Peruvian Ministry of Defense selects the Alenia Aermacchi C-27J Spartan tactical airlifter
http://www.revistaaerea.com/2013/11/25/peruvian-ministry-of-defense-selects-the-alenia-aermacchi-c-27j-spartan-tactical-airlifter/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=peruvian-ministry-of-defense-selects-the-alenia-aermacchi-c-27j-spartan-tactical-airlifter
Alenia Aermacchi, a Finmeccanica Company, has been selected to supply the Peruvian Ministry of
Defense with 2 C-27J Spartan tactical airlifters. The contract, to be signed as soon as the
administrative procedures are completed, has a value of around 100 million euro inclusive of a
substantial logistic support package for the two aircraft.
The C-27J – known as the only true military transport aircraft of its category available on the market -
has been selected by the Fuerza Aerea del Perù due to its proven operational flexibility at competitive
costs; the best performances in its class in all operational and environmental conditions and because it
is the only aircraft in its class interoperable with heavier airlifters already in service in Peru.
"The choice by the Peruvian MoD – said the Company- is a confirmation that, when an air force has a
stringent airlift requirement in terms of performances and capabilities, the Spartan is the only solution
able to guarantee an excellent value for money. The C-27J is a clear example of the capabilities of the
Italian aeronautical industry, but this success is also the result of the intense relationship between Italy
and Peru in the defense field since 2002 and which is constantly renewed through the years".
The selection process held by the Peruvian MoD was meticulous and lasted almost 3 years. The
requirement asked for an aircraft able to operate in total safety in the most difficult conditions as those
found over the Andes. During the operational evaluation run in Peru, the C-27J demonstrated its
capability to perform a variety of missions including transport of civilians, troops, materials and
medicines, logistical re-supply, MEDEVAC, airdrop operations, search and rescue (SAR),
humanitarian assistance and operations in support of homeland security and Civil Protection, with the
capability to operate on a large number of airfields where its competitor is unable to land.

EXCLUSIVE: Boeing Goes Burgundy on the 777X – Why?
http://feedly.com/k/1g2Nx5y
There is meaning behind the color for the 777X – Image: Boeing
With all the excitement of the new Boeing 777X orders announced at the Dubai Airshow, one might have missed the fact that the aircraft is showing off a new color for the Boeing livery. Is it red? Maroon? No, it is a very rich burgundy.
To date, we have seen a rainbow of colors showing up on new Boeing aircraft and the choice of burgundy is no accident.
I had the opportunity to speak with Rob Pollack, vice president Advertising, Brand and Market Positioning with Boeing to try answer why burgundy was to become the official color for the 777X.
The composites of the new Boeing 777X are in burgundy – Image: Boeing
The choice of burgundy was not made overnight. Boeing had to complete quite a bit of research before deciding on their new color. Different colors can have different meanings, and Boeing did not want to end up insulting a particular culture or airline based on a wrong choice.
Believe it or not, there has been quite a bit of work done on seeing what feelings and words that people relate with colors. Boeing found some key thoughts connected to the color burgundy, which they wanted passengers and airline customers to associate with the plane. Those words are vigor, elegance, refinement, high-end, richness, leadership, and maturity. Think of the color as a fine wine, in literal color and embodiment.
I also cannot help but think about a key quote from Anchorman Ron Burgundy, "I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany." I think the color choice definitely stays classy.
Once it was decided to go with burgundy, then the mission was to find which shade. If you have ever been at the local hardware store to buy some house paint, you know the selection of shades can be nearly endless. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of shades in the same color family.
Boeing's marketing team tried quite a few different samples by spraying a 6″ x 12″ test panel, taking it outside to view the color, and then tweaking it to their final liking. They finally settled on the color seen on the 777X mock-ups today.
At this time, Boeing doesn't have an official name for the burgundy (did someone say, "naming contest?"). Some have already dubbed it, "Big Burgundy," but that just doesn't seem classy enough to me.
Although Boeing's official color is blue, this livery is not the first variation of their color roots. Let's take a look at the other offerings from the Boeing livery rainbow family:
ZA003 sported the updated Dreamliner livery in blue during the the Dreamliner World Tour. Image: Boeing
The first time we saw the new Boeing livery was with the first 787-8 Dreamliner ZA001. Many have felt it has been one of the best liveries every designed and it has received quite a bit of positive feedback. Although the most recently livery on ZA003 was updated a tad, most people wouldn't be able to notice.
BONUS: Photos- The Wonderful Liveries of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner
Boeing went with orange to help promote the 747-8 Intercontinental.
The second version was displayed on the 747-8I and was a mixture of reds and oranges. The new design was called the Sunrise livery and Boeing designed it as a salute to potential Asian customers. Unfortunately, the color might not end up being enough for the plane.
BONUS: A Nice Little Wrap Up to the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental's First Flight
The obvious change was the use of orange, but Boeing also put a large "8″ on the tail. This added feature was used in future Boeing liveries, including the 787-9 Dreamliner.
The Boeing 737 MAX8 in the teal Boeing livery. Image: Boeing
At first, I did not notice that the 737 MAX had a different livery than the original Dreamliner. However, after closer inspection, one can see the use of more teals and a bit into the green family on this livery. The difference is not as obvious as the bold orange or burgundy, but it is a subtle change.
BONUS: Boeing 737 MAX to get a Radical Winglet with a Boring Name
I am still not a fan of the name "MAX," but I have to say that I do like the blue-green family of colors and love this color combination.
