Zero Gravity Corporation Awarded Safety Approval from the FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation
The Safety Approval, granted on April 20, 2011 and in effect for five years, allows ZERO-G to offer reduced gravity parabolic flight profiles to prospective suborbital launch operators to meet the applicable components of the crew qualification and training requirements outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations (14 C.F.R. § 460.5). These regulations require crew members to complete training on how to carry out their roles on board or on the ground and to demonstrate the ability to withstand the stresses of spaceflight, which may include high acceleration or deceleration, microgravity, and vibration.
“ZERO-G is pleased to have been granted this Safety Approval issued by the FAA for suborbital spaceflight training. Parabolic flight will be an integral training system for crew and passengers in the growing suborbital market,” said Terese Brewster, president of ZERO-G.
The FAA has determined that ZERO-G has the ability to provide a flight environment capable of replicating reduced gravity levels. These profiles include 0.00 g +/- 0.05 g for 17 continuous seconds, 0.16 g +/- 0.05 g for 20 continuous seconds and 0.38 g +/- 0.05 g for 20 continuous seconds.
Dr. George Nield, Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation at the FAA, congratulated ZERO-G on receiving the Safety Approval. “The training that ZERO-G offers with its parabolic aircraft flights provides an outstanding opportunity for crewmembers to experience firsthand the reduced gravity environment that is so uniquely associated with spaceflight. By allowing crewmembers to have that experience prior to launch, it will definitely help them to be better prepared for their missions.”
“Not only does ZERO-G have the capability of preparing crew and passengers for spaceflight, the company also offers the scientific community the opportunity to reduce the risk of experiment failure prior to launch,” continued Ms. Brewster. “Parabolic flight is the critical first step in achieving space research objectives. The ZERO-G Weightless Lab increases the probability that equipment will perform to specification and experiment protocols will be successful while in space.”

CASSIDIAN to protect Canadian Naval Vessels against laser-based Attacks
- New technologies counter asymmetric threats
- Close cooperation between Cassidian and Defence Research and Development Canada at Valcartier
Cassidian, the defence and security division of EADS, will develop innovative solutions to protect ships of the Canadian Navy against new types of asymmetric threats. Under the designation LOCATES (= Laser Optical Countermeasures and Surveilllance Against Threat Environment Scenarios), the Defence Research Development Canada (DRDC), Valcartier, Québec, awarded Cassidian a contract to apply new technologies to detect and counter laser-based threats in harbors and littoral waters.
The program is the answer to increasing threats by laser designators and laser-guided weapons which are widely distributed and easy to operate. Navy ships are particularly vulnerable in a littoral environment where attacks are difficult to be detected without sufficient pre-warning time.
Therefore, LOCATES aims at the development of a detection and tracking capability together with a reliable laser countermeasure system. A prototype system shall be developed and field tested by 2013. In a close cooperation between Cassidian and DRDC, the programme will include technologies currently under development with the Canadian research and development agency.
"EADS has a longstanding relationship with Canada and especially with the Canadian Research Community," said Pierre Delestrade, President and CEO of EADS Canada. "Together with the DRDC, EADS' defence and security division Cassidian is focused on providing the Canadian Forces with the state-of-the-art technologies they will need to face future threats," he added.
"The Canadian Navy's mission is continuously evolving, and accordingly requires cutting-edge technologies to detect and protect Naval platforms from asymmetric threats," said Simon Jacques, Cassidian Head of Canadian Sales. "Cassidian is proud to further our long-term collaboration with the DRDC, and leverage our know-how and expertise, to develop future laser detection and counter innovations. Technologies developed in partnership with the DRDC-Valcartier will not only satisfy the Canadian Navy's littoral requirements, but also those of allied Navies throughout the world."
Cassidian capitalizes on a wide-ranging experience in the field of platform self-protection in the electro-optic spectrum. The company has developed laser warning devices for ships, aircraft and land vehicles which are in operation with several NATO armed forces. Its MILDS missile launch detection system, with more than 6,000 units sold, is the standard missile warner for helicopters and widebody aircraft on a global scale.

