Simulated Martian and lunar soils sprout their first crops
// Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine
When and if colonists ever arrive on Mars, they're going to need something to eat … on a long-term, ongoing basis. That's why several research groups are looking into the feasibility of growing crops on the Red Planet. One of those teams, from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, previously tried growing food plants in simulations of both lunar and Martian soil. Although those tests proved unsuccessful, that wasn't the case the most recent time around.

Miniature fuel cell to keep drones aloft for over an hour and phones charged for a week
// Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine
Drones are being utilized in everything from parcel delivery to search and rescue, but their limited flight times are restricting their ability to travel great distances or stay for extended periods of time in the field. Simply adding more batteries, however, affects flight characteristics and reduces the load the drone can carry. To help solve this problem, researchers at the Pohang University of Science and Technology (Postech) have created a miniature fuel cell they claim not only provides enough energy to keep a drone in the sky for over an hour, but may well find applications in powering everything from smartphones to cars in the not-too-distant future.

NASA sets new launch date for Mars InSight mission
// Gizmag Emerging Technology Magazine
Following a two-year delay, NASA's Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Transport (InSight) Mars lander is back on track. Previously grounded due to a faulty seismometer, the unmanned spacecraft is now scheduled to lift off during a launch window that starts on May 5, 2018 for a landing on the Red Planet on November 26, 2018.
