Snapshot: Europe’s UAV Industry
Europe is in the midst of a UAS revolution, with business on the upswing and the European Union moving to rationalize its rules and regulations for drone operations continent-wide.
Time will tell whether the new measures help or harm but for now Europe’s commercial drone industry is taking root. According to ABI Research the combined revenue for the sector—that is the revenue from unmanned platforms; system and platform support and services; application services and enabling technologies—reached approximately $88 million in 2015. FAA looks towards risk-based approach for micro UAV ops
The US Federal Aviation Administration is exploring the introduction of new regulations for micro-unmanned aerial vehicle operations, which could potentially move away from weight classifications, similar to rules being proposed in Europe.

A menos de cincuenta días de su celebración, el Programa de Conferencias de UNVEX América 2016, organizado por la empresa española IDS, toma forma y comienza a vislumbrarse lo que serán sin duda las mejores Conferencias sobre UAV o RPAS de la región, en 2016.
El Programa estructurado en siete Sesiones incluye las temáticas que interesan a los profesionales del sector, en toda su extensión, desde las aplicaciones militares y civiles (minería, agricultura, recursos naturales, inspección y cartografía), la tecnología, la regulación y formación de operadores, hasta el modelo de negocio previsible.
Contará con representantes de las Fuerzas Armadas y de Seguridad, organismos reguladores, fabricantes, universidades y usuarios comerciales. También estarán presentes las Asociaciones de RPAS de América Latina que, el segundo día, debatirán en una mesa redonda sobre el futuro de esta tecnología, llamada a cambiar muchos hábitos.
En cuanto a procedencia, intervendrán conferencistas de Chile, Colombia, Argentina, España, Israel y Estados Unidos.

Marignane, France, – Industry stakeholders will be invited to see the world of Airbus Helicopters' from a new perspective at the Heli Expo trade show from March 1-3 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, KY. Airbus Helicopters will be highlighting its wide range of products and services with a strong lineup of five aircraft, including the H125 in law enforcement configuration; the H130 in utility configuration; the H135 and the H145 in Corporate/VIP configuration and the H215 in utility configuration.

Marignane - Ben Bridge (44) has been appointed Executive Vice President Global Business while Matthieu Louvot (41) becomes Executive Vice President Customer Support & Services, in a move aimed at consolidating Airbus Helicopters' leading position while remaining as close as possible to its customers. Both Global Business and Support & Services functions are now sitting at the company's Executive Committee. These appointments are effective 1 April 2016.
Ben Bridge, who will report to Airbus Helicopters President and CEO Guillaume Faury, joins from BAE Systems where he acted as Regional Managing Director Europe & Americas, and previously as Managing Director Middle East & Africa. He brings a 17-year experience with BAE Systems in international sales & marketing and will drive business growth for Airbus Helicopters.
Matthieu Louvot currently serves as Head of Customer Support & Services. He will now join the Executive Committee and report to Guillaume Faury.

Multiple 3D printers are used to simultaneously print various features. The printing material has diamagnetic properties. When super-cooled becomes a super-conductor.
First, a small quantity of the printing material called nugget is ejected into space. By creating magnetic fields, the nugget is held in space by levitating it. Now, further deposition of printing material can be made from any direction in space.
This technique offers many unique advantages.
1. Material can be deposited right beneath the nugget.
This is not possible in conventional 3D printers, which follow a bottoms-up printing technique.
2. Additional magnetic fields are used to rotate the nugget to any orientation. This allows fabrication of more complex features
3. Even acoustic levitation can be used to levitate nugget
4. Simultaneous use of multiple print heads increases the speed of printing objects many fold

