A Tenessee Congressman Steve Cohen, a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, announced that he plans to offer an amendment to a bill requiring the Federal Aviation Administration to establish a minimum seat size.According to a release from Cohen, the average distance between rows of seats has dropped from 35 inches before airline deregulation in the 1970s to about 31 inches today. The average width of an airline seat has also shrunk from 18 inches to about 16 ½.

XL Airways lance une phase de tests d’un nouveau système de divertissement grâce à des lunettes de cinéma immersif. Développées spécialement pour l’aérien par la start-up française Skylights, celles-ci permettront aux passagers de vivre une expérience unique à 36 000 pieds. XL Airways est la première compagnie à tester ce type de matériel en Europe.
XL Airways continue à explorer les nouvelles solutions de divertissement à bord. Lancé en 2015 avec la société parisienne Interactive Mobility, le service de location de tablettes Samsung rencontre depuis un succès indéniable. La compagnie a d’ailleurs récemment augmenté le nombre de tablettes proposées en location en classe économique. Elles sont toujours mises à disposition gracieusement en classe Premium Galaxie.
XL Airways s’associe cette fois-ci à la start-up française Skylights pour tester un système de divertissement grâce à des lunettes. L’objectif : offrir aux passagers une expérience réellement immersive où ils pourront découvrir des films en 2D et 3D dans des conditions cinéma. Les lunettes SkyTheater ont été spécialement conçues pour une utilisation en vol, que ce soit par leur poids, leur taille, leur confort et leur autonomie.
XL Airways est la première compagnie à choisir les lunettes de Skylights et, plus largement, à tester ce système de divertissement en classe économique.
Une première phase de tests s’est déroulée sur quatre vols à destination des Antilles et de La Réunion. Les premiers retours étant particulièrement enthousiastes, une seconde phase à plus grande échelle sera organisée dans les prochaines semaines, pour une éventuelle commercialisation cette année.
« Le divertissement à bord est aujourd’hui au cœur des préoccupations des passagers », explique Laurent Magnin, PDG d’XL Airways. « Nous suivons de très près les innovations dans ce domaine et c’est pourquoi nous sommes fiers d’être les premiers à proposer les lunettes SkyTheater. Fidèles à notre ADN, nous n’optons pas pour des écrans individuels mais laissons à chacun le choix de venir avec son propre matériel, de louer une tablette, ou, demain, des lunettes immersives. »
