Boeing B-1 With FIDL Avionics Upgrade Completes 1st Phase of Flight Test

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Dec. 18, 2009 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] has
successfully completed the first phase of flight test for a B-1 bomber
upgraded with new digital avionics. The B-1 Fully Integrated Data Link
(FIDL) flight test plan for Phase 1 concluded Oct. 16; it included
nine sorties performed by the U.S. Air Force at Edwards Air Force
Base.

"This upgrade replaces 25-year-old avionics processing, displays and
keyboards," said Eric Vanderslice, B-1 FIDL program manager for
Boeing. "Those old systems have very limited functionality. It also
changes the configuration of the limited display space that helps the
crew perform the aircraft's mission. We are going from bulky
cathode-ray-tube screens to higher-functioning flat-panel displays,
giving crews more situational awareness and more space."

Phase 1 included observations of how the crew acclimated to the new
configuration; temperature and vibration tests on the new hardware;
and functionality tests of all the display-related software upgrades,
including the new moving maps. An 8-inch by 10-inch flat-panel display
shows a picture of the terrain below that changes as the aircraft
moves, much like a GPS system does in a car. B-1 crews will enter
their destination and flight path before departure in order for the
moving map to provide a continuously updated display of the route.

Now that Phase 1 testing is complete, the B-1 aircraft will go to
Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., for programmed depot maintenance. The
remaining software flight-test objectives (emphasizing data link
functionality) will be performed during Phase 2, which is scheduled to
begin at Edwards in April 2010 and run for 10 months. The Air Force is
expected to award a contract in November 2010 for the production of
FIDL installation kits for the service's entire B-1 fleet.

Russian Air Force Slims Down And Shapes Up

 
December 18, 2009: The Russian Air Force, like the Army, is undergoing an extensive reorganization. Very extensive. The number of units will be cut from 340 to 180. The number of aircrew (mainly pilots) will be cut 40 percent (from 12,000 to 7,000). The number of officers will be reduced by nearly half (from 65,000 to 38,000). Smaller cuts in enlisted personnel will be made, About half the current aircraft will be retired or sold, and over the next decade, 70 percent of the remaining aircraft will be replaced with new models, or upgraded.

CONVALIDACIÓN DEL TÍTULO EUROPEO DE INGENIERO (EUR. ING.)

La inscripción en el registro de la FEANI, y la designación de Eur. Ing. se solicita en España a través de la asociación de ingenieros a la que pertenezca el  interesado y que estén integradas en el Instituto de la Ingeniería de España.
Las condiciones mínimas establecidas por la Federación y que garantizan la profesionalidad de sus Eur. Ing., establecen la necesidad de una formación superior mínima de tres años, más cuatro años de experiencia. Es decir, un total de siete años de formación terciaria mínimo, entendiendo que la formación comprende tres años mínimos académicos, dos años de entrenamiento, que pueden sustituirse por formación académica y dos años de experiencia. La FEANI ha establecido también el principio de potencial de competencia, que obliga a todos los ingenieros a seguir su formación permanente a lo largo de su
vida profesional. Para solicitar la acreditación de Eur. Ing. se necesita aportar los siguientes documentos:

  1. Rellenar el formulario de la FEANI.
  2. Certificado de empresa original, donde indique la categoría como Ingeniero, así como el inicio laboral en la misma y su final, si ha lugar.
  3. Un breve currículum profesional.
  4. Fotocopia compulsada del título de Ingeniero.
  5. Dos fotografías tamaño carné.
  6. Si ha efectuado el ejercicio libre de la profesión, certificado del colegio con la realización de los trabajos efectuados.

El expediente es examinado por el Comité Español de Acreditación y, si es conforme, lo remite al European Monitoring Comitee (EMC", que es el órgano competente para decidir la inscripción. Una vez aprobado se le incluye en el Registro Oficial de la FEANI.

Una veintena de organizaciones se unen para recuperar el patrimonio aeronáutico de Guadalajara

familiares de destacados ingenieros, pilotos y científicos firmarán el
próximo viernes, 18 de diciembre, el "Manifiesto para la conservación
del patrimonio aeronáutico, arquitectónico e industrial en la ciudad
de Guadalajara". Esta iniciativa pretende llamar la atención sobre el
estado de abandono de distintos edificios ubicados en la ciudad de
Guadalajara que, desde finales del S. XIX y hasta 1936, fueron la cuna
de la aviación española y desempeñaron un papel esencial en su
evolución durante varias décadas.

El inicio de las pruebas en vuelo del nuevo 787 Dreamliner de Boeing puede marcar un punto de inflexión en el sector aeronáutico. En menos de una semana, los dos grandes fabricantes del sector han puesto en el aire los principales programas que tienen entre manos y que más quebraderos de cabeza les han dado: el 787 del grupo estadounidense, por un lado, y el A-400M de Airbus Military, por otro. No todo está hecho pero sí parece que las empresas lo tienen bastante encarrilado.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Dec. 17, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- An innovative method for joining composite structures implemented by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has passed a series of intensive structural tests, paving the way for the use of composites in future spacecraft.

"This is a major step forward for the use of composites in future missions," said Gene Fraser, vice president of Advanced Programs and Technology for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. "Our engineering and technology development efforts on this composite structure will enable future manned habitats for the Moon and beyond."

In collaboration with the NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) Composite Crew Module team, Northrop Grumman developed a unique joint design that was used to mate two segments of NASA's Composite Crew Module (CCM) demonstrator. The joint design test results proved that the mating process retains compartment pressure and withstands external loads at twice the level normally experienced in flight. In addition, the new process provides mass and cost savings due to the elimination of mate joint fasteners, more efficient subsystems installation and no requirement for an autoclave during mate. The CCM is a high fidelity technology demonstration article that represents the inner pressurized shell for the Orion crew module.

"The splice region performed exactly as our analysis predicted," said Mike Kirsch, NASA CCM program manager. "We tracked the strain across the joint and verified that the non-autoclave cured composite was fully capable of handling the pressure and vehicle loads in the crew cabin."

Conducted at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., the Northrop Grumman team also installed an advanced fiberoptic strain-sensing system on the CCM, which monitored more than 3,500 channels of data in real time during the test to monitor the splice joint's performance. Additional tests measured the CCM's performance during ultimate loads for launch, on-orbit, and abort scenarios. NASA is now proceeding with post-impact load conditions to verify the robust residual strength characteristics of the CCM habitat structure. The test program will be complete next spring.

In recognition of the company's participation in the CCM splice fabrication effort, NESC, which is leading development of the CCM, presented Northrop Grumman's engineer Dawson Vincent with a Technical Excellence Award in October.

Russia's big An-124-100 Ruslan freighter appears closer to a new lease
on life, provided promised funding and commitments are forthcoming.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recently approved a plan to restart
production of an upgraded An-124 version at the Aviastar-SP plant in
Ulyanovsk, under the responsibility of United Aircraft Corp. (UAC).
Known as the An-124-500, it would feature a glass cockpit for four
crewmembers and enhancements to the aircraft's Motor Sich D18-T
powerplant that would boost range and payload and double the
aircraft's operating life to 50,000 hr. Deliveries would begin by
2014-15.