The AS350 B3 Helicopter Proves Its High-Altitude Performance with Rescue on Mt. McKinley
The AStar family of helicopters has become the platform of choice for
a variety of missions throughout the world. From law enforcement to
utility and from tour to air medical and Search and Rescue, customers
across the globe depend on the performance and reliability of their
AStars to complete their vital missions.
On Thursday, May 12, 2011, an AS350 B3 helicopter from the Denali
National Park & Preserve was performed a high-altitude rescue on Mt.
McKinley of an injured climber, who had broken his leg in a fall near
the summit. It was one of the highest rescues recorded on Mt.
McKinley.
"We would like to commend the pilot and everyone involved in this
extraordinary rescue," stated Marc Paganini, President and CEO of
American Eurocopter. "Eurocopter helicopters are designed and built to
meet and exceed the demanding missions of our customers. Rescues like
this show the commitment of our customers to doing what it takes to
complete the mission and their confidence in our aircraft."
The AS350 B3 helicopter is provided and operated by TEMSCO on an
exclusive-use contract to the National Park Service (NPS) in the
Denali National Park & Preserve and is primarily used for mountain
rescues. This rescue occurred at 19,833 ft. The summit of Mt. McKinley
is at 20,320 ft., and it is known for inclement weather conditions.
The pilot of the AS350 B3 was Andreas Hermansky, a TEMSCO employee,
and he knew that this was not going to be a routine rescue.
"With a rescue of this magnitude at this altitude, the mission is so
complex," he said. With wind gusts to 70 mph and the temperature well
below zero, confidence in the aircraft and the pilot's abilities is a
must. Hermansky explained that to be ready for a rescue at this
altitude, he had to know the area, the aircraft and its performance at
altitude with flights to summit. "Rescues up here are so much more
than just flying an AStar. I have landed on the summit a couple of
times in various conditions, so I was comfortable with the aircraft
and knew it could handle this mission."
Mt. McKinley is a popular mountain for climbers from around the globe,
and more than 1000 have registered to climb it this year alone. Joe
Reichert, Denali National Park Ranger and South District Helicopter
Manager, explained that each year they conduct evacuations from
several locations and altitudes on the mountain. "We have on average
about 20 to 25 evacuations and SAR missions each year. The AS350 B3
provides us with the high-altitude performance we need to cover Mt.
McKinley and the extreme conditions we encounter. The most recent
high-altitude rescue is a perfect example of that."
The AS350 B3 from TEMSCO also provides a variety of mission support
for the Denali National Park & Preserve, in addition to search and
rescue. "This helicopter gives us the power and flexibility we need to
perform many functions throughout the preserve including resource
management, hauling equipment, ferrying researchers to remote
locations and repeater work," continues Reichert.
This multi-role appeal is also why TEMSCO has three AS350 B3s in its
fleet. "The AS350 B3 is a true multi-role helicopter," said Joe Hicks,
Senior Vice President of TEMSCO Helicopters. "It has outstanding
external load capabilities, and its hot & high performance allows us
to haul drills for geological surveys, assist the U.S. Forest Service
with field work, conduct firefighting missions, assist with
construction, and perform SAR missions, like the one on Mt. McKinley."
TEMSCO (an acronym from the words: Timber, Exploration, Mining,
Survey, Cargo Operations) was founded in 1958 in Ketchikan, Alaska.
TEMSCO has operated AStars since 1983. It was one of the launch
customers for the AS350 B3 in the United States and helped shape the
development of the aircraft due to the wide variety of missions the
company performs. "We took delivery of the second AS350 B3 in the
U.S., and TEMSCO has really grown with the B3," added Hicks. Its
helicopter fleet has grown, as it has expanded its operations into
tourism, hospital transport, firefighting, and other growing markets.
TEMSCO will have a fourth AS350 B3 delivered at the end of May.

