimized. Careful attention to an aircraft’s design can reduce the ability of radar detection along its aligned edges. By keeping the number of those edge detections to the fewest amount necessary, the detections are only briefly noticeable and usually don’t last long enough to track.
The third breakthrough occurred when the U.S. Air Force decided the vehicle also needed to be able to operate against low-frequency radars. Learning to defeat those additional systems proved critical in assuring battlefield survivability not only for Tacit Blue, but for all follow-on designs. The second breakthrough was in shape. Due to computer program limitations, early low observable designs featured flat-plate, faceted surfaces. Although faceted surfaces were effective enough in reducing radar return, they proved very troublesome aerodynamically. Smoothly flowing, complex curvature surfaces provided the answer. Not only were sweeping curves stealthy and more elegant looking than facets, they were much more aerodynamic.
Two curved, butterfly tails graced the aft end of the Tacit Blue prototype, resembling whale flukes. That likeness gave rise to the aircraft’s unofficial nickname of “Whale” with the people who worked on the program starting to call themselves “Whalers.”
First flight for the “Whale” took place, Feb. 5, 1982, and it was not the easiest vehicle to fly. However, the program conducted 135 test flights during the test period and successfully validated the low observable design features and radar sensor technology.
Tacit Blue did not go into service as its battlefield surveillance role was given to a standoff platform based on a commercial airline design. Using the sensor systems developed for Tacit Blue, the E-8 Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System, or Joint STARS, came to be.
For Northrop, the success of Tacit Blue provided assurance to the Air Force that the then under-development B-2 stealth bomber would work as advertised. Thirty-five years later, Tacit Blue’s influence continues to shape Northrop Grumman’s designs for stealthy aircraft well into the foreseeable future.

U.S. Air Force, Lockheed Martin Demonstrate Manned/Unmanned Teaming
PALMDALE, Calif., April 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) Skunk Works®, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School and Calspan Corporation successfully demonstrated manned/unmanned teaming to improve combat efficiency and effectiveness for the warfighter.
"This demonstration is an important milestone in AFRL's maturation of technologies needed to integrate manned and unmanned aircraft in a strike package," said Capt. Andrew Petry, AFRL autonomous flight operations engineer. "We've not only shown how an Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle can perform its mission when things go as planned, but also how it will react and adapt to unforeseen obstacles along the way."
During the flight demonstration, an experimental F-16 aircraft acted as a surrogate Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) autonomously reacting to a dynamic threat environment during an air-to-ground strike mission. The demonstration success included three key objectives:
The ability to autonomously plan and execute air-to-ground strike missions based on mission priorities and available assets
The ability to dynamically react to a changing threat environment during an air-to-ground strike mission while automatically managing contingencies for capability failures, route deviations, and loss of communication
A fully compliant USAF Open Mission Systems (OMS) software integration environment allowing rapid integration of software components developed by multiple providers
The two-week demonstration at the Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California, is the second in a series of manned/unmanned teaming exercises to prove enabling technologies.
"The Have Raider II demonstration team pushed the boundaries of autonomous technology and put a fully combat-capable F-16 in increasingly complex situations to test the system's ability to adapt to a rapidly changing operational environment," said Shawn Whitcomb, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works Loyal Wingman program manager. "This is a critical step to enabling future Loyal Wingman technology development and operational transition programs."
The first demonstration, Have Raider I, focused on advanced vehicle control. The experimental F-16 autonomously flew in formation with a lead aircraft and conducted a ground-attack mission, then automatically rejoined the lead aircraft after the mission was completed. These capabilities were linked with Lockheed Martin automatic collision avoidance systems to ensure safe, coordinated teaming between the F-16 and surrogate UCAV.
Effective manned/unmanned teaming reduces the high cognitive workload, allowing the warfighter to focus on creative and complex planning and management. Autonomous systems also have the ability to access hazardous mission environments, react more quickly, and provide persistent capabilities without fatigue.
"The OMS architecture used in Have Raider II made it possible to rapidly insert new software components into the system," said Michael Coy, AFRL computer engineer. "OMS will allow the Air Force maximum flexibility in the development and fielding of cutting edge autonomous capabilities."
Skunk Works' expertise in OMS, battle management and manned/unmanned teaming enable integrated and collaborative operations between manned and unmanned aircraft to project power in the face of an increased anti-access and area denial environment.

