Desde el sindicato de tripulantes de cabina alegan a cuestiones de seguridad para defender el fin del uso de estos aparatos en dos de los momentos cruciales del vuelo. Por una parte, los tripulantes aseguran que los pasajeros se distraen con estos dispositivos mientras explican las medidas de seguridad a bordo; y por la otra critican que se pueden convertir en "proyectiles peligrosos" si salen disparados de las manos de sus dueños cuando el avión está en plena maniobra de despegue o aterrizaje.