The new 777X will offer a folding wing-tip – Image: Boeing
Then, of course, we are back to the red-family with the new 777X. I really like the burgundy and cannot wait to see what it will look like in person. Historically, Boeing has been a pretty conservative company and I get a kick out of the fact that they are being a bit creative by putting the same livery on all their new aircraft, but spicing it up with different colors.
We still have quite a bit of time before we get to see the new 777X in person, but luckily Boeing has some ways for you to connect with the aircraft today. If you want to experience the new 777X in ways not seen before, be sure to check out Boeing's interactive page on the aircraft. This gallery view is unique and was actually done locally at the Seattle Art Museum.
If that is not enough for you, also be sure to check out more mock up photos of the 777X on Boeing's NewAirplane.com site.

A major objective of the tests was to show active flow control can enhance the performance of a vertical tail enough to enable future designers to reduce the size of the structure for a whole family of airplanes. That could reduce the penalties related to the vertical tail that aircraft currently pay in drag and weight.
The testing, which began in early September and concluded Nov. 4, took place at the U.S. Air Force's Arnold Engineering Development Center's 40- by 80-foot wind tunnel at Ames in Moffett Field, CA.
"This test campaign is a key component of NASA's Environmentally Responsible Aviation Project," said project manager Fay Collier. "The maturation of technologies such as active flow control, which will benefit aviation by improving fuel efficiency, reducing emissions and noise levels, is what NASA's aeronautics research is all about. The promising results of these wind tunnel tests and the following flight demonstration in 2015 undoubtedly will have an impact on future "green" aircraft designs," said Collier.
Deal worth $2.8bn for up to 13 A330-200Fs including options
Complementing three A330-200Fs already operated by Qatar Airways.
17 NOVEMBER 2013 PRESS RELEASE
Qatar Airways has placed a firm order for five new Airbus A330-200 Freighter aircraft in an agreement signed at the Dubai Airshow 2013. These new aircraft will complement the airline's rapidly growing network, which includes more than 40 routes that have dedicated freighter services. Included in the order are eight additional A330-200F options – which would make today's deal potentially worth over $2.8bn at list prices for a total of 13 aircraft. These aircraft on order will complement three A330-200Fs Qatar Airways already operates since earlier this year.
"The A330 Family has demonstrated outstanding operational reliability and performance for both our passenger and cargo transport operations. It is with this in mind that we chose to expand our freighter fleets with more A330-200Fs," said Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways CEO. "We aim to be the best in everything we do, the air cargo market is no different, which is why we ordered the most modern and economic cargo aircraft available in its category."
Airbus President and CEO, Fabrice Brégier said, "Qatar Airways is one of our key partners in the region, and its selection of the A330-200F illuminates its ambitious plans as the airline expands and invests in new freighter aircraft. The A330-200F, with up to 70 metric tonnes of payload, is the only viable alternative to large freighters in today's fast changing market, making it an ideal choice for a constantly evolving carrier."
Another vote of confidence from a leading Middle East carrier for Airbus
17 NOVEMBER 2013 PRESS RELEASE
Etihad Airways, national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has announced a firm order for 50 A350 XWBs, 36 A320neo aircraft and one A330-200F as part of its fleet modernization strategy. The contract was signed today at the 2013 Dubai Airshow by James Hogan, Etihad Airways CEO and Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President and CEO.
The order comprises 40 A350-900s, ten A350-1000s, one A330-200F, 26 A321neo's and 10 A320neo's. Etihad currently operates a fleet of 23 A320 Family aircraft, 25 A330s and 11 A340s. The new aircraft will fit seamlessly into the airline's existing long-haul fleet delivering operational efficiencies and cost savings.
James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said, "Ten years ago this month, we celebrated our inaugural flight from Abu Dhabi using an Airbus A330.
"A decade later, we have grown into one of the world's leading airlines and the importance of Airbus to our fast-growing operations has never been stronger. We have more than 60 Airbus aircraft in our fleet today, and this latest order is testament to the continued strength of our partnership.
"As one of the first airlines set to receive the much-awaited Airbus A350-1000, we look forward to benefiting from its operational efficiencies and cost savings."
"We are delighted that Etihad Airways has consistently maintained its confidence in the full range of Airbus' modern aircraft family. This is highlighted by today's new order for the fuel-efficient A320neo Family, to the versatile A330-200F and up to the all-new, efficient A350 XWB Family," said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President and CEO. "We look forward to seeing Etihad benefit from the unbeatable economics and best-in-class comfort all our aircraft offer, ensuring the continued success of Etihad Airways as a leading airline for the years to come."
The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) is an all-new mid-size long range product line comprising three versions. The new Family, whose fuselage cross-section is optimized to accommodate Airbus' 18-inch economy seat-width for long range passenger comfort, will also bring a 25 percent step change in efficiency compared with existing aircraft in this size category. Scheduled for entry-into-service in 2014, the A350 XWB to date has already won 764 firm orders from 39 customers worldwide.
The A320neo is offered as an option for the A320 Family and incorporates new more efficient engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together will deliver up to 15 percent in fuel savings. At the end of October 2013, firm orders for the NEO stood at 2,487 from 44 customers, making it the fastest selling commercial airliner ever and underlining its market leadership position.
The A330-200F is the all-freight version of the best-selling A330 Family. It is the world's most modern mid-size freighter and can carry 70 tonnes of payload with a range capability of up to 4,000nm. To date, Airbus has won more than 1,280 orders for the various versions of the A330, with over 1,010 aircraft currently flying with more than 100 operators worldwide.
