Embraer suscribe un crédito sindicado por 1.000 millones de dólares con 25 bancos

El fabricante aeronáutico brasileño Embraer anunció hoy la suscripción de un crédito sindicado por un valor de 1.000 millones de dólares con 25 instituciones financieras internacionales.

"El objetivo principal del acuerdo es garantizar el acceso a recursos financieros de corto plazo a tasas prenegociadas en caso de necesidad de la empresa", señaló Embraer en un comunicado.

BAE Systems is planning to propose its single-engine Hawk trainer as the U.S. Air Force begins to move slowly toward a competition for a T-38 replacement.

The average age of the T-38 last year was 42 years, but financial pressures in the Pentagon are forcing the Air Force to push off its plans for a replacement until 2012 at the earliest.

BAE’s announcement came Sept. 8, only days before the annual Air Force Association convention next week in Washington. Likely competitors are the twin-engine Aermacchi M346 and the Lockheed Martin/KAI T-50. Boeing also has left the door open to designing a trainer for the Air Force.

Researchers create nano-architectured aluminum alloy with strength of steel

Using a technique that creates a new nanoscale architecture, researchers have created an aluminum alloy just as strong as steel but with reasonable plasticity to stretch and not break under stress. Importantly, the technique of creating these nanostructures can be used on many different types of metals and the team plans to work on strengthening magnesium, a metal that is even lighter than aluminum that could be used to make strong, lightweight body armor for soldiers.

Dr. Yuntian Zhu, a professor of materials science at North Carolina State University worked on the project to create the super strong aluminum alloy along with colleagues from the University of Sydney in Australia; the University of California, Davis; and Ufa State Aviation Technical University in Russia. He says the aluminum alloys have unique structural elements that, when combined to form a hierarchical structure at several nanoscale levels, make them super-strong and ductile.

Boeing Begins assembly of 1000th 767

EVERETT, Wash., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) has begun assembly of the 1,000th 767 airplane at the factory in Everett, Wash. Mechanics took the first step in major assembly by loading the wing spar into the assembly tool. The spar is the internal support structure that runs through the full length of the wing.

"This is an important milestone for the 767, which has continued to evolve and improve since entering service nearly 30 years ago," said Kim Pastega, vice president and general manager of the 767 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 767 is a high-performing twin-aisle airplane that delivers nearly 99 percent dispatch reliability every day for more than 90 operators around the world."

The 1,000th airplane, a 767-300ER (extended range) passenger model, is scheduled for delivery in February 2011 to long-time customer ANA (All Nippon Airways). ANA ordered its first 767 in 1979 and has taken delivery of 89 767s to date.

Boeing will use the 767 as the platform for its NewGen Tanker if it wins the U.S. Air Force KC-X Tanker competition. Contract award currently is scheduled for mid-November.

The Boeing 767 family is a family of clean, quiet, fuel-efficient airplanes that provide maximum market versatility in the 200- to 300-seat market. The Boeing 767 family includes three passenger models -- the 767-200ER, 767-300ER and 767-400ER -- and a medium-widebody freighter, which is based on the 767-300ER fuselage.

Senator wants airspace expanded for unmanned aircraft flying

Officials in North Dakota, a state with open spaces and a U.S. Air Force base at Grand Forks, are lobbying for increased airspace in which to test and fly unmanned aircraft with various electronic sensing devices. It is also a prime goal of the Dayton region, which wants to support unmanned aircraft development at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Springfield Air National Guard base.

The FAA has begun studying the issue. The agency says, however, that it must be assured that the remotely piloted aircraft will have reliable electronic systems aboard to automatically detect and avoid other planes before allowing them into airspace used by manned aircraft.

Defense, Space & Security segment in Huntsville, Ala., are developing 100-kilowatt free electron laser weapon technology as a foundation on which to develop a next-generation megawatt class free electron laser weapon for use aboard U.S. Navy surface warships under terms of a $23.7 million contract announced Tuesday.

"Según expertos de nuestro Centro, en el marco del desarrollo del proyecto complejo de aviación de combate del futuro (PAK FA, por su siglas en ruso), Rusia fabricará al menos 1.000 cazas de esa clase", dijo el director de CACMA, Igor Korotchenko.

El directivo añadió que si se mantiene la perspectiva económica favorable se prevé que sólo las Fuerzas Aéreas de Rusia encarguen, como mínimo, 400-450 de esos aparatos entre los años 2020 y 2040.
