Metal Technology (MTI) recently completed the next stage of development on their initiative focused on 3D printing components using C-103, a Niobium based alloy containing approximately 10% Hafnium and 1% Titanium.
As part of this phase of the project, MTI used C-103 powder that they Spheroidized using a proprietary process to print their latest group of test coupons for analysis. "We were able to significantly reduce the amount of Oxygen and Hydrogen in the finished part using our latest batch of Spheroidized powder, Oxygen was reduced by 32% and Hydrogen was reduced by 75%. " said Jason Stitzel, Director Of Engineering for Metal Technology (MTI). "In addition to the improvements in Oxygen and Hydrogen content, we were also able to improve the material density by almost 5% which has been one of our biggest challenges on the project. We anticipate further improvements in density by continuing to improve the parameter set and leveraging other technologies such as hot isostatic pressing (HIP), a form of heat treatment that uses high-pressure to improve material properties" said Gary Cosmer, Chief Executive Officer for Metal Technology (MTI).
With every phase of the project, MTI has continued to move the needle toward achieving material properties consistent with the ASTMB655 specification. The end goal is to 3D print extraordinarily complex C-103 components for Space Primes such as Aerojet Rocketdyne, ATK, Boeing, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Moog, NASA, Orbital Sciences, Pratt & Whitney, Sierra Nevada Corp., SpaceX, United Launch Alliance, UTC Aerospace and others.
