Airbus Helicopters delivers the first H175 in VIP version

  • New mission segment for the H175
  • Jet-like flying experience setting new standards in private and business aviation
  • This aircraft will be yacht-based and will operate in Europe

Airbus Helicopters has delivered the first VIP version of the H175, the company's new medium class twin-engine helicopter, which entered service in 2014 for offshore
transportation. Combining unparalleled elements of style and comfort with the largest cabin in its class, the VIP version of the H175 offers a superior level of cabin interior provided by Pegasus Design, who has built a worldwide reputation on business jets and super yachts.

"The first delivery of a new version of the H175 is an important milestone for our company and for the H175 program. The H175 enlarges its operational capacity to a completely new mission segment" said Guillaume Faury, President of Airbus Helicopters. "The VIP variant is also great news for the private and business aviation market as flying in a helicopter has never been so close to a private jet experience".

Delivered to an undisclosed customer who will operate it in Europe as a complement to the yacht, the H175 offers a totally personalized VVIP cabin comfortably accommodating seven passengers. The aircraft features a unique cabin layout with two distinct seating areas: a forward zone that provides a lounge atmosphere with facing club seating for four passengers and a galley, as well as sofa-style seating that comfortably accommodates three passengers at the rear.

In addition to the exclusive cabin and the refinement of materials, the VIP version of the H175 offers some distinctive elements. These include: a hinged door– which optimizes space inside the cabin – a three steps electrical footstep for ease of access, electronically dimmable windows and mood lighting. Passengers will also enjoy in-flight connectivity with satcom, in-flight entertainment system with LCD screens, moving map and images provided by the tail fin and tail skid cameras – all controllable through dedicated touchscreens or personal devices. Also contributing to the jet-like flight experience is the effective soundproof cabin which allows passengers to communicate
without headsets.

The H175 is available in a VIP version, seating six to eight passengers, and an executive version, seating nine to twelve. All versions provide a jet-like smooth ride at all speeds and a climatecontrolled cabin – even when the main rotor is stopped. Featuring more window area than walls, the rotorcraft ensures panoramic views for all passengers. It completes the upper end of Airbus Helicopters' product line for the business and private aviation sector.

Besides the private and business transport, the H175 can perform a wide array of operations, ranging from offshore transportation to different missions for the public services. Up to date, the H175 is in operation for offshore missions in the Scottish and Dutch North Sea and off the West African coast. This is the first delivery of the VIP version with a second one following later in the year. The first units of the Public Services version will reach the market in late 2017.
Airbus Helicopters offers the most extensive range of helicopters dedicated to the private and business aviation segment and is the market leader with 33% of the fleet currently in service.

Make in India’ boost: Mahindra to make parts for Airbus Helicopters AS565 MBe Panther rotorcraft

Airbus Helicopters and Mahindra Group are proposing the Panther for India's Naval Utility Helicopter programme

Airbus Helicopters has awarded a contract to Mahindra Aerostructures to make airframe parts for the AS565 MBe Panther. These parts will be produced at the Mahindra facility in Bengaluru. They will be shipped directly to the Airbus Helicopter production line in Marignane, France where they will be integrated with the rest of the airframe assembly and will form a critical part of the Panthers sold worldwide.

The contract positions Mahindra Aerostructures as the first Indian company to receive a
direct manufacturing contract from Airbus Helicopters as a Tier 1 supplier. Mahindra
Aerostructures will gradually emerge as the global single source supplier to Airbus
Helicopters for these parts. This work package is the first amongst a series of work packages which would embed Mahindra Group firmly in the Airbus Helicopters' global supply chain and bind the two companies in a long-term 'Make in India' partnership.

"We are playing an active role in the development of a helicopter-focused Indian industrial eco-system, and are embedding Indian suppliers into our global supply chain," said Fabrice Cagnat, Director - Make in India, Airbus Helicopters. "The contract will allow us to qualify Mahindra Aerostructures as a Tier 1 supplier, establish a manufacturing relationship with them on the Panther, and also lay the ground work for a rapid acceleration in terms of industrializing production in India, in case we are selected for the Naval Utility Helicopter programme," he added.

"We believe this manufacturing relationship will allow us to demonstrate the quality and
competitiveness of Mahindra Aerostructures to Airbus Helicopters. We are already
committed to become a trusted partner and supplier to the Airbus Group for airframe parts and assemblies. This contract with Airbus Helicopters signals our further commitment to work with them to develop a robust Indian ecosystem for both design and build capabilities in aerospace," said Arvind Mehra, Executive Director & CEO, Mahindra Aerospace.

As announced earlier, Airbus Helicopters and Mahindra Defence are in the process of
forming a joint venture to target India's military helicopter programmes such as the Naval Utility Helicopter, the Naval Multi-Role Helicopter and the Reconnaissance and Surveillance Helicopter. The AS565 MBe Panther is competing for the Naval Utility Helicopter programme. In case the Indian Government selects the Panther, Airbus Helicopters will establish India as a global hub for Panther production in partnership with Mahindra Defence.

