An UAV that can walk

The issue of how to use one robot in multiple terrains is an ongoing question in robotics research. In a paper published in Bioinspiration and Biomimetics a team from LIS, EPFL and NCCR Robotics propose a new kind of flying robot that can also walk. Called the DALER (Deployable Air-Land Exploration Robot), the robot uses adaptive morphology inspired by the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, meaning that the wings have been actuated using a foldable skeleton mechanism covered with a soft fabric such that they can be used both as wings and as legs (whegs). European Investment Bank supports Airbus Group's innovation programmes

Press Release date: 23 January 2015
 Reference: 2015-017-EN

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Airbus Group have announced the signature of a € 500 million finance contract in support of Airbus Group's innovation and R&D programmes in Europe, of which € 400 million will go to research, development and innovation (RDI) activities in France.

This new agreement brings total EIB support for Airbus Group since 2011 to € 1.3 billion.

This project aims to promote the development of innovative products in order to reduce the aviation industry's environmental impact, particularly in terms of the energy efficiency of aircraft. It will serve to offer effective solutions that will directly impact aeronautical design and production, in particular by improving aircraft aerodynamics and optimising passenger comfort and safety.

Welcoming the signing of the loan, EIB Vice-President Philippe de Fontaine Vive said: "This loan is of symbolic importance, demonstrating our priority commitment to innovation
in Europe. The development of increasingly innovative technologies is crucial for the economy and for competitiveness. It will also generate jobs for young people."

Airbus Group Chief Financial Officer Harald Wilhelm said the new agreement underlines the company's strong focus on innovation and research: "We highly appreciate this latest commitment from the EIB, which is one of Airbus Group's key financing partners. Both the EIB and Airbus Group share a common goal when it comes to increasing innovation and improving efficiency in the European aerospace industry."

This is one of the EIB's large-scale loans for financing innovation in Europe. This sector is one of the key priorities of the European Union's bank, which in 2014 alone provided nearly € 2 billion in support of projects of excellence in France.

Shrouded in Mystery, New Bomber Makes Waves

http://www.defensenews.com/story/defense/air-space/strike/2015/01/18/air-force-bomber-industry/21805275/

In late spring or early summer, the US Air Force will decide who will build its next-generation bomber. Yet, despite all the hype and public interest, the program remains shrouded in mystery.

The half a dozen analysts and experts interviewed by Defense News for this piece all agree on one thing: the LRS-B has the chance to shape American military aerospace for the next 20 years. Whichever competitor wins will reap a windfall of development money; the loser could find itself out of the military attack airframe business entirely.

Realistic simulation training to enhance safety and capabilities of helicopter search and rescue missions

Realistic simulation training to enhance safety and capabilities of  helicopter search and rescue missions

Singapore-based AS365 Dauphin simulator is the only such training device equipped with the CMA9000 system

Singapore, 21 January 2015 – The AS365 Dauphin rotorcraft full-flight simulator at Airbus

Helicopters' Singapore-based training center has been upgraded to provide highly realistic

training in both day and night search and rescue (SAR) operations, offering pilots the unique

capability to safely practice these demanding life-saving missions.

The upgrade was made by Airbus Helicopters Southeast Asia at its Seletar Aerospace Park facility,

incorporating a CMA9000 flight management system into the AS365 motion-based flight simulator,

and updating its APM 2010 4-axis autopilot with the SAR mode. It is the interface between these

two avionics units that enhances the SAR operations training.

This will enable flight crews to experience the operational environment during SAR missions while

using all capabilities of the CMA9000 system and APM 2010 autopilot – including flying with

precision navigation guidance, performing search patterns and hovering, as well as scenarios for

deploying rescue dinghies, flares and smoke markers.

The CMA9000 is a highly capable flight management system used on helicopters operated by

many emergency services providers, law enforcement organizations and government agencies.

The APM 2010 is a digital dual-duplex autopilot that reduces pilot workload for increased mission

effectiveness and enhanced situational awareness – while providing unique automatic hover

stability with very high precision.

"Airbus Helicopters' firm commitment to flight safety is underscored by our upgrade of the flight

simulator, which becomes the only system of its type in the world with this SAR mission training

capability," said Derek Sharples, the Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters Southeast Asia.

"Operators who fly Dauphin family rotorcraft, in particular the AS365 N3/N3+ civil version and the

Panther AS565 MBe military variant, will benefit greatly from this training to handle SAR, which is

one of the most challenging missions."

Sharples added that pilots qualified on other aircraft that are equipped with the same systems also

could utilize the simulator as a training device for system knowledge and familiarity.

Search and rescue training with the newly enhanced full flight simulator at Airbus Helicopters

Southeast Asia will begin in March, with the Royal Thai Police as the inaugural customer. This law

enforcement agency currently operates one AS365 N3+ Dauphin configured for SAR missions with

the CMA9000 flight management system, as well as an electrical hoist, rappelling installation,

cargo sling and search lights. A second similarly-equipped AS365 N3+ will be delivered to the

Royal Thai Police later this year.