Today’s handover is a great testament to the programme’s success, and I firmly expect to see the fleet grow further as our partner companies continue to pursue opportunities for more orders internationally.
Filippo Bagnato, Leonardo Aircraft Division Managing Director, said:
We are very proud to deliver the 500th Eurofighter Typhoon produced to the Italian Air Force. The Eurofighter Typhoon is the largest collaborative industrial programme in Europe, it is a successful and significant contributor to the nation’s economic wellbeing, employing high-skilled workers and generating thousands of high-value manufacturing and engineering jobs. We are now fully committed to completing deliveries to the Italian Air Force, to develop the capabilities of the aircraft, and to the activities envisaged by Kuwait’s contract, while continuing to pursue a number of significant market opportunities around the world.
The first Eurofighter was delivered to the UK Royal Air Force at the end of 2003. The 100th Eurofighter was delivered to the UK Royal Air Force in September 2006. The 200th aircraft was handed over to the German Air Force in November 2009. The 300th aircraft was delivered to the Spanish Air Force in October 2011, and the 400th to the German Air Force in December 2013.
The aircraft has demonstrated, and continues to demonstrate, high reliability across the globe in all climates. It has been deployed on multiple occasions on Baltic Air Policing duties with the Spanish, German, Italian and UK air forces and has been combat proven during operations in Libya, Iraq and Syria.
Through a series of continual enhancement steps, new capabilities are being added to the aircraft, with test and integration activity currently underway for advanced beyond visual range air-to-air missile Meteor, the precision guided cruise missile Storm Shadow and the precision attack missile Brimstone. The integration of these weapon systems will ensure Eurofighter Typhoon maintains its position as the most capable, agile and reliable swing-role fighter available on the international market today.

First large sections road convoy reaches final assembly hangar in Toulouse
12 APRIL 2017 PRESS RELEASE
Toulouse, 12 April 2017 – The first large sections of Airbus’ next generation new transport aircraft, the BelugaXL, have arrived at the aircraft Final Assembly facility (L34) in Toulouse.
Following a five night long road convoy from Aernnova’s factory in Berantevilla, north eastern Spain, the panels (two laterals, one central) are required to complete the rear section of the BelugaXL.
Together with further work packages built by various other partners, the sections will eventually form the first BelugaXL. The design concept of the aircraft is similar to the current Beluga with the cargo bay structure, the aircraft’s rear-end and tail being some of the sections newly developed.
The BelugaXL was launched in November 2014 to address the transport and ramp-up capacity requirements for Airbus beyond 2019. The new oversize air transporters are based on the A330-200 Freighter, with a large re-use of existing components and equipment. The first of five BelugaXLs will fly mid-2018 and enter into service in 2019.

Embraer Receives Customers to Celebrate 20 Years of the ERJ 145 Jet Operations
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – April 11, 2017 – As part of the celebrations for the 20 years of commercial operation of the 50-seat ERJ 145 jet, Embraer receives, as of today, almost 30 operators of the jet family for the two-day Embraer Operators Conference (EOC), in Rio de Janeiro. The first commercial flight of the ERJ 145 occurred on April 6, 1997, with U.S. airline Continental Express.
“The ERJ 145 marked Embraer’s commercial renaissance, paving the way for the development of new programs, such as the E-Jets, which moved the Company into the lead of the commercial jet market for up to 130-seat aircraft,” said Paulo Cesar de Souza e Silva, Embraer President & CEO. “Personally, I have a great affection for the program, which brought me to Embraer. I participated in practically all the jet's sales campaigns as Vice President of Customer Financing.”
The ERJ 145 family of jets consists of the ERJ 145 (50 seats), the ERJ 135 (37 seats), the ERJ 140 (44 seats) and the ERJ 145 XR (long-range 145 version). Since its entry into operation, the ERJ 145 family has accumulated more than 27 million flight hours and almost 730 million passengers transported, being used by more than 120 operators.
Over the last seven years, the ERJ's global customer base has almost doubled, from 39 operators, in 2010, to 70, today. During the same period, the application and use of ERJ models has been growing in emerging markets, such as Africa, where the ERJ fleet has increased from 16 units in 2010 to almost 60 jets in 2017.
Robust and with excellent operating history, the ERJ platform is a success in commercial aviation, with almost 900 units delivered, having applications in the business aviation market, with the Legacy 600 and Legacy 650 jets, as well as in defense, such as the AEW&C, Multi-Intel and maritime patrol for the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) segment.
In total, more than 1,200 aircraft based on the ERJ 145 platform have already been delivered worldwide, making the ERJ program one of the most successful in the aircraft industry
