Royal Air Force to Acquire 7th Boeing C-17 Globemaster III

LONG BEACH, Calif., Dec. 17, 2009 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence this week announced an agreement for the acquisition of a seventh C-17 Globemaster III for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Boeing is scheduled to deliver the aircraft in December 2010.

"The RAF has an urgent need for additional airlift capability," said Robin Philip, Head of Commercial Air Support, UK Ministry of Defence. "We know firsthand the capabilities and reliability the C-17 brings to every mission, and that's why we're adding another one to our fleet."

The current UK fleet of six C-17s has logged more than 50,000 flight hours to date. The newest C-17, like the others, will operate out of RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, England, and provide critical airlift capability.

"The RAF's C-17s have served the United Kingdom well, performing superbly in aeromedical evacuations, humanitarian and disaster-relief missions, and in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Tommy Dunehew, Boeing Global Mobility Systems vice president of Business Development. "And now more help is on the way."

"We're proud to support the RAF with an aircraft that continues to set the standard for advanced airlift capability," added Liz Pace, C-17 program manager, United Kingdom and Australia. "The addition of a seventh C-17 illustrates, once again, why it remains the airlifter of choice for both U.S. and allied commanders."

As part of the worldwide C-17 fleet, the United Kingdom participates in the C-17 Globemaster III Sustainment Partnership logistics support program, which aims to increase mission readiness and reduce operations and support costs. The Boeing C-17 Field Services team located at RAF Brize Norton provides engineering, supply chain management and support, and maintenance of essential support equipment, along with configuration and data services 24 hours a day.

In addition to supporting operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the RAF's C-17s have provided humanitarian relief to the victims of tsunamis in Southeast Asia and earthquakes in Pakistan. The C-17 is the world's only tactical airlift aircraft with strategic capabilities that allow it to fly between continents and land on short, austere runways.

There are currently 211 C-17s in service worldwide, including 19 with international customers. The U.S. Air Force, including active Guard and Reserve units, has 192. International customers include the United Kingdom, Qatar, the Canadian Forces, the Royal Australian Air Force, and the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability consortium of NATO and Partnership for Peace nations.

A unit of The Boeing Company, Boeing Integrated Defense Systemsis one of the world's largest space and defense businesses specializing in innovative and capabilities-driven customer solutions, and the world's largest and most versatile manufacturer of military aircraft. Headquartered in St. Louis, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is a $32 billion business with 70,000 employees worldwide.

ATA Sues To Halt EU ETS

Three U.S. airlines and the Air Transport Association filed suit in a U.K. court Dec. 16 seeking to block implementation of Europe's greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme (ETS).

The suit was filed by ATA, Continental, American and United against the U.K. Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. It is the first legal action brought by U.S airlines in a European court to halt the inclusion of international aviation in the ETS. "We brought this action in order to preserve our members' rights to challenge the implementation of the EU ETS as applied to aviation," said ATA spokeswoman Victoria Day.

SIA A380 returns to Paris after power failure in galley

A Singapore Airlines (SIA) Airbus A380 had to turn back to Paris on 16 December after the power went out in its galley.

While the fault did not pose a safety issue, the Singapore-bound aircraft was turned back to Paris two hours into the flight because food could not be served on board, says an SIA spokesman.

Eleven A320 family aircraft delivered from Tianjin on schedule and on quality

16  December  2009

The Airbus A320 Family Final Assembly Line China (FALC) has achieved its 2009 target as the 11th A320 Family aircraft assembled by the FALC was delivered to Deer Air, an airline part of the HNA Group, on 16th December in Tianjin.

The first A320 assembled by the FALC was delivered to Sichuan Airlines via Dragon Aviation Leasing on 23rd June 2009. Since then, a total of six A320 and five A319 assembled by the FALC have been delivered and are now in operation with Sichuan Airlines, Deer Air, Shenzhen Airlines and China Eastern Airlines.

"We are very proud to have achieved our target in the first year of operation, on schedule and on quality. When we started operations in August 2008, we had two challenges: deliver Airbus quality from Tianjin and ensure a smooth ramp up of production. Both objectives were reached thanks to our Chinese partners' daily commitment as well as Airbus' active support at all levels. The success achieved in FALC is definitely a way forward for the continuous industrial cooperation between Airbus and China," said Laurence Barron, Airbus China President.

"This is a significant step for the development of FALC and is the result of the joint-efforts made by the Chinese and the European partners. FALC is an excellent example of the cooperation between the Chinese aviation industry and the rest of the world. FALC is a driving force for the development of the Aviation Industrial Base in Tianjin", said Zhao Haishan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Airbus (Tianjin) Final Assembly Company Ltd.

The A320 Family, which includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321, is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. Each aircraft features fly–by-wire controls and all share a unique cockpit and operational commonality across the range. More than 6,400 Airbus A320 Family aircraft have been sold to 221 customers worldwide, making it the world's best-selling commercial jetliner ever. With proven reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single-aisle aircraft. Uniquely, the A320 Family offers a containerized cargo system, which is compatible with the world wide standard wide-body system.

By the end of November 2009, 442 A320 Family aircraft are in operation with 12 operators in China. Chinese airlines have ordered close to 600 A320 Family aircraft in total.

About FALC

The Airbus A320 Family Final Assembly Line China (FALC) in Tianjin is the third single-aisle aircraft final assembly line location of Airbus worldwide, after Toulouse and Hamburg. It is also the first Airbus final assembly line outside Europe. The FALC is a joint venture between Airbus and a Chinese consortium comprising Tianjin Free Trade Zone (TJFTZ) and China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC). Airbus and the Chinese Consortium respectively hold 51 per cent and 49 per cent of the shares of the joint venture. FALC started work in August 2008. Eleven A319 and A320 aircraft are scheduled for delivery in Tianjin in 2009 and the FALC production rate will be ramped up to four aircraft per month by the end of 2011.