Airbus helps spread UN’s Green Wave around the world / Airbus ayuda a difundir el mensaje de concienciación de la Ola Verde de Naciones Unidas por todo el mundo
19 MAY 2011 PRESS RELEASE
To celebrate the United Nations International Day for Biodiversity on 22 May, Airbus, the leading aircraft manufacturer, is supporting projects across the world that are helping to raise awareness of the need to preserve the rich variety of all life on earth.
Airbus, in partnership with the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), is working to encourage young people to engage with biodiversity, through participation in The Green Wave. An initiative designed to educate young people about the crucial role that biodiversity plays in our lives and our futures, The Green Wave encourages people at 10:00am on Sunday 22 May, to celebrate biodiversity by planting a tree or through other activities and to upload pictures of this online. The idea is to create a Green Wave of action passing through time zones around the world from east to west.
Airbus President and CEO, Tom Enders, said: “Throughout history engineers have been inspired by nature, and still today it continues to help create modern solutions to improve efficient flight. Airbus commits 80% of its R&D investment into pioneering innovative solutions for greener flight and sustainable aviation, and we are proud to give our ongoing support to the CBD and The Green Wave initiative to help preserve this natural source of inspiration”.
Airbus is mobilising its global network of more than 52,500 employees in their own communities, to help celebrate The Green Wave, including a day of celebrations at the company’s Family Day taking place at its Madrid site. In China, Airbus employees will work with local children in Yunnan Province to build a school garden together and in the UK, in support of the UN’s International Year of Forests this year, Airbus employees are taking part in an activity giving mini-orchards to local schools.
In addition, Airbus is encouraging airlines from around the world to get involved in this initiative, of which a number have so far committed to support The Green Wave in 2011 in their promotional material. Carriers include: Aegean Air, AeroUnion, Amsterdam Airlines, Emirates, EVA Airways Corporation, JAT Airways, Korean Air, Olympic Air, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways International.

The Green Wave:
• Is coordinated by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The CBD is a United Nations intergovernmental treaty, whose objectives are the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of the components of biodiversity and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the CBD is administered by the United Nations Environment Programme.
• On 22 May each year (the International Day for Biodiversity), as part of The Green Wave initiative, young people are invited to plant a tree at 10:00 to celebrate biodiversity. This will create a wave of planting as the activity passes through each time zone across the world.
Participants upload photos and stories to The Green Wave website that go live in the evening at 20:10 creating a virtual wave on the internet.
• Visit http://www.greenwave.cbd.int/ to get involved.
Airbus-specific notes:
• Airbus believes that growth in air travel is a global need and that the essential social and economic benefits derived from a more connected world can deliver a greener world, if everybody plays their part.
• Airbus acknowledges the 2% that aviation contributes to global man-made CO2 emissions, but believes that it also has a responsibility to support others in tackling the remaining 98% of CO2 emissions. Deforestation alone, for example, generates 17% of man-made CO2, so Airbus is working with the CBD and using its global outreach to raise awareness of the importance of the need to preserve the variety of life on earth.

Advanced Sonic Boom Experiment Conducted For JAXA
Establishing low sonic boom design technology is one of the highest priority issues for realizing silent supersonic transport. As part of silent supersonic research, JAXA is carrying out the two phased D-SEND project to validate its low sonic boom design concept and to contribute to the deliberation of international standards for sonic booms based on the acquired data.
In the first phase called D-SEND#1, two different axisymmetric bodies were dropped from a balloon, and the sonic booms, measured both in the air and on the ground, were compared with each other. Through this test, JAXA has successfully demonstrated its low sonic boom axisymmetric design concept technology which reduced the sonic boom by half.
The data obtained from the test is valuable as a reference for the validation of the sonic boom propagation analysis method and is expected to contribute to low-sonic boom studies in the future. JAXA has also established for the first time a new method of demonstrating the low sonic boom design concept in the form of a balloon drop test.
JAXA expresses our sincere gratitude to the Swedish Space Corporation and all parties that provided assistance in this demonstration test.
