Imagine if every time you went for on a trip, you had to carry all the fuel required to get you to your destination and back - even if that trip was to a place far, far away, like say Mars. In space there are no refueling options available (yet), and given that propellant makes up over 90 percent of the weight of a spacecraft, this issue is fundamental to saving costs and driving future space exploration. Now the Shackleton Energy Company (SEC) is looking to establish the first operational base to mine ice on the Moon that will be used to produce liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellants for distribution to spacecraft via the first gas stations in space ... and the plan is to be open for business by 2020...

SSJ100 Full Flight Simulator in Zhukovsky ready for training

November 22, 2011, Zhukovsky, Moscow Region — The new Full Flight Simulator (FFS) of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft is ready to start training for Russian pilots.

The FFS, produced by French manufacturer Thales, is a highly technologically synthetic training device replicating the SSJ100 cockpit. It has been put in place in Zhukovsky, Moscow Region, by the Training Center managed by SuperJet International, the joint venture between Alenia Aeronautica — a Finmeccanica Company — and Sukhoi Holding.

The FFS has been submitted to the applicable international standards with several functional tests and it has finally reached the approval by the Russian Aviation Authority Rosavjacia in compliance with an "interim Level C" per JAR FSTD ( EASA ).

The simulator is currently available to provide first class training. By the end of November the first Type Rating Course for Aeroflot pilots will regularly start.

The training program will include three stages. First, a theoretical ground training to illustrate all the systems of the aircraft which is conducted with the use of a Computer Based Training (CBT) and with hands on training on a simulating the man/machine interface of the cockpit called FPTD (Flight Procedure Training Device). Second, a practical training of 32 hours to make experience of conducting the aircraft and to fulfill Multi Crew Cooperation (MCC) course, with the use of the Flight Training Device (FTD).

The third stage of 48 flight hours will be performed on the advanced Full Flight Simulator.

The new SSJ100 FFS "Reality 7" is equipped with LCOS Projectors for the Visual System, Electro-Hydraulic Motion System and new IOS Station with improved ergonomics.

The innovative visual system grants to show a virtual external scenario recreating what a pilot can see during the various phases of operations in flight. In this way the pilot receives the same feedbacks he may perceive on the real aircraft. This state of the art device will allow Russian pilots to improve their skills and achieve the Type Rating training without using the real aircraft.

At a second stage, the device will be upgraded to the "level D" which is the maximum level of certification for the FFS according to JAR FSTD A regulation, with the possibility to have ZFTT programs (zero flight time training) in the future.

The courses will be managed by the instructors of SuperJet International responsabile worldwide for training of the overall SSJ100 fleet.

Thales Training & Simulation is going to deliver two additional FFS for the SSJ100 in 2012. One will be installed in Moscow and the other one in the SJI training center in Venice, where in 2012 additional training programs will engage the Interjet crews, in accordance with the first delivery's schedule. The training activity represents one of the major SuperJet International's commitments — states Carlo Logli, Chief Executive Officer — Since its incorporation SJI has recognised the strategic choice in providing Customers with a full spectrum of first class services, including technical support and training activity. This is what we are actually doing through our experienced and international aviation personnel".

"The timely and proper training of airlines' pilots is an important part of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 Program. The entry of the FFS into operation clearly helps us to work more efficiently in this field" said Vladimir Prisyazhnyuk, President of Sukhoi Civil Aircraft.

SuperJet International, which is in charge of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 sales in the Western markets, is also responsible for training and after-sales support all over the world. Given the international nature of the product, SuperJet International has established two facilities based in Venice and in Moscow for its training opportunities.

Sukhoi Company adds the third PAK FA prototype to flight tests program

November 22, 2011 Moscow — Today the first flight of the 3-rd prototype of the fifth generation aviation complex (PAK FA) took place in Sukhoi's KnAAPO aircraft plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. The plane was piloted by distinguished test pilot of the Russian Federation, the Hero of Russia Sergey Bogdan. The aircraft spent in the air a little more than an hour and landed on the factory airfield runway. The flight was successful, in full accordance with the flight plan. Stability of the aircraft test was conducted during the flight as well as evaluation of the power plant systems' performance. The aircraft proved itself well in all phases of the planned flight program. The pilot confirmed reliable operation of all systems and components.

The first flight of the PAK FA was held on January 29, 2010 in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. In early March 2011 the second flight model took off there. At present, work is underway on the full range of ground and flight tests. The first public demonstration of the fighter was held on August 17 this year at the International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2011 in Zhukovsky near Moscow. At the present time more than 100 flights have been made on the flight test program.

The PAK-FA program provides for the creation, production organization and adoption by the Russian army of the 5th generation fighter. This will enhance the combat capabilities of the Russian Air Force, will help the aviation and related industries to attain new industrial and technological level, adding new impetus to the development of scientific schools, providing a stable workload for defense industry enterprises involved in its development and production. This top priority program for the Sukhoi Company will contribute to the development and implementation of materials, element base and high technologies of high innovative potential for the aviation industry and the economy of the country as well as for development of other projects of unified aviation complexes of new generations.

Compared with previous generations of fighters, the PAK FA has several unique features, combining the functions of an attack aircraft and fighter. The aircraft is equipped with a fifth-generation avionics with integrated function of "Electronic pilot" and next-generation radar with a phased antenna array. This equipment reduces the pilot's workload and helps him concentrate on tactical objectives. The on-board equipment of the new aircraft allows the exchange of data in real time with ground control systems and other aircraft. The PAK-FA is made of composite materials with innovative technologies. Its aerodynamic design and measures to reduce the engine's visibility provide very low level of radar, optical and infrared visibility while significantly improving combat effectiveness on air and ground targets, at any time, in both visible and adverse weather conditions.

