Electric vehicles, powered by renewable energy sources, are hitting the roads in greater numbers every year, but the transition away from gas guzzlers is going to take a while. In the meantime, scientists are working on ways to clean up existing fossil fuels, and a new refining process developed at Caltech uses a potassium catalyst to reduce the amount of sulfur in gasoline and diesel to a fraction of their current levels.

Lockheed-Martin's Press Release: NASA Wind Tunnel Tests Lockheed Martin’s X-Plane Design for a Quieter Supersonic Jet

PALMDALE, California, Feb. 24, 2017 – Supersonic passenger airplanes are another step closer to reality as NASA and Lockheed Martin begin the first high-speed wind tunnel tests for the Quiet Supersonic Technology (QueSST) X-plane preliminary design at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland.

The agency is testing a nine percent scale model of Lockheed Martin’s X-plane design in Glenn’s 8’ x 6’ Supersonic Wind Tunnel. During the next eight weeks, engineers will expose the model to wind speeds ranging from approximately 150 to 950 mph (Mach 0.3 to Mach 1.6) to understand the aerodynamics of the X-plane design as well as aspects of the propulsion system. NASA expects the QueSST X-plane to pave the way for supersonic flight over land in the not too distant future.

“We’ll be measuring the lift, drag and side forces on the model at different angles to verify that it performs as expected,” said aerospace engineer Ray Castner, who leads propulsion testing for NASA’s QueSST effort. “We also want make sure the air flows smoothly into the engine under all operating conditions.”

The Glenn wind tunnel is uniquely suited for the test because of its size and ability to create a wide range of wind speeds.

“We need to see how the design performs from just after takeoff, up to cruising at supersonic speed, back to the start of the landing approach,” said David Stark, the facility manager. “The 8’ x 6’ supersonic wind tunnel allows us to test that sweet spot range of speeds all in one wind tunnel.”

Recent research has shown it is possible for a supersonic airplane to be shaped in such a way that the shock waves it forms when flying faster than the speed of sound can generate a sound at ground level so quiet it will hardly will be noticed by the public, if at all.

“Our unique aircraft design is shaped to separate the shocks and expansions associated with supersonic flight, dramatically reducing the aircraft’s loudness,” said Peter Iosifidis, QueSST program manager at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works. “Our design reduces the airplane’s noise signature to more of a ‘heartbeat’ instead of the traditional sonic boom that’s associated with current supersonic aircraft in flight today.”

According to Dave Richwine, NASA’s QueSST preliminary design project manager, “This test is an important step along the path to the development of an X-plane that will be a key capability for the collection of community response data required to change the rules for supersonic overland flight.”

NASA awarded Lockheed Martin a contract in February 2016 for the preliminary design of a supersonic X-plane flight demonstrator. This design phase has matured the details of the aircraft shape, performance and flight systems. Wind tunnel testing and analysis is expected to continue until mid-2017. Assuming funding is approved, the agency expects to compete and award another contract for the final design, fabrication, and testing of the low-boom flight demonstration aircraft.

The QueSST design is one of a series of X-planes envisioned in NASA's New Aviation Horizons (NAH) initiative, which aims to reduce fuel use, emissions and noise through innovations in aircraft design that depart from the conventional tube-and-wing aircraft shape. The design and build phases for the NAH aircraft will be staggered over several years with the low boom flight demonstrator starting its flight campaign around 2020, with other NAH X-planes following in subsequent years, depending on funding.

India chooses Tecnam

Tecnam announced today that they have delivered two Tecnam P2006T Twins and one Tecnam P2010 aeroplanes to customers in India.

In a tender floated by the Punjab State Government, Tecnam succeeded against stiff competition from other GA manufacturers in initially securing an order for one Tecnam P2006T Twin. The twin will be delivered to the Punjab Government owned Patialia Aviation Club.

The first has been assigned to the Punjab based Government owned and operated, Patialia Aviation Club and the second to Wings Aviation of Hyderabad, one of India’s most respected Flight Training Schools.

As part of the in-service introduction process, Tecnam India recently organised a Part 147 training course for the Tecnam P2006T in Hyderabad, which was attended by 8 DCGA officials and 22 Aircraft Maintenance Engineers. This was fully funded by Tecnam India, a first in Indian GA history that free training has been provided for many engineers.

Mr Y Prakhakar Reddy’, GM, Wings Aviation said. “The choice of Tecnam P2006T multi engine aircraft was not a matter of debate for us, as we were already operating the P68, Tecnam P2006T was for us clearly s better choice both in terms of acquisition and operating cost. We wanted the first mover advantage by being the first customer of Tecnam in India. We received outstanding support from the Indian Dealer M/S CITRUS AIR “

Paolo Pascale, MD Tecnam commented “We are very proud to have commenced deliveries of Tecnam aeroplanes to India. There is no doubt that India GA will grow significantly in India and we are delighted to fulfil our potential in supporting future India based owners and operators.”