*1 sonic boom
A sonic boom is a kind of impulsive sound of shockwaves, similar to thunder, generated by supersonic flight
*2 axisymmetric
Typical axisymmetric shapes include cone, cylinder, etc.

Boeing: WTO Affirms Landmark Decision That European Subsidies To Airbus Are Illegal / Airbus: WTO final ruling: Decisive victory for Europe
-- Appellate ruling concludes the WTO's review, compliance must occur within 6 months
-- Ruling sets governing standards for the global aerospace industry, ensures a fair and level playing field for all companies and workers
CHICAGO, May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The World Trade Organization's Appellate Body today confirmed that Airbus received $18 billion in illegal "launch aid" and other subsidies from European governments.
"This is a clear, final win for fair trade that will level the playing field for America's aerospace workers," said Jim McNerney, Boeing chairman, president and chief executive officer. "The WTO has concluded that launch aid and other illegal Airbus subsidies distorted the market, harmed U.S. industry and now must end. The administration—particularly the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative—and the Congress are to be commended for their long-standing efforts in this case to enforce global trade rules. We join them in calling for immediate compliance with this landmark ruling," McNerney said.
"The WTO has rendered its final verdict, and now Europe must comply within 6 months," said Boeing Executive Vice President and General Counsel J. Michael Luttig.
Altogether, the WTO confirmed that Airbus received $18 billion in illegal subsidies (principle amounts only). That includes $15 billion in launch aid, including $4 billion for the A380, without which Airbus could not have developed its fleet of airplanes. It also includes $3 billion in non-launch aid subsidies, which alone exceeds the $2.7 billion of un-remedied U.S. subsidies to Boeing (mainly NASA R&D spending) that the WTO identified in a separate ruling in March and that currently is under appeal.
"Airbus and its government sponsors have tried to justify their illegal subsidy practices by claiming that Boeing benefitted equally from government R&D contracts," Luttig said. "But the WTO in March categorically rejected that argument, dismissing 80% of the EU's claims against the United States and confirming the huge competitive advantage Airbus has as a result of massive illegal government subsidies."
Luttig stressed that Europe's obligations resulting from today's decision do not hinge on the ultimate WTO decision in the European case against the United States.
"Europe must end all practices held illegal by today's decision—particularly launch aid; government loans for the A350 and future products must be on proven commercial terms," he said.
Luttig also answered recent calls by Europe for a negotiated settlement.
"I understand why Airbus and its sponsor governments now want to negotiate. For 40 years they have relied on massive injections of launch aid, which today were confirmed to be illegal. We're not interested in a settlement that would allow a continuation of illegal launch aid—the most pernicious, market-distorting subsidy of all," he said. "Airbus currently has more than $17 billion of cash on hand. It can well afford to bring itself into compliance with the WTO ruling and thereafter develop airplanes without illegal aid from European governments."
"The WTO rules, combined with the ruling in this case, give clear guidance on what governments can and cannot do to support their respective aerospace industries. These rules will govern all market participants and help ensure that competitions are won or lost based on the merits of the respective product offerings rather than on government subsidies," he said.

Airbus:
. The appeal confirms reimbursable loan instrument is legal
. None of the loans to Airbus prohibited
. None of Airbus' loans caused material injury to Boeing
. 90 percent of US claims rejected after appeal
. Time for Boeing to accept legal defeat and end masquerade
The World Trade Organization (WTO) report released today constitutes the final blow to the Boeing-sponsored myth that government support to Airbus somehow caused harm to Boeing. The WTO has now confirmed definitively that government loans are a legal instrument and that none of the government loans made to Airbus over the past 40 years were prohibited. It also reaffirms that, contrary to Boeing's repeated assertions, the subsidies did not cause any material injury to Boeing.
"It's time for Boeing to accept this legal defeat and end the masquerade. The WTO confirmation of the European loan system is a big victory for Europe," said Rainer Ohler, Airbus' Head of Public Affairs and Communications. "We see no significant consequences for Airbus or the European support system from today's decision, as the WTO has now fully and finally rejected most of the US claims. Therefore, the WTO findings are likely to require only limited changes in European policies and practices," he added.
