NAVAIR plans to buy a total of 117 P-8A Poseidons through Fiscal 2018 as one-half of the plan to replace about 225 Lockheed Martin P-3C Orions. The navy also plans to buy the Northrop Grumman RQ-4N broad area maritime surveillance (BAMS), an unmanned system that will serve as an adjunct to the P-8A.

The Global Observer (GO) is flying from Edwards AFB, Calif., where it will undergo an operational utility assessment under a joint concept technology demonstration (JCTD) sponsored by several U.S. agencies and led by Special Operations Command. The initial GO-1 aircraft is designed to stay aloft for seven days at up to 65,000 ft. carrying a 400-lb. payload.

The aircraft reached almost 4,000 ft. on its Aug. 5 first flight and conducted a series of maneuvers, including climbs and turns. After battery-powered flights to expand the envelope, the Global Observer will begin using hydrogen fuel.

Satellite communications experts at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va., are taking the next step in developing broadband data communications links to orbiting satellite constellations, not only to establish persistent SATCOM  capability for fighting forces in the field, but also to enable real-time control of satellites from military theaters of operation.

The ability to control clusters of satellites from military theaters of operation like Iraq and Afghanistan not only could help establish predictable, round-the-clock satellite communications links for forward-deployed warfighters, but also has the potential to help establish controllable, persistent surveillance capability for the military commanders in the field who need it most.

DARPA awarded an $18 million research contract Friday to Inmarsat plc in London for the Persistent Broadband Ground Connectivity for Spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit program, which seeks to enable near-24/7, very-low-latency, on-demand broadband connectivity between ground satellite terminals and spacecraft in low earth orbit (LEO).

The purchase will be funded by U.S. military aid to Israel. Israel originally planned to buy 75 such planes, with an initial option of 25 aircraft. According to Israel MOD sources, the flyaway cost of these aircraft will be $96 million, but this cost reflects only the net platform price. (read more...)