Boeing 777 Customers Benefit from 10 New Environmental Actions

  • New processes decrease jet fuel used and CO2 emitted during paint and delivery
  • Air New Zealand first to implement all 10 environmental actions

EVERETT, Wash., Nov. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Boeing (NYSE: BA) 777 program is implementing 10 initiatives that will eliminate 5.5 million pounds CO2 emitted and 300,000 gallons of jet fuel used annually during the 777 delivery process. The first customer to benefit from all 10 of the initiatives is Air New Zealand, which took delivery of a 777-300ER (extended range) jetliner Nov. 7.

"Air New Zealand is excited to participate," said Duncan Mairs, Air New Zealand's technical manager currently based in Seattle overseeing the airline's 777-300ER deliveries. "We have a wide range of environmental initiatives under way across the business. Being able to find ways to lessen the environmental impact of building an airplane is another excellent step on our journey to becoming the world's most environmentally sustainable airline," he said.
During the 20-day paint and delivery process, Boeing workers incorporated new processes including reducing the number of times potable water and hydraulic filters are changed, using chromate-free primer in the painting process, and enhancing recycling and use of electric carts instead of gas-powered vehicles. Watch a video to see the energy-saving ideas in action: http://bcove.me/gcdn6c0v.

"A team of employees identified redundancies in testing," said Jeff Klemann, vice president Everett Delivery Center. "One idea was to eliminate engine-run tests already performed by GE, the 777's engine manufacturer. This will result in a reduction of 1.4 million pounds of CO2 in 2012 as well as less community noise and emissions."

The team also improved flight planning efficiency for pre-delivery test flights. Reducing fuel loads reduces airplane weight, which improves fuel economy. By careful pre-planning flight crews also are able to reduce flight times. The flight-planning initiatives will save a total of 193,155 gallons of jet fuel annually.

The chrome-free primer used on the recently delivered Air New Zealand jet reduces the environmental impact of the paint and reduces potential health and safety risks during painting. It also eliminates the need for special handling of paint waste and clean-up, and designated off-site disposal areas. These advantages also provide benefit when the airplane is prepared for repainting.

Nine of the environmental initiatives are now implemented on all 777 airplanes delivered. Use of chrome-free primer is optional. Air New Zealand will use chrome-free primer on future 777-300ER deliveries.

A320 fitted with fuel-saving Sharklets prepares for flight-tests

Airbus has completed installation of the first set of 'Sharklet' wing-tip devices on the company's A320 development aircraft (MSN 001), preparing for the flight-test campaign in the coming weeks.

Sharklets, which have been specially designed for the Airbus A320 Family, will reduce fuel burn by up to 3.5 percent, corresponding to an annual CO2 reduction of around 700 tonnes per aircraft. This reduction is equivalent to the CO2 produced by around 200 cars annually.

These new wingtip devices are around 2.5 metres tall and will replace the aircraft's current wingtip fence. Offered as an option on new-build aircraft, as well as being standard on the A320neo Family, Sharklets will also enhance the aircraft's payload-range and take-off performance.

Continued success: Premium AEROTEC makes 5,000th delivery for A320 aircraft family

The delivery of the 5,000th fuselage shell package of an A320 aircraft marks another chapter in the Premium AEROTEC success story of deliveries for Airbus series production programmes. The complex components – one of which is the 'super shell' – have been manufactured in Nordenham for the past 25 years. Just a few weeks ago, in mid-October, Premium AEROTEC delivered the 5,000th fuselage section for the A320 family from its Augsburg plant.

Proof of continuous delivery performance in Airbus series production programmes
Parts manufactured by Premium AEROTEC for the A320 family include outer skin for section 17 and the whole of fuselage section 19
Skin package for section 17 comprises three complex fuselage shells including the 'super shell'
Premium AEROTEC recently completed the 5,000th section 19 at its Augsburg plant
The largest of these three shells manufactured in Nordenham is the one known as the 'super shell'. The component reaches its maximum dimensions for the A321 aircraft type, where the super shell is some nine metres long and nearly four metres wide (chordal dimension), with a maximum weight of around 650 kilograms. After completion of the production and assembly work in Nordenham, the shells are ready for installation – meaning that the surfaces are finished and the shells are equipped with integrated baggage and freight door frames. They are transported by road to Airbus in Hamburg for fuselage assembly.

"We intend to further strengthen and expand our position as one of the world's leading suppliers of aircraft fuselage structures. Continuous, high-quality services like those in the A320 programme are our best reference for this," says Premium AEROTEC CEO Kai Horten. "Success stories like this one are based on the competence of our employees and on our innovative power. This is the only way we can cope with the increasing production rates and the ongoing technological development that is constantly necessary."

Besides the super shell already mentioned and other large parts of the fuselage outer skin (sections 15 and 17), Premium AEROTEC is also responsible for the production and assembly of the entire section 19 at its Augsburg plant. Section 19 extends from the rear end of the passenger cabin to the beginning of the tail cone, and houses the connecting points for the horizontal and vertical tail planes. Augsburg is responsible for assembling the entire structure of section 19 and fitting its system components. Altogether, this assembly weighs some 600 kilograms, is about 3.2 metres long, and has a maximum diameter of up to 3 metres. The Premium AEROTEC workshare also includes other fuselage and wing components such as the floor beams, the inner flap tracks and their rotation journals, the keel beams and the control device for the vertical tail unit.

Premium AEROTEC generated revenues of about 1.3 billion euros in 2010. Its core business is the development and manufacturing of metal and carbon composite aerostructures and the associated equipment and production systems. The company has production plants in Augsburg, Bremen, Nordenham and Varel in Germany, and in Braşov, Romania.