The WTO Appellate Body rejected all of the arguments made by the US during the appeal and sided with the EU. The final result further improves on the already substantial rejection of US claims at the first stage in 2009 and now rejects 90 percent of all US claims. It also marks the end of the road for Boeing's quest to stop European government partnership with Airbus.
In particular, the WTO Appellate Body:
- confirmed that the European reimbursable loan mechanism is a legal and compliant instrument of partnership between government and industry,
- reversed the Panel's finding that three of the past government loans were prohibited subsidies, thereby finding that none of the past loans were prohibited,
- denied US claims that the full amount of a loan is a subsidy but confirmed that government loans to Airbus contain an element of a subsidy, the size of which depends on the interest rate,
- reversed the Panel's finding that government-built infrastructure used by Airbus in France constitutes a subsidy,
- reversed the Panel's finding that European R&T programmes caused harm to Boeing,
- chastised the Panel for incorrectly finding that Boeing lost market share in Brazil, Mexico, Chinese Taipei and Singapore,
- found that there was no possibility of future harm to Boeing in India,
- significantly limited the scope of the Panel's finding that Boeing lost market share in Australia, China, Korea and the EU.
These results came as no surprise to Airbus. The company has said throughout the WTO process that it expected the majority of Boeing's claims to be rejected.
Airbus noted that a separate case before the WTO has found that Boeing has benefitted from substantial illegal subsidies. That case is currently under appeal, with a final outcome expected later this year.

Rolls Royce, Airbus, Boeing, Qantas & and AD directive for Trents 500,700,800
QF32 prompts removal of 53 Trent 900s from service
ATSB focuses on Rolls-Royce's quality control in QF32 probe
Partial power loss on Qantas A380 caused by oil leak
Airworthiness Directive:
Airworthiness Directives; Rolls-Royce plc (RR) RB211-524 Series and RB211 Trent 500, 700,
and 800 Series Turbofan Engines
AGENCY: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), DOT.
ACTION: Final rule.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
SUMMARY: We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for the products listed above. This AD results from mandatory continuing airworthiness information (MCAI) issued by an aviation authority of another country to identify and correct an unsafe condition on an aviation product. The MCAI describes the unsafe condition as:
During manufacture of a number of HP Compressor Stage 1 and 2 discs with axial
dovetail slots, anomalies at the disc post corners have been found. Fatigue crack
initiation and subsequent crack propagation at the disc post may result in release of
two blades and the disc post. This may potentially be beyond the containment
capabilities of the engine casings. Thus, these anomalies present at the disc posts
constitute a potentially unsafe condition.
We are issuing this AD to detect cracks in the high-pressure compressor (HPC) Stage 1 and 2 disc
posts, which could result in failure of the disc post and release of HPC blades, release of uncontained
engine debris, and damage to the airplane.
Boeing KC-767 Tankers for Italian Air Force Formally Enter into Service
PRATICA DI MARE, Italy, May 17, 2011 -- The first two Boeing [NYSE:
BA] KC-767 advanced aerial refueling tankers for the Italian Air Force
(ItAF) formally entered into service today during a public ceremony
near Rome.
The ItAF accepted delivery of the two KC-767A tankers on Dec. 29 and
March 10. Italian crews then flew the aircraft from Boeing's tanker
modification facility in Wichita, Kan., to the Italian air base at
Pratica di Mare.
"The configuration flexibility of the KC-767 tanker allows for
simultaneous refueling and passenger and cargo transport, with the
potential to operate in humanitarian response, disaster relief, and
emergency aeromedical evacuation of personnel," ItAF officials said.
"The KC-767 enables a unique and exceptional air projection
capability, not only for Italy, but for all of NATO."