Airbus Helicopters' Panther is an all-weather, multi-role light rotorcraft, designed for
operation from ship decks, offshore locations and land-based sites. It is made for a multitude of naval warfare and coast guard missions such as maritime surveillance, search and rescue, casualty evacuation, EEZ Surveillance & control counter-terrorism and Anti Surface / Antisubmarine warfare. Some 250 Panther are operated in more than 20 countries by military customers, including 100 in service with the US Coast Guard. Recently, Panther has won contracts in Indonesia and Mexico. With an unmatched state of the art 4-axis digital autopilot, high temperature performance, capability to carry 2 x torpedoes / depth charges and long range radar, the combat proven AS565 MBe Panther is the perfect candidate for the Indian Navy's Naval Utility Helicopter programme.

Airbus demonstrates aircraft inspection by drone at Farnborough

13 July 2016 Press Release

Airbus has demonstrated aircraft visual inspection using a drone at the Farnborough Airshow.

The drone, equipped with a high definition camera, performs visual inspection for the upper part of the aircraft. It is flown using an automatic flight control system supervised by a human pilot. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) follows a predetermined flight path and takes a series of pictures automatically. All these images and especially those showing any potential non-quality such as scratches, dents and painting defects, are compiled in a 3D digital model, recorded in a database and then analysed. This data helps improve traceability, prevention and reduction of damage.

The benefits of this innovative tool and process are significant. Aircraft downtime for inspection is reduced. Data acquisition by drone only takes 10 to 15 minutes, instead of 2 hours using conventional methods.

“The use of this new technology offers better working conditions including improving the safety and comfort for the quality inspectors”, says Nathalie Ducombeau, Airbus head of quality.

Operators no longer need to go up on a telescopic handler to perform the visual inspection, sometimes in poor weather conditions. In addition, picture analysis can be done anytime afterwards and in an office.

Aircraft visual inspections are an important part of the production process. It is part of the Airbus quality standards.

A full-scale industrial test is being conducted on A330 aircraft. Airbus is working on implementation on other programmes.

Bombardier CS300 Aircraft Awarded Type Certification by Transport Canada

  • Delivery of first aircraft to airBaltic is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016

Farnborough International Airshow – Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced today that its CS300 aircraft has been awarded Type Certification by Transport Canada. Delivery of the first CS300 airliner to airBaltic of Latvia is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016; the aircraft is currently in production at the C Series production facility in Mirabel, Québec.

The approval follows the CS100 aircraft Type Certification awarded by Transport Canada and validations for that aircraft model by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The CS100 aircraft will enter revenue service with Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) on July 15, 2016.

“The CS300 aircraft certification process was very straightforward because of the over 99 per cent commonality with the CS100 model,” said Robert Dewar, Vice President, C Series Aircraft Program, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “The
C Series flight test program covered more than 5,000 hours and most of the data obtained covered both models.

“We are delighted that operators will be getting C Series aircraft that have exceeded expectations, in particular on airfield performance,” Mr. Dewar added. "We can now confirm a range improvement in excess of 20 per cent out of hot-and-high airports such as Denver, Mexico City or Lhasa."

“Obtaining the CS300 Type Certification is another validation of the sustained efforts deployed by Bombardier employees and our many valued suppliers,” said François Caza, Vice President, Product Development and Chief Engineer and Head of Bombardier’s Design Approval Organization. “Their contributions have ensured that we have all-new, best-in-class aircraft that will serve operators well for many years to come.”

About C Series Aircraft
The C Series is the only aircraft optimized for the 100- to 150-seat market segment, which drives the aircraft’s phenomenal economic proposition and performance, opening up new opportunities for single-aisle aircraft operation.

Comprised of the CS100 and the larger CS300 aircraft, the C Series family represents the fusion of performance and technology. The result is aircraft that deliver unmatched performance and economics in the 100- to 150-seat market segment and an 18 per cent lower cost per passenger, making them the ideal candidates to complement larger single-aisle aircraft. Airlines can now operate routes that were previously not profitable or even possible.

Bombardier has created a new standard in cabin design and flexibility to ensure an unrivalled passenger experience. The aircraft’s larger seats, overhead bins and windows deliver a widebody feel that offers passengers unparalleled comfort in a single-aisle cabin.

The CS100 and the CS300 aircraft have over 99 per cent parts commonality as well as the same pilot type rating. The groundbreaking Pratt & Whitney PurePower® PW1500G engine, combined with the aircraft’s advanced aerodynamics, delivers reduced fuel burn, noise, and emissions – making the C Series the most community-friendly aircraft.

Derived from the An-158, the An-178 is being marketed as a military transport aircraft comparable to the C-130 and the up and coming KC-390. Powered by wo Ivchenko Progress D-436 turbofans, the An-178 is capable of carrying 18 tons, making it a lighter platform in comparison to the C-130J’s 22 tons and KC-390’s 23 tons. However, its key selling point seems to center on cost, which is apparently much lower (at around $40 million a unit) in comparison to its direct alternatives.
