Investigadores de la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña han observado finalmente descargas eléctricas producidas por el movimiento de las turbinas de los aerogeneradores de los parques eólicos. Esta producción de rayos tiene lugar durante las tormentas.
Un grupo de investigación de la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña ha demostrado que existe una relación directa entre el movimiento de las turbinas de los aerogeneradores de los parques eólicos y la generación de descargas eléctricas que en determinadas condiciones atmosféricas (tormentas) pueden dar lugar a rayos.
El descubrimiento, señala la nota de prensa de la UPC, puede facilitar la prevención de averías en los parques eólicos, que generan millones de euros en pérdidas. La investigación se ha llevado a cabo con el Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Cualquier estructura elevada bajo condiciones atmosféricas propicias puede generar rayos ascendentes. Incluso los aviones son capaces de generarlos. De hecho, la altura y el movimiento son dos factores que facilitan este fenómeno. La punta de la pala de un aerogenerador se mueve a una velocidad de varias decenas de metros por segundo. Sin embargo, nadie había demostrado la relación que existe entre el movimiento de las turbinas de los aerogeneradores en los parques eólicos y la generación de descargas eléctricas.
El grupo de investigación Rayos, Electricidad Atmosférica y Alta Tensión (UPC LRG), mediante su red de detección de rayos Lightning Mapping Array en las tierras del Ebro, ha podido detectar emisiones de descargas eléctricas provenientes de aerogeneradores que se repiten periódicamente y con duraciones que van de los pocos minutos, incluso a más de una hora durante ciertas condiciones de tormenta.