"This is a milestone event for the Italian Air Force as well as the
members of Boeing's International Tanker team," said Scott Wuesthoff,
International Tanker program manager for Boeing. "The KC-767 tankers
will significantly increase Italy's military capability as the country
performs vital missions in support of NATO and regional interests. The
deliveries also reaffirm Boeing's standing as the world's leading
provider of aerial refueling tankers."
Boeing is building four KC-767 Tanker Transport aircraft, designed for
in-flight aerial refueling and strategic transport, to replace the
ItAF B-707T/T fleet. Since their delivery, the first two KC-767
tankers have been engaged in aerial refueling training missions with
ItAF crews in which they are successfully delivering fuel to an array
of ItAF aircraft. Boeing and the ItAF are working together to enter
the third KC-767 aircraft into the acceptance process for anticipated
delivery this summer, with a fourth tanker to follow shortly
thereafter. Upon receiving its fourth tanker, ItAF will declare Final
Operational Capability.
The Italian Air Force KC-767A is a "convertible combi," meaning it can
carry all passengers, all cargo, or a combination of passengers and
cargo. In any configuration, the KC-767 has an aerial refueling boom
with a remote aerial refueling operator station, as well as wing pod
and centerline hose and drogue systems, and a refueling receptacle.
This configuration allows for the refueling of all existing types of
aircraft, both fighters and transports.
"The Italian Air Force KC-767A can be refueled by another tanker
thanks to the refueling receptacle located on top of the aircraft near
the cockpit, a feature that increases the tanker's already enviable
operating capacity and range," ItAF officials said.
Boeing has been designing, building, modifying and supporting tankers
for decades. These include four KC-767 tankers delivered to the Japan
Air Self Defense Force, hundreds of KC-135 tankers delivered to
worldwide customers, and a fleet of large KC-10 tankers delivered to
the U.S. Air Force.
Airbus single aisle production to increase to 42 per month in Q4 2012
18 May 2011 Press Release
Airbus will increase the production rate of its popular A320 Family of eco-efficient single-aisle aircraft to 42 aircraft per month in the fourth quarter of 2012. Currently Airbus produces 36 A320 Family aircraft each month, a production rate that will steadily rise to 38 in August 2011 and to 40 in the first quarter of 2012. Currently the production rate for Airbus' long-range A330 Family is 8.5 per month, increasing to nine in early 2012 and ten in the second quarter of 2013.
"The low operating costs and high dispatch reliability offered by the A320 Family make it the best seller in its market" said Tom Williams, Executive Vice President Programmes. "With a backlog of over 2,300 A320 Family aircraft to deliver, we need to increase production to accommodate continuing strong customer demand for these new eco-efficient aircraft".
Airbus delivered a total of 510 aircraft in 2010, including 401 A320 Family aircraft. By the end of April, Airbus had already delivered 132 A320 Family aircraft and is well on track to exceed previous years' deliveries.
To keep the A320 Family in the leadership position, Airbus has recently introduced a new engine option (neo) for the A320 Family which will enter into service in October 2015. The A320neo Family incorporates new more efficient engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices which together will deliver up to 15 percent in fuel savings. This will represent some 3,600 tonnes less CO2 per aircraft, per year. In addition, the A320neo will provide a double-digit reduction in NOx emissions and reduced engine noise, thus being a good neighbour at any airport where airlines will operate the aircraft.
The A320neo will have over 95 percent airframe commonality with the existing models making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload. Engines offered on the A320neo are CFM International's LEAP-X and Pratt & Whitney's PurePower PW1100G.
The A320 Family, which includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321, is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. Each aircraft features fly by wire controls and all share a unique cockpit and operational commonality across the range. Over 7,000 Airbus A320 Family aircraft have been sold and more than 4,600 delivered to almost 330 customers and operators worldwide, making it the world's best selling commercial jetliner ever. With proven reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single aisle aircraft. Uniquely, the A320 Family offers a containerized cargo system, which is compatible with the worldwide standard wide-body system.

5 equipos de 5 continentes se disputan un premio de 30.000€
Blagnac, 17 May 2011