GKN Aerospace and Durham University to create novel process to measure aircraft wing drag reduction
- Project aims to identify GKN Aerospace-developed surface technologies that reduce drag by 25%
GKN Aerospace has joined forces with Durham University to develop and implement an ultra-sensitive test method to accurately measure improvements in airframe drag performance. The test is being used to identify surface coatings that will reduce drag by 25% when compared to traditional aircraft surfaces - and when tested in typical aircraft cruise conditions. These coatings must also demonstrate the ability to maintain this level of performance over five years, which is the lifetime of an aircraft's external paint system.
This project is part of the GKN Aerospace-led future wing research programme, VIEWS, (Validation and Integration of Manufacturing Enablers for Future Wing Structures) which aims to bring promising wing design, manufacture and assembly technologies to near market readiness. The programme has received grant funding and support from the joint government and industry funding programme for aerospace R&D, delivered in partnership by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and Innovate UK.
Engineers at the GKN Aerospace facility in Luton, UK, started working with the team from Durham University's school of engineering and computing sciences in May, 2015. In November, 2015 the first tests were completed, with twenty coated surfaces assessed for their drag performance. This developmental phase now continues with the detailed assessment of a number of low drag surfaces, all treated with GKN Aerospace-developed coatings. The development phase is expected to conclude in mid-2016.
Russ Dunn, Senior Vice President, Engineering and Technology at GKN Aerospace, explains: "Smooth and clean aerodynamic surfaces reduce the drag of the aircraft as it moves through the air. In some areas of the aircraft, for example the wing leading edge, the 'laminar flow' (smooth continuous flow) of the air is typically spoiled by tiny changes in geometry and surface cleanliness. This causes the air flow to become turbulent, increasing drag which in turn increases the engine power, and hence fuel, required to travel a given distance."
Dunn continues: "Through the application of advanced low drag surface coatings we aim to improve the efficiency of our customers' aircraft, providing significant financial and environmental benefits. Working together, our team and the experts at Durham University are beginning to see early results from this research activity."
Dr David Sims-Williams, from Durham University, comments: "We are pleased to be working with the engineering team from GKN Aerospace and to help prove aircraft drag reductions, and hence demonstrate savings in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. One of the challenges for low drag surface coatings is that they need to work in the real world, on aircraft in service, over the long term. Proving sustained, consistent performance over time is an important element of this research."

Bat-flight inspires unique design for Micro Air Vehicles
Innovative membrane wings that work like artificial muscles have been successfully tested in-flight, paving the way for a new breed of unmanned Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) that have improved aerodynamic properties, can fly over long distances and are more economical to run. Inspired by bats, the wings change shape in response to the forces they experience and have no mechanical parts, making MAVs incorporating them easier to maintain.
The unique design of the wings incorporates electro-active polymers that make the wings stiffen and relax in response to an applied voltage and further enhances their performance.
By changing the voltage input, the shape of the electroactive membrane and therefore aerodynamic characteristics can be altered during flight. The proof of concept wing will eventually enable flight over much longer distances than currently possible.
The wings have been developed through a unique combination of hands-on experimental work at the University of Southampton and computational research at Imperial College London, with funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The United States Air Force, through their European Office of Aerospace Research and Development (EOARD), provided additional support.
Sometimes as small as 15cm across, MAVs are increasingly used in a wide variety of civil and military applications, such as surveying remote and dangerous areas. One emerging trend among MAV developers is to draw inspiration from the natural world to design vehicles that can achieve better flight performance and that offer similar levels of controllability to small drones but use the efficiency provided by wings to fly much further.
The Southampton-Imperial team have focused on mimicking the physiology of bats - the only type of mammal naturally capable of genuine flight. To inform and speed up the design process, the Imperial team built innovative computational models and used them to aid the construction of a test MAV incorporating the pioneering 'bat wings'.
Dr Rafael Palacios of Imperial's Department of Aeronautics, who led this aspect of the project, says: No-one has tried to simulate the in-flight behaviour of actuated bat-like wings before, so we had to go back to fundamentals, develop the mathematical models and build the multiphysics simulation software we needed from scratch. We had to make sure it could model not only the wings themselves but also the aerodynamic flows around them and the effect of the electric field generated across them.
The Southampton team incorporated some of these findings into a 0.5m-wide test vehicle, designed to skim over the sea's surface and, if necessary, land there safely. After extensive wind tunnel testing, the vehicle was put through its paces at a nearby coastal location.
Professor Bharath Ganapathisubramani of the University of Southampton's Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics Group, who has led the overall project, says: We've successfully demonstrated the fundamental feasibility of MAVs incorporating wings that respond to their environment, just like those of the bats that have fuelled our thinking. We've also shown in laboratory trials that active wings can dramatically alter the performance. The combined computational and experimental approach that characterised the project is unique in the field of bio-inspired MAV design.
The next step is to incorporate the active wings into typical MAV designs, with deployment in real-world applications potentially achievable over the next 5 years.
This is a paradigm shift in the approach to MAV design. Instead of a traditional approach of scaling down existing aircraft design methods, we constantly change the membrane shape under varying wind conditions to optimise its aerodynamic performance, says Dr Palacios, Imperial College London.

Thus far, 407 MRJ aircraft are on order and 20 will be added to its order book when Mitsubishi Aircraft signs a definitive agreement with Aerolease Aviation. The total of 427 MRJ aircraft include 233 firm orders with 170 options and 24 purchase rights.
Mitsubishi Aircraft anticipates demand of about 5,000 aircraft in the regional jet market over the next twenty years. Demand for regional aircraft is expected to increase for both airlines and leasing companies. This LOI with Aerolease enables the company to accelerate sales efforts in the regional jet market. Mitsubishi Aircraft remains firmly committed to the success of the MRJ program as well as the growth of Japan’s aviation industry.
