Eagle patrol to battle drones over Spain's Royal Palace
After hearing about an initiative used by the Dutch police called Guard From Above, which used birds to patrol the skies against drones, Gómez bought a drone and began training his eagles.
"With the help of a couple of accredited drone pilots I started the training," he said. And the results were better than he could have hoped for. "Within about two months the birds knew how to capture the drone and put it on the ground."

Catching up on the KC-46A, KC-30A
It’s been a long, long time since I wrote about aerial refueling tankers. Having delved into this topic during the long-running saga of the USAF recapitalization effort, and the competitions between Northrop Grumman/EADS and later Airbus alone and Boeing, the topic had been beaten to death.
But as we who follow such things know, Boeing’s current effort to build the winning KC-46A for the Air Force has run into more than a few problems. These have led Boeing to be at least eight months late and write off $1.2bn pre-tax on the program.
And the problems aren’t over.

Turning up the heat on titanium alloy leads to increase in strength [feedly]
Looking deep inside titanium alloy has allowed researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to manipulate the alignment of atoms and develop the strongest titanium alloy ever made. They believe the new material could be used in the production of lighter and cheaper vehicle components, and lead to the development of other high strength alloys.
Imaging drones to spot signs of explosive chemicals leaking from landmines [feedly]
Care estimates there are some 110 million landmines buried around the world, with more than 70 people killed or injured each day by these deadly devices. Locating and disabling landmines is not only a meticulous and time-intensive task, but an incredibly dangerous one as well. Working to help keep humans out of harm's way, British scientists are developing drones with advanced imaging technology to more effectively map and speed up the clearing of affected areas.
Franky Zapata's awesome Flyboard Air redefines the concept of a hoverboard [feedly]
Franky Zapata's water-jet Flyboards have very quickly become a popular vacation experience, but the French jet ski champion has bigger goals in mind. Over the weekend, he released the first video that claims to show his new Flyboard Air in action. The Air ditches the water jet for what appears to be a jet turbine engine, and allows him to fly untethered through the sky to a maximum height of 10,000 feet and a maximum endurance of 10 minutes. It's early days yet, but we humbly propose a jet race against David Mayman and his JB-9 Jetpack.