Tecnam India has also secured an order for the Government of Karnataka owned Government Flying Training School, Jakkur for a Tecnam P2010. The P2010 stood as the clear winner in both the technical and commercial bid against Cessna’s 172S.

A320: 30 years young…and still going strong!

22 FEBRUARY 2017 FEATURE STORY

When the no. 1 A320 performed its maiden flight 30 years ago today, few could have predicted how this single-aisle jetliner would transform the air transport industry – and Airbus itself.

The A320’s initial liftoff, performed from France’s Toulouse-Blagnac Airport adjacent to Airbus headquarters, opened new standards with the revolutionary use of digital computerised fly-by-wire controls on a civil airliner, and the introduction of a wider fuselage cross-section that enabled airlines to offer passengers more spacious seats and a wider aisle.

Three decades later, the A320 product line continues as the world's best-selling single-aisle aircraft family – with total orders for more than 13,000 and a production rate that results in one jetliner coming off an Airbus final assembly line every seven hours.

The numbers logged by the no. 1 A320 during its lifetime as a testbed aircraft were equally impressive. This milestone jetliner was flown by 110 different Airbus test pilots, accompanied by 20 test flight engineers and 70 flight test engineers; with its tasks including the in-flight evaluations of 29 different jet engines, as well as the development and certification of many Airbus systems.

Prior to its retirement in 2016, the no. 1 A320 became “Flight Lab 1,” utilised for tests in support of the European Union-sponsored Clean Sky research initiative and the SESAR Single European Sky research programme.

The A320’s first flight on 22 February, 1987 lasted 3 hours, 23 minutes. Today, an A320 Family jetliner takes off or lands somewhere in the world every two seconds – with more than 7,400 aircraft delivered by Airbus and over 11.5 billion passengers carried.

Presentation by Bob Lange, Airbus Head of Market and Product Strategy, at the ITB Congress on Friday 10th March at 15.45 in the “Auditorium London” (Convention Hall 7.1b).

Customers today increasingly expect to design their own experiences. On March 9th in Berlin, Airbus will announce an exciting initiative to support airlines in differentiating their product offering based on aircraft type.

Also at ITB, Airbus will demonstrate iflyA380.com, the world’s first flight booking assistant to propose the A380 as criteria for passengers when selecting their trip. The new iflyA380.com website enables users to browse and search all flights, destinations and airlines offering A380 services. Once the desired A380 flight has been chosen, customers are taken seamlessly to the booking website of their selected airline, at no extra cost.

Independent surveys show that 98% of A380 passengers would recommend flying on the world’s most spacious aircraft to their friends and family, and that 60% are willing to make an extra effort to fly on it.* Being the passengers’ favourite, the A380 offers accessible luxury and unparalleled comfort in all classes. Today, the A380 has been enjoyed by over 160 million passengers around the globe. Flying with the world’s leading airlines** on 110 routes and over 55 destinations, the A380 has been named Best Aircraft Type by Global Traveller magazine for two years running.

“We know how much passengers love the A380. With iflyA380.com, we empower the flying public to choose the experience they truly desire. Now, travel to the destination can be just as enjoyable as the stay itself” says Bob Lange, Airbus Head of Market and Product Strategy, “Airbus aircraft offers key differentiators for airlines, adding value to the offering, and to the passengers, enhancing their experience."

Ryanair: cheapest and most profitable airline in Europe

February 22, 2017, ©. Leeham Co: Ryanair is Europe's airline with the lowest fares. And it's the most profitable, despite growing faster than even the Middle East carriers (growth needs money).

It's time to dive deep in this locomotive. I even flew their business class before writing the report, to understand what is going on

3D printing Martian habitats from the ground up [feedly]

3D printing Martian habitats from the ground up
// Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine

Given the cost of transporting goods to Mars, the first human colonists of the Red Planet will need to pack lightly – but it's going to take a lot of equipment to get that settlement set up. Building habitats, tools and parts out of local resources on arrival would be an ideal solution, but Mars is a pretty barren place. So researchers from NASA and the University of Central Florida (UCF) are investigating how metals could be extracted from the Martian soil, refined, and used as "ink" to 3D print vital components.

In the thick Amazonian rainforest, moving goods around is tough going. Remote communities in this part of the world often rely on boats and winding river networks to get things to people in need, one of which is anti-venom in the event of a snake bite. WeRobotics, a non-profit that seeks to deploy robotics for humanitarian causes, believes there may be a better way of doing things.

Flight of the Blackbird: The how, what and why of the incredible SR-71
// Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine

Even though it was built at the height of the Cold War and hasn't flown in over 17 years, the SR-71 Blackbird still looks like it fell out of the future. The war plane with no weapons not only had the lines of a spaceship, it set the record fastest air-breathing manned aircraft in 1976 that remains unchallenged to this day. But what makes this incredible machine tick, and what was it like to fly this supersonic denizen of the edge of space? New Atlas jumps metaphorically into the cockpit to take a look.
